The First Years

Condado Vanderbilt’s history can be traced back to its grand opening on October 16th, 1919. Frederick William Vanderbilt, scion of one of the wealthiest families in America – and among the most influential men in the country – had previously acquired oceanfront land on the site, and set out to build the finest destination in the Caribbean.

Mr. Vanderbilt selected Warren & Wetmore – one of the foremost architectural firms of the time, having designed Grand Central Station and the Biltmore Hotel – to draw up blueprints for what he would go on to name “The Condado Vanderbilt Hotel.”

Upon opening its doors, the Vanderbilt quickly became the destination of choice for generations of heads of state, captains of industry and Hollywood royalty – creating a rarified atmosphere of sophistication, elegance and grace.

The hotel had its own dock and boats so that guests could explore the Condado Lagoon. Other amenities included tennis courts, a bowling alley, a barbershop and a beauty salon.

1920

1920s ~ 1930s

Among the most prominent visitors to Condado Vanderbilt during this period were Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt – who, among other high-profile politicians and socialites, were entertained by diversions such as live music, miniature golf, local carnivals and games of chance.

1940s ~ 1970s

With the popularity of air travel burgeoning, visitation to Puerto Rico climbed. In response, the hotel expanded, adding more rooms – while still maintaining its reputation as an exclusive destination for celebrities, entertainers and high-profile politicians.

1940

1980

1980s ~ 1990s

“The Trio” – Condado Beach Hotel, La Concha Hotel and the Convention Center – steadily came into being. Live entertainment – in the form of popular bands and other famous stage acts – continued to cement Condado’s reputation as the entertainment capital of the Caribbean. Among the stars: Julio Iglesias and Plácido Domingo. Meanwhile, headline-grabbing events – from high-profile weddings to ornate quinceañeros – routinely filled ballrooms to capacity.

2000

2000s ~ Today

After decades of providing the international community with unrivaled levels of premier Caribbean hospitality, Condado Vanderbilt then received a well-deserved restoration – which, through faithful and meticulous care, returned the hotel to its legendary grandeur.

And while this distinguished grandame has indeed undergone significant modernization, one thing hasn’t changed: our unwavering commitment to providing guests with the kind of exacting service and attentive care that – to this very day – are the hallmarks of every stay.

SAN JOSE

COSTA RICA

San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, is located on the Central Valley plateau at an altitude of 1170 meters above sea level. The population is about 760,000 inhabitants.

The city was founded in 1737 and was then called Villa Nueva – “New City”, and became the capital only a hundred years later – in 1823. In the 19th century, San Jose developed as a center for the production of coffee and by the middle of the 20th century had become the main industrial city of Costa Rica. In addition to agriculture, tourism plays an important role in the city’s economy. Food and flavor, leather and footwear, textile industries are developed in the capital.

San Jose is surrounded on all sides by volcanic chains. They majestically rise above the low (as a rule, no more than two or three floors) buildings of the city. Only in the central and business parts of the city can you find buildings higher than ten floors. On the outskirts there are many private houses and mansions surrounded by tropical greenery.

The streets in the city are straight, wide enough, they have a lot of greenery, represented by exotic plants of the tropics. There are no special historical sights. In the very center of the capital, next to the central square, there is the National Theater, the building of which is considered one of the most beautiful theater buildings in Latin America. Lots of good and comfortable hotels.

Museums of the capital are interesting. In the National Museum, you can see items of Indian life and art, including unique gold jewelry (their modern copies can be purchased in the jewelry stores of the capital), as well as learn the entire history of the settlement and development of the country. In the center of the city, underground, there is a museum of gold objects of the Indian period found on the territory of the country. Interesting museums of Costa Rican art and entomology

The University of Costa Rica is also located here. National Library and National Archives. Of the architectural monuments – the cathedral of the XVIII century.

The inhabitants of Costa Rica are very fond of music and almost everyone dances wonderfully, easily performing the most difficult steps of traditional Latin American dances. Therefore, there are many discos and dance clubs in the city, where not only traditional, but also well-known, world music sounds. Costa Ricans are a calm people, and you can go to night discos without fear for your life. There are always a lot of taxis that are always ready to take you anywhere in the city for a very reasonable fee.

San Jose International Airport is located just 15-20 minutes drive from the city.

    Climb milling improves paving quality

MCK Services Inc., which was commissioned to carry out the work, decided to use this method in order to obtain a high quality paving. In the down milling method developed by Wirtgen, the recycler milling drum rotates in the direction of travel of the machine, rather than in the case of up milling, where the drum rotates in the opposite direction. This provides precise control of the grain size of the processed material, especially in the case of very fragile, thin, old asphalt roads.

New load-bearing capacity for San Jose city streets

This was the condition of San Jose’s main street, Double-u-Campbell Avenue, in the heart of Silicon Valley. Here, a Wirtgen cold recycler accustomed to this type of work immediately cut the damaged asphalt concrete layer 10 cm thick to a width of 3.80 m, granulated the material and mixed it with pre-distributed cement (1%).

Two tanks fed water and hot bitumen to the recycler through hoses. With the help of compressed air, foamed bitumen was produced from them. The distribution ramps are controlled by microprocessors, which ensures that the added foamed bitumen is accurately fed into the mixing chamber (in this case 2.5%) for optimal processing of the granular material. Ejectors located on the rotor then transfer the mixture to the conveyor that the 3800 CR is equipped with.

At this time, traffic passes the Starbright Theater at the junction with Fulton Street, apparently undisturbed by the recycling facility as the roadway is being repaved in a single work pass with no trucks in and out. This simultaneously increases safety and significantly relieves traffic.

The Wirtgen 3800 CR is designed with maximum power in mind to ensure that repairs can be carried out quickly. The loading system also has a high feeding capacity. The height-adjustable rotary conveyor feeds the material at a rapid pace into the tracked material hopper, which deposits the finished mix in place in 10 cm layers and pre-compacts it. The HD+ 110 VVHF tandem roller and the HAMM GRW 280i pneumatic roller carry out the final compaction, ensuring a continuous and even surface structure.

    Cost-effective and environmentally friendly

After 100 miles of cold recycling on site in the shortest possible time, Bob Gerrigan, Manager at MCK Services, is pleased with the results: “With the Wirtgen 3800 CR, we were able to complete financial requirements of the City of San Jose.”

The final figures speak for themselves: 9 reductions in truck working hours alone600 hours (90%) significantly reduced CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, as well as the movement of construction equipment on streets with a daily traffic load of 12,000 to 35,000 vehicles. Thus, the city managed to save at least 1.
