ratio, considered the lowest for the Caribbean.

Cockfighting began in the island.

1772

On August 28, a hurricane strikes the island, accompanied by an earthquake.

1780

On June 13, a hurricane strikes the island.

1785

On August 24-29, a hurricane strikes the island.

1786

The first History of Puerto Rico was published by
Brother Iñigo Abbad y Lasierra. The book titled “Historia
Geográfica, Civil y Política de Puerto Rico
was published in
Madrid, constitutes a complete history of Puerto Rico from the time of its
discovery in 1493 until 1783.

1787

On May 2, an earthquake occurred with an approximate magnitude of 8
on the Richter scale.

Alexander Hamilton, then Secretary of the Treasury of the United States,
proposed the annexation to the United States of Cuba, Puerto Rico, the western
territories and the entire American Hemisphere.

1797

The French and Spanish declare war on England.
The British attempt to conquer the island,
an invasion by 7,000 British troops and 64 warships under

Hermitage San Juan

30 December 2013 – 10:12

Celia Marin

Built at the foot of the Montgó Natural Park According to the inscription we can find upon arrival at the hermitage, this was the place of Pare Pere meditation. The hermitage of San Juan was also the refuge in the XNUMXth century of a brotherhood of “negroes”, Christianized African slaves.

Architecture Chapel

Hermitage San Juan de Dénia is one of the most famous in the city and is part of 9 calls0013 “Hermitage of conquest” that during the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries they were built. It is a building in the Gothic style, consisting of a rectangular UNINAVE with a roof on two waters, supported by two Gothic arches.

But if anything particularly stands out for the architecture of this chapel is its porch, Palladian or serliana trail. It is a high quality portal carved in local sandstone and built around 1600 when Villa de Dénia received up to three visits from King Felipe III thanks to the interest of Francisco Gómez de Sandoval y Rojas, Duke of Lerma, V Marquis of Dénia and favorite of the King. nine0003

Feast of St. John

The Hermitage of San Juan is the meeting place for devotees and festivities during the week of San Juan from 20 to 24 June. During all these days pilgrimage, popular lunches and dinners and parties at night, not forgetting the liturgies of those days, the only ones when religious services are performed throughout the year.

Schedule and masses

Skete of San Juan remains closed to the public throughout the year except for a week on the feast of the saint, 20 24 in June. In 2013, the department of culture of Dénia organized tours of the chapel, coinciding with the celebration of onomastics, with the aim of bringing such a pictorial story about the place visited by the citizens. nine0003

Manual

Skit San Juan in the game of the same name, in the Montgó Natural Park. To reach it from Calle Diana, move towards Montgó along Camí de Sant Joan. Pass the carousel and go straight up the mountain until the alacancemos fork, in which we see the island with alagarrobo until reaching the Al Khalifa urbanization. Take the right turn which remains at Cami de Sant Joan until you reach a crossroads where we will see the first indication of the chapel to 350 meters.

We will take the road – uphill – called Camí Vell de l’Ermita, and after 100 meters we will take the road on the right, Camí Nou de l’Ermita. At the end of this road we will find ourselves on the esplanade of the hermitage with Montgó in front and the city of Dénia behind us.

In order to reach it there is no public transport, so preferably private vehicles or on foot, a pleasant walk through Montgó.

around

The Hermitage of San Juan, like the other hermitages of the city of Dénia, is located in the countryside, in the Natural Park of Montgo, in a residential area. We cannot find services such as restaurants or shops around, but the proximity to the city makes it possible to purchase these services if you need them. nine0003

Puerto Rico Exploring Small Modular Reactors

Advanced Nuclear Reactors Can Meet Puerto Rico’s Unique Energy Needs By Complementing Zero-Emission Renewable Electricity, Production Resistant To Extreme Natural Events – concluded a preliminary feasibility study conducted by the Puerto Rican-led nonprofit Nuclear Alternative Project (NAP) and funded by the US Department of Energy (DOE).

nine0218

The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the northeastern Caribbean. Puerto Rico currently generates 98% of its electricity from imported fossil fuels, and its power plants built in the late 1960s have outage rates 12 times higher than the US average. Over the next decade, the government of Puerto Rico is proposing a shift from a centralized system dependent on fossil fuels to a distributed system focused on clean energy. The country’s legislature passed a bill in 2018 calling for an investigation into the possibility of building nuclear power plants on the island, which has been hit hard by massive blackouts since Hurricane Maria in 2017. nine0003

NAP, founded in 2016 by Puerto Rican engineers to inform and promote the construction of small modular reactors (SMRs) and microreactors in Puerto Rico, has proposed a feasibility study to the US Department of Energy Nuclear Energy Administration to assess the economic situation, safety and security, and social impact use of microreactors and SMRs on the island. The study began in October last year with approval from the Idaho National Laboratory. The results of this feasibility study were published by NAP yesterday. nine0003

The Puerto Rico Electricity Authority’s (PREPA) Integrated Resource Plan calls for Puerto Rico to have about 3,000 MW of new solar, energy storage, and natural gas capacity by 2025. by 2025 at 60% renewable energy by 2040 and 100% renewable energy by 2050.

“Only nuclear reactors can supplement the intermittency of renewables with zero emission power generation at base load,” the feasibility study states. The report noted that small nuclear reactors could successfully integrate with renewable energy and the existing transmission and distribution network, as well as with the decentralized system envisaged for the island. nine0003

As noted in the study, the supply of electricity from SMRs and microreactors can be cost-effective compared to the production of natural gas from mobile gas plants and combined cycle gas turbines proposed by PREPA as a replacement for electricity sources on the island. The report proposes a series of legislative amendments to maximize the competitiveness of power generation with SMRs and microreactors in Puerto Rico. The study showed that the design and layout of modern reactors allows this technology to withstand severe natural events such as hurricanes and earthquakes. nine0003

The introduction of modern reactors will not lead to long-term storage of nuclear waste in Puerto Rico, the study also says. As with all U.S. nuclear power plants, it is expected that low-level waste from the Puerto Rico nuclear power plant will be sent to a U.S. licensed low-level waste disposal facility, and high-level spent fuel will be safely stored at the site, which will then be sent to storage. on the US mainland. nine0003

“Advanced nuclear reactors provide a combination of lower costs, zero-emissions electricity at base load, and minimal dependency on imported fuel, which can lead to the high degree of energy security and reliability so essential to the development of a strong manufacturing and industrial sector in Puerto Rico “A strong local manufacturing industry means job creation, economic growth, additional exports, as well as global competition and innovative expansion,” the report says. nine0003

The study revealed a high public interest in the siting of nuclear reactors in Puerto Rico. More than 3,000 residents were surveyed across the island, with 94% saying they would all be interested in continuing to explore the possibility of using nuclear power for the island. However, it states that there is a public misconception that nuclear power is banned in Puerto Rico.

“This concept is based on the Government Decree at the beginning of 1990s, which stated that nuclear power was not a viable alternative source of energy at the time, not that nuclear power plants were banned,” the study says, “Following this order, no further statements were made by the executive authorities on the viability of nuclear energy, and none of the existing laws allowing nuclear power on the island have been changed to ban nuclear power here on the island.”

The report concludes by saying that

“the challenges identified for deploying modern reactors in Puerto Rico are related to policy, design and public dialogue.
