The route we offer you in this case approaches one of the natural emblematic places of the Community of Madrid: the San Juan Laguna Fauna refuge, protected since 1991. We are talking about approximately 47 hectares of wetlands, of which 4 hectares correspond to the water layer and the rest are marshy vegetation that surrounds and protects the water. This combination of water and vegetation offers a suitable refuge for the bird species characteristic of these swampy ecosystems.

In the zone of influence of the river Tahunya, at the base of the limestone hills characteristic of the left bank of the river, lies Laguna; the hills themselves are also present in this route, which picks up several ecosystems: swampy area, limestone hills and cultivated fields. This is a long route, its length is approximately 19 and a half kilometers. You must drive up to Villaconejos where this route starts.

It is recommended to avoid following this route on hot days as there is no shade on the route. It is also advisable not to forget to bring water and binoculars for birdwatching. The route starts and ends in Villaconejos, a locality famous for its melons.

    Slope Section

The route starts at the Main Square. To the left of the city hall building, we exit along Santa Ana street, which goes towards the hermitage of the same name, after crossing with other streets. We leave the skete on the left side and exit the city along the road that is right in front of us and deepens between the melon plantations. This well-groomed road brings us to a fork on the left, just before the village house, where we have to turn and continue on our way. This new uphill road is in poor condition and quite rocky in some sections. It is called the “Valdesarza” road, which extends towards the hills and the entire surrounding area consists of descents and ascents characteristic of this area. But finally the ascent ends and the road winds around a series of bends, adapting to the hilly terrain, among olive groves and thickets of esparto (a kind of feather grass).

The swallows are playing with the wind and seem to want to follow us. We will continue our path, which is already descending, never deviating from the main road, along which we will come to a crossroads between cereal plantations.

    San Juan Lagoon Section

At this junction we must continue straight ahead on a road that rises slightly between exposed gypsum deposits in the soil. After a few meters we leave this road and continue to climb until we see the ruins of “Cubilla”, a former farm that gave its name to the urbanization, into which we will immediately go deeper, turning left along the fence of the first estate. Now we start a long descent, quite steep. Approaching the intersection of roads, we take the left to continue downhill, at the next intersection we turn right and at the last intersection, next to the transformer, right again. Finally, we exit the urbanization and turn left. The trail we are now following is called “Vereda de la Blanca”, it is used for transhumance and is extended for many kilometers, connecting the wetlands between the Tahunha river bed with the gypsum rock hills that line the valley.

After a few meters, the San Juan Lagoon sign shows us the way forward. We pass by the observation point of the Fauna Refuge, where there is an explanatory panel containing information about the main characteristics of this natural enclave, then we will see the bird observatory and the Lagoon weir, if you do not make noise, you can observe a large variety of birds inhabiting the lagoon, so it is especially important to have the binoculars. Special panels will help us to identify the breeds of birds depending on their appearance, as well as the time of year.

We leave the observatory and continue along the road between the plantings of the fertile valley of the river Tahunya, which is guessed due to the coastal forest, which indicates the existence of a river on the right. On our way we will meet numerous birds: swallows, city swallows (lat. delichon urbicum) and golden bee-eaters (lat. merops apiaster). The last of them arrange their nests in the cliffs on the left side. Also, we can sometimes see the Egyptian heron and marsh harrier. Our route comes to an end at the highway to Titulcia, where the bridge route descends (“la ruta de los puentes”), but our trekking turns 360 degrees to go deeper into the hills that open up on the left side.

    Site of the Huntsman’s House

We start the road up the hills along a path that can be seen among the abundant characteristic vegetation on the left side. Having gained a little height, the path becomes wider and we pass in front of the rosemary caves. You can see how the road goes along the slope of the hill, gradually rising between the abundant thickets of esparto (a kind of feather grass).

Coming to the end of the hollow, we come to another slope, where the holm oak begins to grow abundantly, forming thorny, almost impenetrable thickets; this tree belongs to the genus “quércus”, which is evident from its leaves and the presence of acorns. The road is difficult due to the climbs that need to be overcome in order to get to the House of the Jaeger, an old dilapidated domino that rules over all the surrounding nature. Arriving at this place, we continue our journey, turning left, along the path going down, as the other existing path is crowned with a house.

    Sanatorium Villacabras

We descend to the next path, on which we turn right towards the farmhouse opposite, and having approached it, we continue straight ahead, leaving it on the right side; after a short but hard climb, we arrive at the highest point of our route at 650 meters high; from there the path begins to gradually descend among fields of cereals, olive groves and large vineyards, we must follow without deviating from the route in order to come out to another road passing just under the power line; here we turn to the left first and after continuing straight ahead, we must come to the next crossroads, where, if desired, we can approach the nearest source of Villacabras, which at one time gave rise to the creation of a spa, thanks to its healing qualities. In order to approach it, we must turn left at the said intersection towards the ruins and trees that are visible in the distance, and continue along the road, which after a few meters again deviates to the left, in order to finally come to a semi-hidden spring in the shade of a fig tree. A little lower there are caves filled with crystal water, which supplied the resort located above and of which only the foundation remains now. All this is surrounded by abundant swampy vegetation, which uses the constant presence of water for its development.

We return along the same road and follow the intersection without deviating. If we have not deviated from the route to approach the source, the turn at the intersection should be to the right. In any case, the road will lead us to Villaconejos; Before reaching the village, we will pass by the Cave of the Monks, where a sign on a tablet indicates that this cave was cut down more than two centuries ago.

We enter the village under the telephone company tower along Baiona street and continue straight on to Piazza de la Alegria, from here you can already see the church towers, where we head along the street with the same name; this street, leaving the church behind, flows into the Main Square, where we will end our route.
