The San Juan submarine must be found at any cost / Columnist / Nezavisimaya Gazeta

The death of any submarine in any society is perceived with a special tragedy

Photo site wikipedia.org

Specialists of the Russian Navy aboard the Islas Malvinas once again set out to search for the Argentine submarine San Juan. This was reported by the newspaper Kommersant with reference to the press service of the Argentine Navy. According to the publication, Russian sailors, together with the Panther Plus submersible and translators, headed from the naval base in the city of Ushuaia to the search area.

The Argentine Navy corvette Spiro and the Russian oceanographic vessel Yantar, which arrived in the area in early December last year, are currently on site. The submarine of the Argentine Navy “San Juan” stopped communicating on November 15 last year when moving from the Ushuaia naval base to Mar del Plata. During the last communication session, the crew reported problems with the batteries. It was about the ingress of sea water, a short circuit and fire. On December 1, the Argentine Navy announced the termination of the operation to rescue the crew of the San Juan, but the search for the submarine continues.

The other day there was information that the former analyst of the US Naval Intelligence Directorate , Bruce Rule , presented a report in which he said that the submarine, which disappeared almost two months ago, was completely destroyed in 0.4 seconds (http: //www. ng.ru/news/604897.html). He notes that these figures are two times less than the minimum required time in order to comprehend the events. That is, it can be assumed that the sailors died instantly and did not experience suffering. It is noteworthy that the US Naval Intelligence Directorate immediately stated that the agency had nothing to do with the report on the sinking of the San Juan, since Bruce Rule allegedly retired from service several years ago. True, this does not exclude the validity of his conclusions. Still, they were not based on intelligence data, but on data from the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization.

If this is true, the Argentine sailors were “lucky” (if, alas, one can speak of luck in this case). On the Russian nuclear-powered ship Kursk, which sank in 2000, everything was much more complicated. After the explosion in the torpedo compartment, the sailors even managed to turn off the reactor, that is, they had much more time to “comprehend the tragedy”. They had, according to investigators, 135 seconds of hell. According to the expert, the temperature of the explosion reached 8 thousand degrees Celsius. The metal turned into steam. But the sailors survivedth compartment, which lasted at least another 6-7 hours!

The former commander of the Baltic Fleet Admiral Vladimir Valuev believes that the Argentine submarine “San Juan” could not disappear without a trace even as a result of a powerful explosion. At the same time, the admiral, apparently, believes that the cause of the tragedy was the explosion of torpedoes on board. But, we note, the Argentine Navy categorically states that there was no ammunition on board the submarine. Valuev is convinced that Russian specialists need to continue searching so that the Argentine authorities can bury the remains of the submariners. The admiral is sure that the submarine could not have disappeared without leaving traces – the hull could not have been shattered into small pieces. He noted that usually the place of the explosion with such TNT equivalent is the torpedo compartment.

Now there is no point in discussing what caused the tragedy. The main thing is to find the boat (or what is left of it). When the Kursk sank, Russian President Vladimir Putin made, presumably, the difficult decision of entrusting the recovery of the boat to a Western company. And spending over a hundred million dollars on it. But it was the right decision. The death of any submarine in any society is perceived with particular tragedy. And the Argentine authorities must do everything to find “San Juan”. And Russia – to do everything to help the Argentines in this sad story. Because the memory of the Kursk remains in our hearts.

San Juan Diesel Submarine

Submarine “San Juan” stopped communicating on November 15 last year at the passage from the naval base of Ushuaia to Mar del Plata. There were 44 people on board the vessel, including the only female submariner in the Argentine Navy Lieutenant Eliana Maria Krawczyk – an Argentine of Polish origin, the first female submariner in the history of Latin America . In her youth, she had nothing to do with the sea, so it was impossible to assume that she would ever set foot on board a submarine. Krawczyk grew up in the small village of Obera in northeastern Argentina and saw the ocean for the first time only at the age of 21. None of her family served in the Navy.
