Experts modeled a possible scenario for the sinking of the submarine “San Juan”

The Argentine Ministry of Defense restored the likely scenario for the sinking of the submarine “San Juan”. According to experts, the submarine was in distress for several hours: a fire broke out on board the day before the sinking, but the crew coped with the threat. After surfacing and repairs, the San Juan sank again, but water got on the batteries, causing a new fire to break out, which the crew members could no longer extinguish.

The Argentine Ministry of Defense has restored a possible scenario for the sinking of the San Juan diesel-electric submarine, the Nacion online publication reports, citing experts from the military department.

According to one version, the submarine was in distress for several hours. At first, a fire could have broken out on board, which the crew dealt with. For repairs, the San Juan had to surface.

After that, the submarine submerged to follow to the destination base. However, already under water, a new fire could break out on board due to the fact that water could get on the batteries. This led to a loss of control, after which the San Juan began to rapidly sink to the bottom.

              View photo

At a critical depth, the submarine’s hull could have been crushed by the water column, the article says.

Water may have entered the submarine through a snorkel, an air intake device that powers the submarine’s internal combustion engine while submerged. This point of view was expressed by a military analyst, captain of the 1st rank of the reserve Vasily Dandykin in a conversation with FAN .

“If [water] got on the batteries, there could be a short circuit, a fire, and then an explosion. And if this is so, then the crew had little chance of surviving, two percent out of a hundred,

              , the caperang believes.

The San Juan submarine, built in the early 1980s in Germany, stopped communicating on November 15, 2017. The submarine of the Argentine Navy with 44 crew members went to sea from the Ushuaia base, located southwest of the Strait of Magellan on the island of Tierra del Fuego. After that, the San Juan headed for the home port of Mar del Plata. Last contact with the ship was made in the San Jorge Bay area, between Rio Gallegos and Puerto Desido, 431 km from the coast.

The San Juan was completely destroyed by the explosion within 40 milliseconds. This is reported in the report of the US Naval Intelligence Agency. The explosion, with a power of approximately six tons of TNT, occurred at a depth of 400 m.

It is worth adding that the maximum depth to which the San Juan dived before the disaster was 300 m.

“San Juan” rests on the bottom of the Atlantic at a depth of 907 m. According to the Minister of Defense of the country Oscar Aguada, it is impossible to raise the submarine from the bottom of the sea “due to the lack of technical and financial means” for such an operation. On November 18, Argentine President Mauricio Macri declared three days of mourning for the crew of the San Juan submarine. His words conveys HSN .

“Only lifting, detailed examination and examination can give an answer about the reasons for the death of the boat. And the lifting of any object from the ground is a completely unique operation.
