Puerto Rico Island – a rich port in the Caribbean

View of the islands

Puerto Rico is a fabulous island, the northern coast of which is washed by the Atlantic Ocean, and the southern coast by the Caribbean Sea. Discovered by Spanish sailors, today it is under the control of the United States, in the status of “unincorporated territory”, which allows the state to have its own constitution and legislation. The indigenous population of the island are Indians, but today Spanish, African, American and Indian cultures are mixed here, which gives the country a special, unique flavor. Ancient history is closely intertwined with a modern and developed tourist infrastructure – this makes Puerto Rico very popular with travelers from various countries, including Russia. However, it is worth remembering that in order to soak up the sun in Puerto Rico, our compatriots need an American visa.

General

Puerto Rico is a country that includes, in addition to the main island of the same name, several small islands and reefs. Most of the population communicates in Spanish, but some also speak English.

Puerto Rico has a mild tropical climate all year round. Temperature fluctuations between the northern and southern parts of the island are very small, and on average the air warms up to +28⁰C. In the center of the island are massifs of mountain ranges, which is why the weather in this area of Puerto Rico is always a little cooler. From June to November, there is a large amount of precipitation, and strong hurricanes fall, with wind gusts up to 150 km / h. In addition, the island is periodically subjected to tangible earthquakes.
nine0003

Despite these natural disasters, Puerto Rico continues to be one of the most desirable holiday destinations for most tourists. So that the weather does not spoil your vacation, it is best to buy tours to Puerto Rico from November to May.

Nature

Tropical island with pristine nature, hot and humid climate, creates ideal conditions for a huge number of relict plants. About 200 species of evergreen trees, more than 100 species of various ferns and several dozen species of flowers grow here, including the orchid, which is popular in these places. The richest variety of flora and fauna is represented in the El Yunque National Forest, which has the status of a biosphere reserve. The small Koki frogs that live on its territory are the unspoken symbol of the country. These small but very loud amphibians got their name from the sounds they make, the volume of which reaches 100 decibels.
nine0003

The main property of the island’s nature is the Rio Camai cave park, which consists of many karst caves located in the north-east of the country, some of which are up to 16 kilometers deep. Speleologists consider the limestone formations in these caves to be unique and the best in the world. Nearby flows Kamai – one of the largest underground rivers in the world. Brave tourists can dive into sinkholes and get through them into the underground sections of the Kamai River, and from there make rafting.
nine0003

Puerto Rico’s natural attraction is its three bioluminescent bays. Mosquito Bay has the brightest glow, it is he who is the most popular among tourists. And this amazing effect is observed due to the huge number of single-celled organisms of dinoflagellates, which begin to glow in a restless state.
Fort San Felipe el Moro

Points of interest

In addition to the pristine exotic nature, there are many architectural monuments on the island. It is best to start your acquaintance with the history of Puerto Rico from its capital and the oldest city in the country – San Juan, founded in 1521. The central streets are paved with special blue tiles brought by Spanish merchant ships. The city has about 400 well-preserved buildings of the XVI-XVII centuries, representing the Spanish colonial architecture. There are also several squares here: the youth square of San Jose, the Armory square with statues of the seasons, the Fifth Century Square – dedicated to Christopher Columbus, the La Rogative square with a sculpture, in memory of the religious procession of women in 1797 year. From the northern side along the entire old city stretch the ancient stone walls of the fortress, which protected the city in ancient times from attacks from the sea. Nearby is a historical and national value – a large six-level fort of San Felipe el Moro, whose height is 42 m, and its walls are more than 5 meters thick. It is considered the oldest fortress in the Caribbean – the building dates back to the 16th century. In 1983, it was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Rio Cave Park – Kamai

On the other side of the city there is another, not so large-scale, fortress – San Cristobal. Here everyone can walk through damp underground labyrinths and tunnels, inspect prison cells and ditches. And from the walls of the bastion offers a magnificent view of the city.

Connoisseurs of architectural monuments should also visit the Church of St. Joseph, built in 1523, the Tapia Theater founded in 1823, the historical museum located in the building of the former municipal prison of La Princesa, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist of the 16th century, the Dominican convent.
nine0003

Another attraction in Puerto Rico is Pigeon Park or “Parque de La Palomas”, the perfect place to take stunningly beautiful photos. Its peculiarity is that it is located much higher than the walls of the city and from here you can admire the beautiful panorama of the surroundings and picturesque views of the harbor.

A few kilometers from San Juan is the world’s largest plant for the production of Bacardi rum. Here you will be offered to look at the process of making this elite drink, conduct a tasting and buy your favorite drink.
Bioluminescent bays

Entertainment

Of course, the first things Caribbean Islands are associated with are snow-white beaches, gentle warm sea and lots and lots of sun. A lot of tourists come to the luxurious beaches of Puerto Rico, with the finest sand and the purest turquoise sea water. One of the most beautiful is Flamenco Beach, located on the coral island of Culebrita, it creates the feeling of a real tropical paradise. On the same island there is Turtle Beach, where a large number of sea turtles sail.
nine0003

The islands are perfect for surfers. In the northwest of Puerto Rico is a specialized surfing center. In the vicinity of San Juan, there are both relatively quiet bays with a wave height of about 5 meters – they can be recommended for beginners, and places where professionals can compete in the ability to catch a wave. The maximum height of some waves here reaches 15 meters.
View of the islands

Puerto Rico is a real paradise for diving fans, its coastal waters are considered to be among the cleanest and most beautiful in the world.
nine0003

The country hosts a huge number of various festivals and celebrations: the St. Sebastian Street Festival held in January, the Casals Music Festival in July, the incredibly bright Ponce Carnival in February, the annual day of the city’s guardian angel – a religious festival with a combination of Indian, Spanish and African traditions . On Christmas and New Year’s Eve, the capital of the state hosts large street concerts and amazing folklore performances.
