    • Access Advisory:

    Obtaining Copies

If an image is displaying, you can download it yourself. (Some images display only as thumbnails outside
the Library of Congress because of rights considerations, but you have access to larger size images on
    site.)

Alternatively, you can purchase copies of various types through
    Library of Congress Duplication Services.

    1. If a digital image is displaying: The qualities of the digital image partially
depend on whether it was made from the original or an intermediate such as a copy negative or
transparency. If the Reproduction Number field above includes a reproduction number that starts
with LC-DIG…, then there is a digital image that was made directly from the original
and is of sufficient resolution for most publication purposes.
    2. If there is information listed in the Reproduction Number field above:
You can use the reproduction number to purchase a copy from Duplication Services. It will be
made from the source listed in the parentheses after the number.

If only black-and-white (“b&w”) sources are listed and you desire a copy showing
color or tint (assuming the original has any), you can generally purchase a quality copy of
the original in color by citing the Call Number listed above and including the catalog
record (“About This Item”) with your request.

    3. If there is no information listed in the Reproduction Number field above:
You can generally purchase a quality copy through Duplication Services. Cite the Call Number
listed above and include the catalog record (“About This Item”) with your request.

Price lists, contact information, and order forms are available on the
    Duplication Services Web site.

    Access to Originals

Please use the following steps to determine whether you need to fill out a call slip in the Prints
and Photographs Reading Room to view the original item(s). In some cases, a surrogate (substitute image) is
available, often in the form of a digital image, a copy print, or microfilm.

    1. Is the item digitized? (A thumbnail (small) image will be visible on the left.)

      • Yes, the item is digitized.
Please use the digital image in preference to requesting the original. All images can be
viewed at a large size when you are in any reading room at the Library of Congress. In some
cases, only thumbnail (small) images are available when you are outside the Library of
Congress because the item is rights restricted or has not been evaluated for rights
        restrictions.

As a preservation measure, we generally do not serve an original item when a digital image
is available. If you have a compelling reason to see the original, consult with a reference
librarian. (Sometimes, the original is simply too fragile to serve. For example, glass and
film photographic negatives are particularly subject to damage. They are also easier to see
online where they are presented as positive images.)
      • No, the item is not digitized. Please go to #2.
    2. Do the Access Advisory or Call Number fields above indicate that a non-digital surrogate exists,
such as microfilm or copy prints?

      • Yes, another surrogate exists. Reference staff can direct you to this
        surrogate.
      • No, another surrogate does not exist. Please go to #3.
    3. If you do not see a thumbnail image or a reference to another surrogate, please fill out a call slip in
the Prints and Photographs Reading Room. In many cases, the originals can be served in a few minutes.
Other materials require appointments for later the same day or in the future. Reference staff can
advise you in both how to fill out a call slip and when the item can be served.

To contact Reference staff in the Prints and Photographs Reading Room, please use our
Ask A Librarian service or call the reading room between 8:30 and
    5:00 at 202-707-6394, and Press 3.

    San Sebastian

As the reader may have noticed from recent posts, I went on vacation and drove around Europe for a bit. Mainly in Spain, and more precisely, in the Basque Country. Most of the time I was in San Sebastian. In short, I liked it more than Barcelona.

    How it is

The Basques themselves say that the city is touristy and expensive. You can still somehow agree with the second one (although we’ll talk about prices later), but hardly with the first one. There are much fewer tourists on the streets than in Barcelona. What’s more, you don’t really feel them. Since everyone knows about Barcelona, everyone goes there, including a large number of people from Asian countries: Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, etc. There are almost none in San Sebastian. Therefore, the sensations are calmer, no one runs anywhere, no one shouts, no one clicks the camera left and right. nine0003

In addition, the proximity of the sea is felt much stronger in the city than in Barca. You can even say that the sea sets the mood and the weather, because in the month that I was there, the weather forecast could never accurately predict whether it would rain or not. And this seems to have its own charm.

    What to see

Unlike hot Barcelona, in San Sebastian you can and should walk. The city is not very big, but very beautiful. There are several small mountains nearby, which you can climb to look at everything from a height, or just read a book there, since the infrastructure allows (there are a lot of benches on Mount Urgul). Or even ride a roller coaster on the edge of Mount Igueldo. If the mountains do not please you, then you can swim in the sea and sunbathe on La Concha. nine0003

But since I’m not a big fan of “walking” and “sunbathing”, I advise you to go to Eureka. This is an insanely cool science museum where you can touch and poke every exhibit. And almost all of them are about physics: mechanics, electrodynamics, thermodynamics, optics, etc. I was delighted to go around everything (except anatomy, where is too realistic) and regretted that I arrived only two hours before closing. If you, like me, had almost no demonstration experiments in physics at school and university, intellectual euphoria and lamentations “And this? And this? And what does it do? Nothing!” you are provided. Plus, every 15-20 minutes there are interactive stories on various topics (though mostly in Spanish). nine0003

The second place worth visiting is Miramar Palace. The palace itself is not particularly interesting, but the park near it is very steep.

And thirdly, you need to take a boat ride around Santa Clara Island. The waves in the bay are big, so the feeling is unforgettable 🙂

    How to survive

Despite the fact that it is hot in the city in summer, a pleasant breeze blows from the close sea, so there is almost no unbearable heat. But even in this case, if you do not walk on the ocean shore, you can find shade almost everywhere, parks, benches, a bunch of drinking fountains and all that. You can almost always move on foot, but if you suddenly get tired, a bus ticket costs 1.7 € at the time of writing. nine0003

They also sell delicious ice cream on every corner (≈2€), so don’t miss your chance.

    How much is

As I said at the beginning, the Basques think that the city is expensive. However, if you look at food, clothes and travel, it is cheaper than Barcelona. In general, prices in supermarkets are almost the same as in Moscow. Sometimes more expensive, sometimes cheaper. I, as someone who does not eat meat, could not but be pleased with the low prices for fish and excellent quality seafood.

Prices for clothes are about 20-30% lower than for exactly the same goods in the same chains with us. Therefore, if it’s normal for you to dress in stores like: Zara, Bershka, Calzedonia, etc., then most likely it makes sense to take less clothes with you and just buy them here. nine0003

If you live in a hotel, do not cook on your own and walk somewhere all day long, then most likely the average check per person per day is about the same as in Barça — 50€. Only there more money is spent on seeing the sights, and here on food in bars and restaurants, because they are everywhere and everything is very tasty.

Actually, I have a list of food prices somewhere (and a bunch of photos) that I collected to show someone. If you suddenly need, knock on my Twitter, I will share somehow. nine0038

    What else

As a person who has hardly been to Europe, I liked a lot of different things in San Sebastian. Most of all this will be in the following notes (I will write separately about what I liked in Spain), but there are things that I saw only here.

For example, it is interesting how two languages coexist: Basque and Spanish. The first generally dying language, and if it is not supported and taught, then Spanish will finally finish it off and everyone will use only it. Nevertheless, no one imposes it by force (although it helps to move up the career ladder), and all the inscriptions are duplicated in Spanish. Even the signs on the houses: on one corner in Basque, on the other in Spanish. nine0003

Or the Basque love to hide everything underground. Indeed: there are parking lots, shops, trash cans and even a bus station. It’s cool because the city stays clean and easy to walk around.

But perhaps what struck me the most was the fact that a pedestrian road can be more important than an automobile one. It seems that for a person from Russia this is nonsense, and the previous sentence does not make any sense at all. How is that? Well, for example, like this:

Surprisingly, it happens. In general, there are a lot of pedestrian streets, which is nice. Barcelona also has this, but, unfortunately, there are still cars rolling on both sides of the street, even on the Rambla. In San Sebastian, more often like this:

On the left, a building is being restored, if anything.

In general, the city leaves a very pleasant impression, and you want to return to it, if only to take a quiet walk again and eat ice cream during the day, and sit in some bar in the evening.

Just in case, I will mention that in some cinemas films are shown in the original with subtitles in Spanish. Focus on the acronym V.O.S.E (Version Original Subtitulada en Español) . I did not immediately figure out what was what, so maybe this will be important information for you too 🙂

By the way, I went to San Sebastian from Barcelona by bus (it was more convenient, ≈32€), and flew home from neighboring Bilbao. Now I was surprised to learn that the city has an airport, however, apparently only for domestic flights (that is, you can fly to it from Madrid, for example). However, just in case, check how much it costs to fly and rent a hotel for the weekend:
