    It was my first time visit this shopping center. Overall it is safe and can walk around without any problem. There are security there so you feel a bit more safe. There a few shop hear and a mall which we like a little better because it got AC in and you can explore. Next door to the mall is Jumbo which is a grocery place that you can get really good local fruits that is really fresh. It totally worth the visit. It cost us only $10 for taxi driver to go there and $10 back. We ask our taxi driver to wait for us and we pay him after he drop us off at the hotel. Gratuity is a must to get great customer service so bring many one dollar bills, it does make a huge difference.

    It’s not some crazy shopping mall like in Dubai, but it has everything you need and a some restraunts and a movie theater. Outside is very well maintained, the parking lot is clean and lots of parking spaces.

    Great dental office. Just remember to have your vaccination card with you and I’d or passport to go into the grocery store. Uber is cheap there. Don’t us the taxi because it’s like twice the price specially from the airport

    Very neat place. Vendors are vultures on tourists, but they’re just trying to make a living. Wasn’t the easiest place to get to via shuttle, but it’s a cool place to go if you’re trying to ease into leaving the resort.

    Really nice shopping mall, they have a great variety of everything. But the part that we most enjoyed was outside of the mall there is like little shops selling souvenirs and other interesting stuff.

    Not at all an inviting experience, especially when compared to the Downtown Mall next door. Unkempt storefronts and not much to see.

Which shopping centers in Punta Cana 🌴 are suitable for shopping

Punta Cana is known all over the world for its picturesque sandy beaches, spa centers, warm sea water. There are many interesting historical and cultural sites on the territory of the Dominican Republic, each of which deserves to be included in an individual route of acquaintance with the country.

The memories that travelers bring back from their Dominican vacation will fade away, but small gifts and souvenirs will be a great reminder of the event.

All excursions from Tripster

When planning a vacation, many tourists think in advance about what is best to take from the Dominican Republic (most of the guests want to purchase quality products at minimal prices). Consider shopping and malls in Punta Cana on ToursDominicana.

Want to go shopping in Punta Cana? Where is the best place to go?

Among large shopping centers, Palma Real Shopping Village is of interest. On the territory of the shopping complex there are both branded departments and shops with quite democratic “price tags”.

  • Duty Free Zone
  • Total
  • Currency

    Currency

    The Dominican Republic uses the Peso as the national currency.

    The exchange is carried out in all financial institutions. For purchases in shopping centers, markets, entertainment centers, you can pay in dollars, and sellers will give change in pesos. Money can be taken with you as small souvenirs.

    Tips

    Tips

    Dominican resorts are recognized as one of the best in the world. That is why they set the rules for the implementation of international trade, operating throughout the modern civilized world:

    1. The number of trading establishments is growing exponentially when approaching tourist areas.
    2. Shops with national goods are found throughout Punta Cana.
    3. You can buy the thing you like in dollars, but the exchange rate is most often unprofitable. Before shopping, we recommend that you take care of exchanging dollars for national currencies (pesos).
    4. Don’t forget to bargain with Dominican vendors. The initial cost of the goods, as a rule, is significantly overestimated. Local residents love thorough trading, they treat guests who know how to bargain with respect.
    5. We advise you to purchase jewelry in large shopping centers. In local markets, the quality of “gold” and “silver” jewelry is a big question mark. Instead of the desired earrings made of precious metal with precious stones, you can become the owner of cheap jewelry.

    Shopping options

    Shopping options

    Let’s move on to the analysis of Dominican goods that can be purchased while traveling in Punta Cana:

    • doll without a face;
    • decorations;
    • amber;
    • paintings;
    • coconut decor;
    • shark teeth;
    • coffee;
    • seafood delicacies;
    • cosmetics.

    Doll without a face

    Doll without a face

    In Dominican culture, which is considered a combination of the traditions of the Indian island peoples with Spanish customs, a clay doll without pronounced facial features is used.

    What is special about the Dominican doll?

    In the Dominican national culture, the Lime doll is considered a symbol of good luck and wealth.

    The Lime doll is recognized as one of the most popular souvenirs among the guests of the Dominican resort of Punta Cana. She is dressed in national dresses, is the personification of the Dominican way of life. Among the proposed models:

    • Lime with a basket on the lair;
    • coffee bean grinder;
    • with flower pot.

    There are different versions regarding the origin of these national symbols. For example, there is an opinion that dolls are a symbol of local tribes destroyed by the Spanish colonizers.

    The cost of souvenir dolls starts from a few dollars (the following parameters affect the price: size, plot complexity).

    Jewelery

    Jewelery

    Larimar is a semi-precious stone used to make jewelry in the Dominican Republic. Larimar has greenish and bluish hues (it was discovered only in the second half of the last century on the island of Haiti).

    In addition to the Dominican Republic, one more larimar deposit has been discovered in Italy.

    Earrings, rings, brooches made of delicate blue gemstone, framed in gold or silver, will be a wonderful reminder of a vacation in the Dominican Republic.

    Original handicrafts can be bought from five dollars. It is necessary to keep the receipt after the purchase, as the country has established limits on the export of semi-precious stones from the country.

    Blue stone, like turquoise, gradually loses its rich color due to ultraviolet rays. To avoid such a nuisance, it is necessary to protect the product from sunlight.

    Amber

    Amber

    Fossil resin, which was found in the east of the country, is considered the highest quality in the Caribbean region (Dominican amber is second only to its Kaliningrad counterpart in popularity).

    The stones are yellowish, reddish, bluish in color.

    The cost of a product with such stones starts from one hundred US dollars.

    Souvenirs made from Dominican amber bring good luck to their owner.

    Paintings

    Paintings

    Local artists choose several directions for their creativity:

    • palm trees;
    • sun;
    • coast;
    • sea surface.

    The works differ in quality, but due to the low price ($5-10) guests of Punta Cana buy them with pleasure.

    Coconut decor

    Coconut decor

    Products made from natural coke are a great idea for a budget and unusual souvenir. In the Caribbean, craftsmen are engaged in decorative carving of coconut shells. They create unusual products:

    • earrings;
    • bracelets;
    • pendants;
    • rings.

    Products have a sophisticated look, and even travelers with modest material income can buy them.

    Shark teeth

    Shark teeth

    Dominicans are convinced that an amulet made from the tooth of a marine predator has positive energy. Such an unusual decoration costs only a couple of dollars, so it is quite possible to consider the product as a gift to colleagues at work.

    Coffee

    Coffee

    Coffee is one of the main crops in the Dominican Republic. The invigorating drink created in Punta Cana has a characteristic bitter aftertaste.

    The price of such a product (for 1 kg) is 5-6 dollars.

    Among the best varieties, we note “Indumban” and “Santo Domingo”.

    Please note that only 500 grams of coffee can be exported from the country (per 1 tourist).

    Sea delicacies

    Sea delicacies

    As for any seaside resort, shells are popular in Punta Cana. At a low price, they will be a great souvenir and a reminder of the days spent in the Dominican Republic (you can buy them or just collect them on the coast).

    There are bans on export from the country:

    • tiger shells;
    • turtle shell;
    • corals.

    You can only check the full list of prohibited items before departure at the airport.

    Cosmetics

    Cosmetics

    An excellent gift option for the fair sex will be palm oil. It can be used as a sunscreen or as a hair care cream.

    Face and body masks made from snails will also be a great gift.

    We recommend that you buy cosmetics only in official pharmacies, avoid shopping in the marketplaces.

    Where to go shopping

    Where to go shopping

    A visit to the shops closest to the hotel will become a “setting” for a full-fledged Dominican shopping. Many large shopping centers have been built in Punta Cana, on the shelves of which a variety of goods (souvenirs, clothes, jewelry) are offered.

    We advise you to start your shopping from the Plaza Bavaro complex. In the center there are various shops with jewelry, clothes, shoes, cosmetics.

    The Plaza Punta Cana complex is popular with tourists. Here you can pick up souvenirs and quality clothes.

    In stores represented in shopping malls, you can find clothes of world brands (at a cost it will be about 40-50% cheaper than in the Russian Federation). For example, “signature” Levi jeans can be bought for 800-1500 pesos, and shoes can be purchased for up to 4000 Dominican pesos.

    For a full-fledged shopping, you can go to the “flea market” (El Cortesito Flea Market). Here you can find a variety of ethnic goods, Dominican clothes. With the ability to bargain, you can significantly save money.

    Characteristics of shopping centers

    Foreign citizens who come to Punta Cana on vacation are concerned about the issue of full-fledged shopping. Shopping can be done in local markets, as well as in large shopping malls. Why is it dangerous to buy goods on the market?

    Sellers specifically offer goods 6-10 times more expensive than the real price. Even in the case of a successful bargain, tourists can reduce the cost of goods by no more than 50%.

    The shopping centers of the Dominican resort have more reasonable and stable prices for goods. Let’s stop at the most popular shopping malls in the resort.

    Palma Real

    Palma Real

    Both the Dominicans themselves and leisure travelers consider this place the best option for active shopping. It is here that you can buy branded clothes and shoes, luxury jewelry.

    Some hotels in Punta Cana organize a free shuttle service to Palma Real for their guests. The shopping complex is located in the center of the resort, so guests can get here in a few minutes.

    In addition to shopping malls, there are good cafes and restaurants inside the center. In Palma Real Shopping Village you can buy original souvenirs at quite affordable prices.

    San Juan

    San Juan

    Many tourists associate

    San Juan first with a grocery supermarket, and only then with a full-fledged shopping complex.

    Dominicans love to come here. The San Juan Shopping Center has 50 stores. There are banking institutions, restaurants, exchange offices, a cinema, mobile operators here.

    The Las Americas gift shop deserves special attention. It is called the largest center in the country with Dominican handicrafts.

    In addition to shopping, you can enjoy interesting works by local artists (exhibitions of works are periodically organized in the renovated sales area).

    Duty free zone

    Duty free zone

    If there was no time for shopping during your trip to Punta Cana, you can use an excellent option for buying souvenirs and gifts – look into Duty Free, operating at the international airport of the Dominican resort. The duty-free zone offers:

    • perfume;
    • sweets;
    • leather goods;
    • souvenirs.

    The only negative is the high prices (the cost of some goods is 4-10 times more than in Punta Cana shopping malls).

    Total

    Shopping and malls in Punta Cana is a great opportunity to return with national souvenirs for relatives, friends, colleagues.

    You can choose from key rings, ballpoint pens, magnets, which depict the iconic objects of Punta Cana. If you approach shopping responsibly, you can buy high-quality jewelry with amber or larimar. A universal gift will be natural Dominican coffee, which in terms of taste is not inferior to the Brazilian invigorating drink.

    Picturesque seascapes, national faceless dolls, shark amulets are great options for gifts.
