Resident Assistants at Saint Joseph’s

Resident Assistants, or RAs, are vital within the University as they are involved in direct and extended contact with resident students. The Resident Assistants are typically the foundation of the hall to which they have been assigned and, as representatives of the University, are interested and trained individuals who are available for advice, counsel, support and encouragement. RAs serve as role models, mentors, peer-advisors and programmers. They develop community among resident students and uphold our shared community standards. The RA role is crucial to the residential experience, but it’s also fun and rewarding and provides some very real leadership skills.

Mary Sue hunting – Offtop on DTF

Good day to all. Having recently stumbled upon a small discussion here about the belonging of Geralt of Rivia to the glorious family of Sue, I remembered that quite often I meet unjustified accusations of certain characters in books, films or video games of being marijuana. Cause? First of all, rather vague ideas about the term itself, formed on conjecture or reading diagonally of a short meaning on the wiki.

Be that as it may, I decided to write a short opus in the style of an educational program dedicated to the topic of Mary Sue and her signs in pop culture characters. A quick note: regardless of the character’s gender, I prefer to use the canonical term “Mary Sue”, without “Marty Sue”. Still, this is a label, not a nickname for a particular test subject.

Part 1. Tell me your name and I’ll tell you who you are.

I think it makes no sense to dwell on the history of the appearance of the term itself. Mary Sue is the central character in Paula Smith’s cartoon Trekka’s Tales. According to the majority, the author deliberately collected all the available stamps in one character to ridicule the trend that still exists. Those. the metaphorical Mary Sue is the quintessence of those clichés that would later become signs of marijuana. nine0003

However, a legitimate question arises (well, it should arise): what is the problem with such a character? What is wrong with the spiritual heir or predecessor of Mary Sue?

Two questions – two answers:

1). In principle, the character itself is not interesting to follow. The plot or other things may keep you from prematurely deleting / throwing away this masterpiece, but definitely not the main character.

2). Low art value. As a rule, an author who has not mastered the creation of a character more deeply is not able to give the audience either interesting ideas or interesting experience. The exception, as always, is the intentional misunderstanding of the protagonist (and even then not always). nine0003

Later I will write why we need Mary Sue and her associates, but first we will deal with the “stuffing” of such characters. No, Blazkowicz, you don’t need to get an apron and a chainsaw today.

Who are Mary Sues? In modern pop culture (mostly for simile memes), the term “son of mom’s friend” is used, which is a Mary Sue synonym for non-literary characters.

What stamps are hidden under the famous surname? The most common set is to lose your parents early, to be extremely smart and attractive, charismatic, strong. Be better than others in at least half of the activities (preferably in all), easily achieve your goal, be recognized by everyone (even enemies), achieve success and power, and enjoy success with your gender. At the same time, the character, as a rule, has character traits that in real life hinder the achievement of at least half of the above. nine0003

The spiritual successor of Mary Sue is the one whose success is useless to doubt, who, if he suffers unfortunate defeats (but what kind of defeats are there? Rather unfortunate failures), then in the near future he will make up for everything in full.

Mary Sue’s spiritual heir is a walking compendium of everything we want to see in ourselves. Well, or at least we wish they saw it in us.

Mary Sue’s spiritual heir is the one to whom the whole world adapts.

Part 2. Long live our court – the most inhumane court in the world! nine0010

I repeat – Mary Sue is the quintessence of certain stamps. At the same time, any work – a book, a film, a game – is also a collection of stamps. No matter how original the work is, the human brain only combines previously gained experience, and does not create a new one. This means that in any work there may be (although in fact there are almost certainly) some of the clichés identified as Marysia. The only question is – how many of them?

i.e. in order to create a Mary Sue, it is not necessary to use only the previously described techniques. The original Mary Sue is just a manual that parses and ridicules the most brazen clichés. People who are trying to write a literary work are probably familiar with the so-called “Mariness Tests”, which can, if not very objectively, measure the degree of intensity of relationship with Sue. nine0003

Thus, if the topic of marijuana is raised in a discussion of a certain character, it means that with a high degree of probability some of this lady’s stamps are used in it.

Instead of a long analysis of the theory, I propose to take two examples and use them to analyze the problem raised. The first example will be Geralt, or rather, his non-involvement in this label, and the second … but what’s the difference, they haven’t figured out the first one yet!

Part 3. The Witcher Geralt hails from Ri… Mary Sue

I will say right away – I am evaluating not the quality of the work or game, but the character itself, so immediately ̶p̶o̶g̶o̶v̶o̶r̶i̶m̶ ̶o̶ ̶n̶a̶g̶r̶a̶d̶e̶ let’s get down to business.

Of course, like many pop culture favorites, Geralt did not do without Mary Sue clichés. What are his swordsmanship, love of sorceresses and fame worth? However, let’s make a list of such clichés:

* Lost his parents in childhood is already a weighty cliché, because it is with this cliché that the authors reinforce the value of the character’s achievements, as well as empathy for him. nine0003

* Not like everyone else. Witchers, as we know, are no longer quite people, but mutants, significantly superior to us in many respects, and their rarity practically confronts us with the fact that Geralt throughout most of his wanderings (especially in books) is the only one and not repeatable.

* A rare professional in a rare trade. An excellent stamp, because it turns out that the witcher has no particular competition, since the range of his actions significantly exceeds that of ordinary mercenaries due to his knowledge of monsters and his witcher uniqueness. In addition to this, he is also an excellent swordsman, despite the fact that killing people is not his profession. nine0003

* Fame – if he’s not Sue, then how the hell is this beggar being famous among the nobility? Ordinary mercenaries cannot afford this.

* Popularity among women. And what more! Powerful sorceresses, beautiful, smart… and who is he? After all, according to the descriptions, he was not handsome!

* Another savior of the world. Well, there is nothing to say here – indeed, our witcher, in fact, is one of the saviors of the whole world. Mary Sue, and more.

Geralt, Geralt, Imbovy Persian, Geralt, Geralt, Harmful Persian. nine0003

Well, if one judges only by this “extraction of facts”, then it becomes clear – this is Mary 2. 0. However, this is an incomplete picture. As I noted earlier, marijuness has a peculiarity – the character is imbued not because of achievements, but because the earth revolves around him.

Definitely, the stamp with the early loss of parents is very tired and widespread, however, you must admit, this is better than when the author leaves the parents alive and well, but completely forgets about their existence. The stamp is serious, but in itself nothing decisive. nine0003

Witchers have the same problem – they seem to exist, but somewhere there. However, from the plot side there is a rationale – the time of the witchers is running out, since the purpose of their craft has almost disappeared. There is no demand – there is no supply, so the witchers are rather outlandish little animals in the eyes of people than respected hard workers of a dangerous trade.

However, although there is not much work, it is there, and over the years of wandering Geralt gains experience with a steel blade, since with his mutant deviations he has superiority over most opponents. nine0003

As for fame, I only have this explanation – friendship with Buttercup the Bard, as well as several successful orders for heads of state. Yes, this is not a very frequent occurrence in reality, but it’s hard to call it a whim of Geralt himself.

Regarding women… apparently, in order to increase the interest of the audience, Sapkowski and the projects deliberately created this illogical cliché, but one thing can be said in his defense – attention from women can be attracted not only by appearance, but also by demonstration

charisma. Definitely.

It looks like whitewashing a character, doesn’t it? If there are arguments in defense, they are extremely weak against the backdrop of problems. However, there is one thing: in the presence of bold stamps, Geralt cannot make the world revolve around him. Yes, he is known among the nobility, but if they favor him, then only to do the work, or even completely expelled from their territory. Songs are composed about him, but most potential customers do not recognize him and are driven with nothing. He is a master of his craft, but is constantly hungry, skinned and quite often gets badly injured. He is the mentor of the Chosen One, but is not able to fully fulfill his obligations. He constantly loses friends, and in the end he also dies by no means a glorious death. nine0003

Geralt had every chance of becoming a Mary Sue, but he was saved by the “gray” fantasy genre.

Part 4. If there is opium here, then only the author.

Yes, I decided to show an example of a real Mary Sue. The last such character I met was the heroine of the book The Opium War by Rebecca Kuang, published in August. I don’t think I need to explain that I can’t prove the hero’s maritime quality without spoilers, right? Oh, come on.

SPOILERS!!! (more precisely, a brief retelling)

So, a brief history of a strong and independent character (in the truest sense of the word): once upon a time there was a girl, Rin, who grew up in a foster family at the level of a slave. The only way to break out of the circle of hell is to enter the coolest academy where military leaders were trained. In just two years, our smart heroine learns the exam program almost by heart and becomes the best in her region in terms of the number of points. As soon as he arrives at the academy, he manages to hit the snout of a high-born classmate offspring and turn almost everyone against him. In order not to be thrown out of the course, she repeats her training trick and becomes the best in all specialties, including hand-to-hand combat. For the first time in twenty years, she becomes the only student in a special training course where she is taught magic. It also turns out that she is also one of the last two representatives of the mega tough people who command fire. A war breaks out, in which she succeeds in getting promoted, and also becomes almost one with one of the gods and destroys an entire nation. Curtain. nine0003

It would seem – but Rina, like Geralt, constantly suffered hardships. Why is he not Sue and she is Sue? There are two reasons: first, the pitch. In The Opium War, the very description of deprivation occurs so casually that “burns on the wrists” are absolutely not remembered, but the result itself is remembered. And it is clear – the complete achievement of the goal. A little torment, and you will defeat everyone, including those who also did not sleep at night and trained.

Secondly, there is a line inherent in many Mary Sues – “from rags to riches.” Out of nobody, Rina became almost the most important in the country. And Geralt? What did he achieve, except for the love of sorceresses and songs in his honor? As he was a despised witcher, so he remained. nine0003

Part 5. What’s the strength, Sue?

So, I have already outlined the main ideas, but one “but” remains: is it so bad to be a Mary Sue? We are accustomed to scolding for the maritime nature of the work, however … is everything so bad? Definitely, the tendency to introduce such characters is frightening, but the scourge is not Mary Sue herself, but her mass character. I think that there should be works with similar characters, but on a much smaller scale. It’s like toilet humor comedies – they’re disgusting, and more disgusting in their numbers, but they’re just as terrible to drop them completely. nine0003

Mary Sue gives the audience her experience, albeit useless. Reading books, watching movies and playing games with such characters, we put ourselves in their place, becoming ideal in fantasies, becoming what a person, in principle, is not capable of being. Those who live in the slums want fame and fortune, those who are beaten by classmates want to become unsurpassed fighters, and virgins … Mary Sue should return to us, but not as often as we see her. We should not forget that a small part of it is in many works. nine0003

Bang Sue – Bangkok Central Station to open next year – Thailand News

After decades of inactivity, Thailand’s rail transport sector enters a renaissance

After several decades of inactivity, Thailand’s rail transport sector enters a renaissance

B Currently, in the Thai capital Bangkok, 10 public transport projects are under construction. Major rail projects are underway across the country, including a 308 km double track railway from Nakhon Ratchasima to Ubon Ratchathani. nine0003

Many municipalities, from Chiang Mai in the north to Phuket in the south, are also putting forward plans for their own rail systems.

Bang Sue Station is a mega station that will replace the century-old Hua Lamphong as Bangkok’s main railway hub. nine0003

The State Railways of Thailand (SRT) announces that the Bang Sue Central Station will open in January 2021 along with the Red Line Commuter Railway.

“When completed, Bang Sue Central Station will be the largest railway station in ASEAN. All diesel train routes that used to arrive at Hua Lamphong will eventually be moved here and the old railway station will be converted into a museum,” said SRT Deputy Director Worawut Mala. nine0003

  • Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong Railway Station will become half a museum
  • Pattaya plans to build a monorail and launch passenger routes around the city
  • Bangkok Central Rail Hub

Worawut said the new station will serve as a hub for rail transport, with platforms for diesel trains, electric trains, high-speed regional express trains, and a hub between Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi and Utapao airports.

The 15 billion baht plant is being built on 2,325 plots of land. Since it was originally planned as a railway center, the station will be equipped with technical depots for diesel and electric trains. Utilities will be located there, and an overpass will connect the station to the new Mo Chit bus terminal. nine0003

One of the main parts of the railway complex is the 186’030 square meters (m²) memorial dedicated to King Rama V, known as the father of Thailand’s railways. The statue of the king will be surrounded by a 14,000 m² fountain pond.

While construction of the station is nearing completion, work on the memorial has not yet begun, as it must first be approved by the Royal Family Bureau. It is unlikely that the memorial will be completed by the time the station opens. nine0003

The main part of the station consists of a three-storey building, not counting the underground car park and the superstructure above the central part. When completed, the building will be over 596 meters long and 244 meters wide. With a total usable area of 274’192 m², the station will have a total of 26 platforms.

There will also be enough space for car parking – 1624 cars, which is important for passengers, as the station will be connected to the blue metro line.

“Ticket counters, retail and grocery stores, waiting areas and the Blue Line crossing will be located on the first floor,” Vorawut said.

“The mezzanine will house control rooms and shops, while the second floor will house four platforms for commuter trains on the red line and eight platforms for diesel trains.”

According to Worawut, the third floor will have 10 platforms for regional high-speed trains and two platforms for high-speed rail links to airports. nine0003

“The central station will help ease Bangkok’s train congestion as Hua Lamphong Station has a bottleneck that forces diesel trains to take turns entering and exiting the station” , he said.

    Revival of the Red Line

Bang Sue Central Station will be part of the commuter rail system, the Metro Red Line. It will serve as the terminus of the 26 km Dark Red Line between Bang Sue and Rangsit, from where passengers can transfer to another 15 km Light Red Line to Taling Chan. nine0003

Construction work on the Red Line, which began in January 2009, was completed at a cost of 9. 08 billion baht. The installation of signaling systems and the arrival of trains are now expected, Worawut said.

By the end of the year, the government plans to find contractors to work on three sections of the Red Line – the 8.4 km section of Rangsit – Thammasat, the 14 km section of Taling Chan – Salaya, and the 8 km section between Taling Chan and the hospital Siriraj. All contracts are collectively valued at around 23.2 billion baht. nine0003

The commissioning of the Dark Red Line on the Red Line will provide rail links between the northern and southern parts of Bangkok, while the Light Red Line will link the city’s eastern edge to the west.

“When the lines open in 2021, we expect around 208,000 passengers to pass through Bang Sue Central Station daily. By 2032, their number will increase to 396,000 people a day,” said Worawut.

“Meanwhile, the Light Red and Dark Red lines are expected to serve 86,000 and 130,000 passengers daily for the next 12 years.
