Postal code is a short set of numbers or letters included in a postal address and is used by postal companies to simplify and expedite the delivery of mail.
Its form varies from country to country, but most often represents one or more larger or smaller geographic areas.
Some special codes are also sometimes reserved for institutions or companies that receive large volumes of mail (eg the cedex system in France).

In mechanized mail countries, the postal code is converted into a barcode and printed on the envelope.

Historical
The need for quick mail sorting to speed up routing and distribution has been a priority for postal operators since their inception.
This need is primarily felt in very large cities, where the population is growing rapidly and the postman no longer has the ability to recognize each recipient individually. Several cities are subdivided into postal sectors. In London, districts were defined from 1857, and their code was indicated on street signs. In France, Paris was already divided into districts, which also corresponds to the post office. At the beginning of XX – th century, the United States does the same in big cities called with postal delivery area number (postal delivery area number), e.g. BOSTON 9
, but it does not appear that there was formalized use until the 1940s.

The first country to implement a complete postcode system was the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1932. Consisting of two groups of numbers separated by У
by the Cyrillic letter – the initial letter for Ukraine (Ukraine) – it improved mail delivery. This device has worked up to 1939 years old
Representation of postal codes on the back of a letter in 1943.
A few years later, in 1941, the German Post from the Third Reich established a postal code due to expansion in various occupied territories, causing difficulty in determining the locality of the destination (with very different names between German and in the local language (in particular, Polish) The various geographical areas of Germany and the occupied territories are indicated by 1 or 2 digits called Postleitzahl (zip code). This numbering will be changed in 1945.
Two decades later, the postcode begins to be developed: in 1959 in the UK, in 1963 in the US, in the US. in Switzerland.
In 2019, out of 200 countries with a postal administration, 60 do not use postcodes.

How to find out the postal code at the address online
With the advent of the Internet, many have forgotten what letters in envelopes are. It's so easy to go in and immediately send, without leaving your home. And the recipient will read the email within a few seconds.
But ordinary letters are still sent, usually business correspondence with the need to send documentation, or vice versa, letters are sent to far corners of Russia, where "the Internet has not yet set foot". And in order for the letter to reach the place, it should be sent according to all the rules. nine0005
What is the postal code
One of the most important rules is the correct spelling of the postal code. An index is not just a number. According to the Federal Law of the Russian Federation "On Postal Communication", postal codes are considered to be a certain six-digit number of digits, which is assigned to each department and facility.
Initially, back in the early 20th century, the index consisted of numbers and letters. During the difficult times of the Second World War, this sending system was simplified to dialing only from numbers. In the middle of the 20th century, an improved indexing system was optimized and introduced in Germany. nine0005
Since 2012, 192 countries have been included in a single register of post-war use of the index. In Russia, in addition to the written index by hand, it is customary to fill out a code stamp. What it is? This is a special field for filling in the index numbers in a special printed way. The introduction of a code stamp is a necessary measure for automated recognition of the index, and therefore simplifies the work of the post office in sending letters and parcels to the desired address.
The correct spelling of the index is a guarantee of the correctness and speed of delivery. The six-digit indexing is created and constructed in such a way that the post office index number is the index number of a particular structure, house or building. In some cases, a separate postal code can be assigned to the whole structure. Most often these are administrative buildings. nine0005
