Spain’s postal code data depicts the boundaries of over 11,000 postal codes. This postal code system was introduced by Spain’s national postal service (Correos) in order to implement automatic sortation and efficient mail routing across the country.

Spain’s Postal Code Structure

Spanish postal codes—known as código postal—consist of five digits, and these digits represent the following:

• 11xxx: The first two digits represent a province.
• xx1xx: The third digit represents a major city or basic itinerary.
• xx1xx: The third digit indicates the type of delivery, such as mail boxes, business addresses, or regular mail delivery.
• xxx11: The fourth and fifth digits specify a delivery area, secondary delivery route, or rural link itinerary.

Current Postal Code Range in Spain

The current postal codes (codigo postal) in Spain (ES) range from 01001 – 52006. The lowest 5-digit postal code (01001) targets Vitoria Gasteiz—the capital city of the Basque Autonomous Community. The highest postal code (52006) is located in the Spanish autonomous city of Melilla.

The postcode system of Spain consists of a series of codes used to improve the operation of the postal service in Spain. The postal codes were introduced in Spain in 1982, coinciding with the start of automated correspondence classification processes.

Spanish postal codes consist of 5 digits, the first 2 of which refer to the provinces in alphabetical order (according to the official name – the year of foundation), followed by the cities of Ceuta and Melilla, whose codes at the beginning coincided with these. the provinces of Cadiz and Malaga respectively, and a few years later they were assigned new codes, as can be seen from this table:

The last three digits indicate the postal code. The capitals of these provinces and some large cities are divided into different postal zones, while for the rest of the localities, the same code applies to the whole locality or several neighboring localities. To facilitate the introduction of new postcodes, cities with postal districts such as Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia decided that the first digit of the new postal district would be zero and the next two would be the same. old postal district.
