Teatro Victoria Espinosa

 SALA EXPERIMENTAL VICTORIA ESPINOSA TORRES

Theater Olympics. Top 10 performances of this summer.

Theater

June 14, 2019

Ilyina Tatyana

On June 15, the solemn opening ceremony of the Theater Olympics will be held in St. Petersburg. This wide-ranging project was created in 1995 by renowned theater director Theodoros Terzopoulos and originally took place as a project bringing together different theater schools of different cultures in the home of the theater in Delphi, Greece. nine0010

In honor of the 25th anniversary in 2019, the Olympics will be held simultaneously in two countries – Russia and Japan. Famous theaters of the world, such as: Theater Bouffe du Nord (Paris, France), Berliner Ensemble (Berlin, Germany), Theater Company FC Bergman, (Antwerp, Belgium), People’s Art Theater of Beijing (China), National Theater (Budapest, Hungary) ), Attis Theater (Athens, Greece), SCOT Theater Company (Toga, Japan), Schaubühne (Berlin, Germany), Old Theater (Krakow, Poland), Piccolo Teatro di Milano (Milan, Italy), Horus Theater (Impachal, India), Bulandra Theater (Bucharest, Romania), Nantier-Amandieu (Paris, France) and others will show their performances in the cities of Russia and Japan, and local theaters will visit the regions with tours. nine0003

Most of the Russian events will take place on the main stage of the Olympics – in the Alexandrinsky Theater (Main and New Stages), some will be supported by the Music Hall, the Baltic House, the Mikhailovsky Theater, the Artplay Design Center. Part of the performances will take the theaters of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, Magadan, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Ryazan, Sochi.

Below we offer an overview of the summer performances of the Theater Olympics, which are important to visit.

16, 17 June. Bells and spells. Directed by Victoria Thiere Chaplin (France). The premiere took place on July 12, 2018, Spoleto, Italy. The main stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre. nine0014

An imaginative performance filled with humor and absurdity. Its main character is a kleptomaniac, every thing that reflects her world reveals its charm to the viewer and responds with an unexpected action, being included in the communication and movement of meanings of a special artistic reality. As the authors write, “there is no place for logic, prudence or moderation.”

18, 19 June. Donka. Letter to Chekhov. Directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca (Switzerland). The premiere took place on January 29, 2010. St. Petersburg Music Hall Theatre. nine0014

The performance was created as a dedication to Anton Pavlovich Chekhov and his works. Filled with images, impressions, elusive associations and poetry, the performance appears as a light haze or a colorful mosaic of successive Chekhov characters.

June 19, 20. universal history. Directed by David Espinoza (Spain). The premiere took place in September 2018. Magadan State Musical and Drama Theatre.

The performance is the result of an artistic interpretation of the events in the development of human civilization, shown to the viewer through the prism of play and self-irony. Objects, puppets, audiovisual devices, choreography become the language of narration. nine0003

June 21, 22. Bosch dreams. Directed by Samuel Tetro (Canada). The premiere took place in September 2016. Theater-festival “Baltic House”.

The performance is a modern theater and circus show created in memory of the Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch by the 7 Fingers Circus Theatre, the Republique Theatre, the Hieronymus Bosch Foundation and the Circolo Festival. “In the supernatural universe, the episodes of the artist’s life and the plots of his paintings are mixed.”

June 22, 23. Formosa. Directed by Lin Hwai-Min (Taipei). The premiere took place on November 24, 2017. The main stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre. nine0014

Formosa! (Great!) is the word that Portuguese sailors shouted when they first saw Taiwan in the 17th century. The performance is Lin Hwai-Min’s farewell performance about his native country, full of poetry, beauty, memories, inspired by legends and songs.

28, 29, 30 June. Land of Nod. Concept — FC Bergman (Belgium). The premiere took place on May 7, 2015. Artplay Design Center.

The performance was an artistic rethinking of the long closure in Antwerp of a significant place for the urban environment and culture – the Rubens Gallery (as part of the reconstruction of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts). Mythological and biblical stories are interspersed with mystical incidents. Images and metaphors reveal deep socio-philosophical meanings. nine0003

June 29, 30. Avenger tragedy. Directed by Declan Donnelan (Italy). The premiere took place on October 9, 2018. The main stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre.

The famous English director staged the first performance with Italian artists in Italian. The plot is based on the text of William Shakespeare’s younger contemporary, Thomas Middleton. Its heroes live in Italy, the ideology and worldview of which, at the time of the author, were considered to have a pernicious influence on Europe. Hence the society and heroes, obsessed with sins, lust, fame, narcissism, convincing others of their own decency and purity. nine0003

June 30th. Just filming. Directed by Christian Smeds (Finland). The premiere took place on October 14, 2016. Sakhalin International Theater Center A.P. Chekhov.

The performance is a hymn to the love of cinema. Actors Annamaria Lang and Johan Ulfsak talk about cinema, show scenes from films. “Their duet is passion, humor and craziness. But all this is a game against the background of scattered popcorn.

6, 7 July. Oedipus. Directed by Robert Wilson (Italy). The premiere took place on July 5, 2018. Theater-festival “Baltic House”. nine0014

The director uses the text of Sophocles (430 BC) in the classical Italian translation by Ettore Romagnoli (1926) as the literary basis of the performance, but sometimes refers to earlier translations, or includes scenes from ancient literature missing in the text. An important role in the production is played by the blurring of boundaries between music, theater and visual arts.

14, 15 July. Quiet evening of dance. Directed by William Forsythe (UK). The premiere took place on October 4, 2018. Mikhailovsky Theatre. nine0014

“Quiet Evening of Dance” is represented by seven dancers. The program includes two new works – “Epilogue” and “Seventeen/Twenty-One”, two works that have received a new reading – “Dialogue” (DUO 2015) and “Catalogue” (Second Edition), as well as “Prologue”, an excerpt from ballet “Seventeen/Twenty-One”

In addition to performances, the Theater Olympiad includes a large scientific and educational part, which will be presented by a series of lectures and intensive master classes from leading theater figures from around the world. nine0003
