There are new restaurants, there are well-established restaurants, there are old restaurants, and there are dinosaur restaurants, those that have delighted, surprised, and sometimes upset the ever-changing Moscow public for many years. Finding or remembering such dinosaurs can be difficult. They are like shadows. I found one such Japanese restaurant in Arbat lanes. This relic of the nineties is called – Tokyo . For those who don’t know or don’t remember, in that old era when Tokyo was popular, cell phones were more like radios, the most famous social network was the “school profile”, car radios were carried around, and Japanese cuisine was exotic . Then almost no one knew what sushi, sashimi, ramen, tempura or ginger were, and the mention of raw fish caused slight disgust. It is now Japanese dishes that are a mass hobby, but then only a few were interested in Japan, and for them (and for the Japanese) there were very good restaurants, such as Sapporo, Sakura, Fuji, Kamakura and, of course, Tokyo – the first “teppan-yaki” in Moscow.
For a long time Tokyo lived in the Rossiya Hotel. Now the legendary hotel is no more. Now a huge long-term construction flaunts there, but Tokyo still exists, only at the intersection of small and large Afanasevsky lanes in an old yellowish mansion. Inside, everything is like from the nineties: furniture, decorations, lack of visitors. On Saturday evening in the restaurant, except for a lonely elderly security guard and a single waitress, not a soul. Several rooms have teppan tables, while the others are just tables and uncomfortable chairs covered in red cloth.
The menu is large and shabby. The photographs have faded. The pages are gone. But the list of dishes is impressive. I immediately remember cheerful evenings at the Kremlin, a riot of culinary actions at the teppan tables, Japanese music and exotic dishes. That fun and noise in Tokyo is no longer there, but there is quality Japanese food. You can try everything, because everything is delicious, just keep in mind that the food in Tokyo has nothing to do with the modern near-Japanese cuisine of new Moscow. The chef, our compatriot Sergey Bocharnikov, knows his business. From the dishes you can see that he has extensive experience behind him, gained while working with Japanese colleagues. I liked everything I ordered: tempura, and rolls with salmon, and sushi with tuna, and shabu-shabu with marbled beef, which no one “Wagu” or “Wagui” calls names.
The result is:
Tokyo is a place from the past and not for everyone. There is no modern, no trendy, it is empty and quiet, but it is very tasty, especially “shabu-shabu”.
“Tokyo” – Japanese cuisine restaurant. The menu is dominated by traditional authentic dishes. A separate hall – up to 35 people – is offered for banquets. A separate menu for such events has been specially compiled.
