    Dry channel

The construction of the canal, crossing the upper reaches of the ravine, marks the place where the laurel forest, growing interspersed with thickets of wax and heather, ends, and the thermophilic forest begins. This channel has never been used, but its presence testifies to the importance of water sources, of which there are as many as six in the vicinity. In addition, the village of Benchihigua, located at the head of the Barranco de Santiago ravine, is one of the places on La Gomera that receives the most surface water. nine0003

    Dike near the riverbed

Water flowing from Agando, one of the six springs in the headwaters of the ravine, flows down the riverbed, creating a stream of freshness. In the place where the route crosses the channel, you can see a volcanic formation – a dike rising up the slope. Dikes on Homer are called “taparruchas”.

    Key to water

The abundance of water resources is evidenced by the numerous aqueducts located near Benchihigua. At this point, water from the sources of the gorge is distributed over agricultural land. Despite the fact that this village, like the settlement of Lo del Gato, is practically abandoned, in the middle of the 20th century there were almost 300 inhabitants. nine0003

    Grain and cross

In the center of Benchihigua there is a large area where grain used to be threshed, which now allows access to the slopes of the gorge by car. Next to it is the chapel of St. John the Baptist, who was the patron saint of the island’s nobility, the Counts of La Gomera. The large threshing floor reminds us of the past of the slopes around the village when grain was grown here. Now there is no more agriculture here, just as there are no permanent residents left.

    Surroundings of Lo del Gato

Going down the ravine, on the left, next to the Canarian milkweed, you can see the village of Lo del Gato. This sparse settlement, living off agriculture, is an example of how difficult life was inside the deep ravines of the island of Gomera. We have just passed by what constitutes the main natural resource of the gorge – a well below the village of Benchihigua and a canal of the same name in the arm of the main channel. nine0003

The most important thing in the narrow section of the ravine through which we move is the careful use of water. Passing two unusual reservoirs with an overflow system, on our right hand we see a curious water mill used for grinding grain. Looking at the bottom of it, you can see the hole through which water comes out, causing the wheel located at the bottom of the tank to rotate. nine0003

    Pastrana

Nestled on the southern slope of the ravine, this settlement marks the beginning of the last leg of the journey. The irrigated lands are used for agriculture and several examples of traditional architecture can be found. We can continue along the road or go down to the channel, which in this part of the ravine has undergone quite strong changes.

We emerge from the ravine near the mouth, near the settlement of Playa Santiago and its port. Although there are no more banana plantations in the area, the flat area in front of the wide pebbly beach is reminiscent of the agricultural past.

Nicaragua, San Juan del Sur – Protected by Jesus (en.infoglobe.cz)

    Published: 23.3.2020

The city of San Juan del Sur (originally a fishing village) has become one of the most visited places in Nicaragua. It is full of especially surfers, beaches and nightlife. It is well accessible and is a picturesque, multicultural and young city.

It is in vain to look for historical architecture in this city, but it has its own historical charm. And straight gold, in Victorian houses on the waterfront. Because they were built in period California Gold Rush (1848–1855). The Golden Route, connecting New York to California, was supposed to deliver adventurers who went to look for gold in California. But on it they were in danger of a collision with the Indians, and the journey lasted three months. So people used the route through Nicaragua. People sailed to the Atlantic coast and then floated down the San Juan River until they crossed Lake Cocibolca . After that, the travelers took the train to San Juan del Sur, from where they went to the port in California. In fact, it was the first transoceanic canal in America, and this journey lasted one month. nine0003

From Ometepe we took the ferry back to Sao Jorge and then we ate the empanada. We hitchhiked to the city of San Juan del Sur and it was no problem. The city itself surprised us with its appearance. Just a seaside resort, bikini shops everywhere, lots of hotels, hostels and restaurants.

We were also quite surprised by the prices. All of a sudden everything became much more expensive. Perhaps we are approaching the borders of Costa Rica, which is the most expensive country in Central America . We agreed on a discount at the hotel and went to the beach. The city stretches between two hills, on the shore of a crescent-shaped bay. The beach is mostly young people playing baseball or football, tourists and surfers. Only the water seemed rather cold to us, and there is not much shade here.

At the end of the bay there is the remains of a suspension bridge that will lead us to the Talanguera area. From there begins the ascent to the hill at the northern end of the bay, which is topped by a monumental sculpture Cristo de la Misericordia . The sculpture of Jesus, 25 meters high, is one of the highest in the world. Here it will be such a short walk up the mountain, and the entrance is paid. But from here you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the city and the entire bay. Of the churches there is only one Parroquia San Juan Bautista .

The most beautiful beach is, of course, at sunset, at this time the city begins nightlife, bars and discos. San Juan del Sur was one of the next places along the way where we didn’t get much sleep at night, because people were noisy in the streets, music was playing and motorcycles were driving. So choose a hotel where there will be silence at night. nine0003

The first one is related to visiting Costa Rica’s northern neighbor, Nicaragua. You can go on your own or with an organized tour. However, we rather recommend the latter option, as crossing the border is not entirely easy. The guides already know how to organize everything properly and will save you hours of waiting. nine0003
