Monica Puig: “It seemed to me that there were a million double faults” – Tennis

Puerto Rican Monica Puig, who defeated French Kristina Mladenovic 7:6, 4:6, 6:3 in the quarterfinals of the tournament in Eastbourne, commented on the victory.

“I don’t think this match was as high as the Wozniacki match. I was a little more mistaken, there were more double mistakes – it seemed to me that there were a whole million of them. But the most important thing is that I didn’t get hung up on them, but thought about what to do next. I always try to keep a positive attitude. Of course, I am pleased to win and reach the semi-finals.” nine0003

Wimbledon. Fifth extra

The very first day of Wimbledon brought several surprises at once. The women’s and men’s tournaments were left without the fifth seed. But if the relegation of Sara Errani, with all due respect to the Italian, is not so surprising, then the defeat of Rafael Nadal has become one of the loudest sensations in world tennis in recent years. nine0003

Experts assessed the Spaniard’s chances of success on the courts of the All England Lawn Tennis Club in different ways, but no one expected such a quick failure. Belgian Steve Darcis left Nadal on the sidelines in just three games. Rafa did not show his true level, losing to his opponent in all respects. Especially serious is the advantage of the 135th racket of the world in actively won balls – 53 against 32. The two-time Wimbledon champion could not explain what the problem was.

Perhaps it was tired due to the huge number of matches in a row after the injury. Well, the London tournament again became fatal for the Spaniard. Last season, he lost to Lukas Rosol in the second round, after which he did not compete for seven months due to an injury. Returning, Rafa defeated only two meetings. Now, for the first time in his career, Nadal lost in the first round of the Grand Slam tournament. We also note that since 2006, none of the tennis players with such a low rating has been able to beat the Spaniard. nine0003

As for Sara Errani, it would be naive to believe that the Italian will go far in London. At this tournament, she could not go beyond the third round. Now she was stopped by Puerto Rican Monica Puig. Still, the fans were once again convinced that Errani shows the best tennis on the ground.

Our athletes performed exactly as we expected. Russian girls Maria Sharapova and Ekaterina Makarova go further. The first racket of our country suffered a little with the Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic (after all, the first match of the season on grass), and the 25th seeded calmly dealt with the Swedish Johanna Larsson. nine0003

Unless Andrei Kuznetsov deserves special praise, who for the first time in his career reached the second round at Wimbledon, defeating the Spaniard Albert Montañez in four sets. The best tennis player in Russia, Mikhail Youzhny, had no problems with the Dutchman Robin Hase. The excellent form of the 20th seed allows us to hope that he will reach the equator of the tournament.

But the other three representatives of Russia in the men’s tournament, as expected, laid down their arms. The 416th racket of the world, Igor Andreev, who has the lowest rating in this tournament, resignedly lost to the Pole Lukas Kubot. Evgeny Donskoy fought as best he could with the American giant John Isner, but the tie-break lover did not give up. Finally, Alexander Bogomolov lost without a chance to the Spaniard Tommy Robredo. nine0003
