Vieques bioluminescent bay: Mosquito Bioluminescent Bay | Discover Puerto Rico

Bioluminescent Bay – Casa de Kathy

Vieques “bio-bay” is said to be the brightest  in the world.  You will kayak or boat to the center of Mosquito bay and see pretty blue sparkling water.  Some say it is the 8th wonder of the world.  Some people travel to Vieques for only one night just to have this magical experience. Don’t forget we also have some of the best beaches in the Caribbean.

This is a list of a few companies operating government-endorsed tours. Tours are in kayaks except for Island Adventures.  Most also offer snorkeling trips. Reserving a few days in advance is advisable, but not necessary.

  • Abe’s Bio Bay  787- 741-2134 or 787-436-2686

  • JAK Water Sports (clear bottom kayaks) 787-644-7112

  • Melaya’s Bio Bay Tours: 787-222-7055

  • Bieke Eco-Tours: 787-922-2701

  • Taino Bio Bay Tours: 787-349-6964

  • Fun Brothers: 787-435-9372

  • Salty Spirit Tours: (787) 477-8664, info@salty-spirit. com

Other tours to the BioBay may be found in this online directory.

Tours to the bio-bay start at about $60.00 per person (as of Nov,, 2021). Rates do vary.  Some tours use clear bottom boats and charge a little more. Most people find handling the kayak easy – they do accept children on the kayak tours.  You can schedule your tour after you arrive in Vieques, BUT in high season, holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, school vacation weeks, Easter, etc., you may want to book at least a few days in advance.   Of course, there is nothing wrong with making your reservation a week or two in advance. The tours leave about 6:30 PM and sometimes there is a late tour at 9:00 or 10:00 PM depending on the season and demand.

The brilliance of the bio-bay is more intense without a moon in the sky. But most any night, you will still have a wonderful experience. Even two nights after the full moon it is great time because the moon rises late in the night.  Avoid going to the Bay 4-5 days before the full moon, the night of the full moon and the day after the full moon. In this calendar,  the white circles indicate the full moon:  Moon Phase Calendar

When you go to the bio-bay, avoid using sunscreens or insect repellent which may pollute the bay.  Leave valuables and your camera in your guest house except the money you need to pay for the tour.   Unless you have a special camera, you cannot capture the glow on a camera.
