Come prepared

Dec 2022 • Family

We took the ferry from Ceiba PR we purchased the tickets in person days in advanced the online app only releases some tickets every few days and doesn’t release a lot buying them in person was way more helpful.
Below is the price list, be sure to book with plenty of time
Your mode of transportation, for your excursions on the island. always arrive 1-1.5 hr prior to your boarding time, and allow for arriving late which happens often.
As you get off the ferry there’s taxis there waiting to take you $5 a person Our Taxi Driver was great he picked us up he is the only one with the back trailer attached to his taxi to load up beach stuff chairs umbrellas coolers ect TUTY took us around and dropped us at the area we wanted and picked us up promptly and on time!
Call in advance to ask for him.
As you arrive you can walk to either get your rental car or golf cart the town is 3 min walk to the right as soon as you get off the ferry. Most places like the car rentals pick you up. We chose playa Esperanza/Sun Bay (Playa del Cayó) is no waves and not deep lots of places to eat, bathrooms, and kayak rentals ect. Other beaches have no food no bathrooms.

Wonderful Vieques island!

Dec 2022 • Family

Wonderful island, the foods there are wonderful. And the local people are so friendly and helpful. The only thing is inconvenient is taxi. There is no Uber there. You have to contact a taxi driver in advance.

Truly Unique Place

Dec 2022

We just returned from three days in Vieques and it was insanely fun. First, if you are the type of person who seeks luxury, or a completely manicured island experience, this is not the place for you. There are wild horses (and horse ‘leave behinds’) all over, and there are also feral dogs, cats, and chickens that often wonder between your legs at restaurants. We were awakened by roosters every morning, and we bounced down pot-holed roads that would land my stateside car in the shop with a hefty repair bill.

At this point, you might be wondering why I gave it five stars. Because to us, the things mentioned above only added to the uniqueness and the adventure of it all. The beaches are truly some of the most beautiful I have ever seen, and even the week before Christmas, they were virtually empty. The Bio Bay is not to be missed. My son described the view under the clear kayak as paddling over the opening of the Star Wars movie. The food is delicious and the people are friendly and helpful.

Wonderful place to spend time

Dec 2022

My wife and I spent 4 days on Vieques. There are plenty of fun activities and wonderful beaches to enjoy. I would definitely recommend staying in Esperanza. It is close to Mosquito bay for the bioluminescent bay tour. There are plenty of beaches to relax on that are not crowded, Coconut beach, LaChiva, Pata Prieta and Sun bay beach to name a few. Not only are these beaches good for relaxing on but there is also some good snorkeling to be done from those beaches. There are plenty of good food options all within working distance. we had good meals at El Quenepo and Duffys. If you go to Vieques and stay in Esperanza an excellent place to stay is the Vieques guesthouse, Todd and Amanda are fabulous, you wont meet nicer people, the rooms are clean and well kept and it is within walking distance to all the restaurants and bars. I would recommend Vieques to everyone who goes to Puerto Rico

Best Way to See Mosquito Bay

Feb 2022

I did sooooo much research, including talking to a Puerto Rican friend of my husband’s about the bioluminescent tours and was so glad I didn’t listen. It doesn’t matter if it’s a full moon. I don’t know if it’s only certain times of the year, but check the sunset and moon rise. We went between (early tour in February) Mosquito Bay was pitch black with only one other small group. By the time we returned, moon was bright with dozens of people waiting.

Bumpy golf cart ride

Nov 2022

rented golf cart, lots of bumpy roads, and went all over trying to find a place for snorkeling. Found some nice beaches and some not so nice, just have to explore. Everything needs work from what we have seen, but a different place to visit.

Not for me

Nov 2022

We just back from Vieques, and it was pretty miserable. The main draw for us (we were invited along with other family members) was the Bio Bay. Unfortunately, we were there during rainy season, and full moon, so we were told there was “slim to none” chance of seeing the luminescent dinoflagellates.
Due to storms, the beaches were covered in seaweed, and the waves pretty rough, though my husband did go snorkeling one day, at El Gallito Beach, and saw some pretty fish.
It really seemed 3rd world, with the terrible roads/tons of potholes. The toilet in our rental was unusable for other than urine, for 5 of the 7 days.
It was 85 degrees, and extremely high humidity, so pretty miserable to be out during the day.
We did climb Monte Pirata, despite the warnings of prosecution (locals said it was OK).
Locals seemed to have no pride in keeping trash off the beaches and keeping their properties looking decent.
The horses were everywhere, many of them looking very bony.
The abandoned US military buildings, and the many warnings about UXO in the wildlife refuge were a bit unnerving. I don’t know why the US military didn’t clean up their mess, after they left.
The locals were not particularly friendly, but not overtly hostile.
Just not my kind of place, and would not consider returning.

Not for the faint of heart.

Aug 2022

The roads are terrible (narrow and lot of pot-holes…even in the refuge). It feels like you are in a third wold country overall. The people aren’t too friendly. They almost acted annoyed by us being there, even though we are ALL U.S. citizens and tourism is probably the only thing that keeps them afloat. Luckily, the beaches were beautiful, quiet, and had good snorkeling, so worth the trip.

Best cars and service here!!

Jul 2022

They offer rentals for a day plus an hourly rate after the 24 hours at 7.50 per hour. They pick you up wherever you are to get the rental and drop you off when you return rental – even to ferry. While other places charge for pick up and drop off!! Employees are so friendly. Car was nice and clean. We forgot out pack in the rental after drop off and Hiram turned around so we could get our bag!! Highly recommend them!!

Vieques

July 2016 • For two

The easiest way to get to the island of Vieques is by ferry, costs only a couple of dollars, takes 1.5 hours, from the city of Fajardo, several times a day. We spent several days on this island and did not regret it at all. The island is big and you need your own transport. We rented a scooter. The island is very well equipped, everywhere there are good roads, signs, information. A tourist card is freely available in many institutions of the two main cities of the island. The map shows all the main beaches and attractions. There are many paradise beaches in Vieques. There are also more civilized ones, with good parking, gazebos, and there are completely wild and completely deserted ones. The best snorkeling at Mosquito Pier. nine0003

Excellent beaches

Jan. 2016 • For two

Excellent beaches, beautiful nature, the island is washed by the Caribbean Sea on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. Comfortable weather in January-February (when we were there), diving, snorkeling, inexpensive accommodation. The rest – everything is like on any island, a little expensive. Limited selection of products. Inexpensive fish products at the Fish Market, including exotic ones. From Miami – 2.5 hours by plane. Recommended as a budget holiday. We rented a house for 2 couples for $130 per night and rented a cheap car. nine0003

Peaceful Piece of Paradise

Nov. 2016 • For two

My girlfriend and I decided to take our Thanksgiving holiday trip to Puerto Rico around Vieques – a fantastic choice! It’s doable if you try to even spot flights to San Juan with (very short) flights from mainland Puerto Rico to Vieques. The island has a very relaxing atmosphere and remote tranquility and offers a great place for snorkeling and diving! nine0003

My Favorite Island Ever

Feb. 2017

I spent three weeks every winter in Vieques for three years. Come July, I’m starting to crave the pristine secluded tourist free beaches and the low-key lifestyle here. The island is not for everyone. If you are looking for grand hotels and exclusive shops – don’t go here. I’m afraid this island will soon need to be discovered and corrupted, but for now it’s bliss. nine0003

Great beaches and many options.

June 2017 • With friends

Vieques is the place to visit for great beaches and plenty of places to stay. From good hotels, bed and breakfast, or Airbnb. Lots of grocery stores if you have an airbnb and it’s very convenient to eat. Rent a Jeep to visit all the time on the beach allows. Don’t miss the bio tour of the bay. Take a plane from Ceiba Airport if you want a 6 minute flight. You can take the ferry from Fajardo if you want a 1.5 hour boat ride and save money. I highly recommend the flight. nine0003
