October Weather in Jamaica – 2023 – Winter Sun Expert

Jamaica is an island country located off the North American coast situated in the Caribbean Sea. Part of the Greater Antilles, it is the third largest of them all, third in size to Hispaniola and Cuba. The island of Jamaica was originally inhabited by the Taino and Arawaks before falling under Spanish rule. A large number of slaves were brought in by the Spanish settlers where they worked on their sugar plantations. In 1655, the English took over the island from the Spanish and started exporting sugar in large quantities. The island has the third-largest population of the Americas and its people are a mixture of European, Indian, Sub Saharan Africans, East Asians, and a few other minority races. Evidence shows that the island has been inhabited by early humans since as far back as 4000BC although there is very little evidence of what their lives were like.

Despite its small size, the island has a lot of global influence especially in the entertainment industry, in sports like athletics and the Rastafari religion. This is part of what draws visitors to the island shores as they seek to partake in the island’s amazing culture. An average of 4.3 million tourists visit Jamaica yearly

Rain

How much rain can you expect? It varies.

Traditionally, the rainy periods are April and May/June and again October to November/December. June and July are generally the driest months. February and March are also traditionally dry months too. This pattern does vary from year to year with much more variability noted in recent years.

The amount of rainfall and the frequency of showers or days of rain can vary quite a bit in Jamaica, even in nearby towns. For example, there could be significant rainfall in the town of Discovery Bay with hardly a raindrop in our area, five minutes drive away.

In general, the more north-easterly sections of Jamaica get the most rain. These areas would represent areas east of Ocho Rios and on into Portland, where rainfall averages can be significant.

Rain in Jamaica often is at night or early mornings. Sometimes, rain comes on during the daytime in short quick spurts only to disappear just as quickly as it came. In the rainy period, there can be several consecutive days of rain.

On average, there are about 16 days with some rainfall, defined as any rain at all, during the month of October.

Average monthly rainfall for the month of October is 8. 1 inches. Discovery Bay area gets less rain than Ocho Rios.

If there are heavy rains, on-river activities, such as river rafting, might be canceled due to high water levels or rapid rivers. Water clarity could also be affected depending on how much rain occurred in the mountains.

Sea water temperature

The sea is warmest during July through October. Average sea water temperature in Discovery Bay in October is about 84°F/29°C.

What to wear in Jamaica in October?

Remember, Jamaica is Summer year-round. You have more to worry about with tour buses that crank up the air-conditioning than cold weather in Jamaica. I usually wear a light jacket of some sort on the flight down so that I will have it with me just in case I need it one evening – or on a tour bus!

Read our article about how to pack for your Jamaica vacation to get more tips.

Where in Jamaica should you stay for your vacation in a post-COVID world

Early on in the pandemic, the government of Jamaica had designated special areas, called resilient corridors. for tourists. They have since done away with those designations and tourists can stay anywhere they like.

Read our blog post on how to decide where to stay in Jamaica for a description of the various tourist regions on the island.

Which property to choose for your stay in Jamaica?

Even though vaccination programs are being rolled out around the world, safety is important.

Stay at a property that is licensed by the Tourist Board and certified COVID-resilient by Jamaica’s Tourism Development Product (TPDCO). This ensures that the property meets the standards for health and safety and has proper protocols in place to reduce the risk of spread of COVID-19. Be sure to ask about their COVID-19 plan.

Pick a villa or resort that is loaded with amenities so that if the rules change and you are required to stay on property, you won’t be bored and you can spend more of your vacation relaxing, unwinding, and getting to know your travel partners better without worrying about contracting COVID-19 during an off-site excursion.

If you are traveling as a group, consider a stay at a villa, such as Mais Oui Villa in Discovery Bay, a much better option than a resort to socially-distance from strangers.

Which attractions are open in Jamaica?

The Tourist Board keeps a list of attractions that are open and are certified COVID-resilient. Realize that this list can change at any time.

Check the list to see the certified COVID-resilient attractions. Here are two to get you started.

If Coronavirus is active, events might become canceled

Take note:  Most Jamaican events’ calendars are woefully inaccurate. This is even more true as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many popular websites still list events that have long been abandoned or happened in the distant past. Outdated websites and inactive Facebook pages are not uncommon.

DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, MOST EVENTS HAVE EITHER BEEN CANCELLED OR POSTPONED. PLEASE CHECK WITH THE EVENT ORGANIZERS  DIRECTLY TO DETERMINE THE STATUS.

Typical Annual Events in Jamaica in October – that hopefully will come back in some way in the future

Until the COVID-19 pandemic is behind us, events that cause groups of people to gather will have to be curtailed.  These events are not slated to happen for 2021 and even if they return, they will most likely look very different from before.
