The first of January without fireworks

Not everyone in America celebrates the New Year, and even those who celebrate often go to bed forty minutes after the countdown in Times Square. This is understandable: the children have already received their gifts from their parents and Santa a week ago on Christmas, and adults simply do not attach importance to the change of numbers and update the calendar in the kitchen. In addition, if 01/01 did not fall on a day off, everyone needs to go to work in the morning.
How so?
It is hard to imagine that it is possible to enter the first of January without fireworks, salads and tangerines, and even get enough sleep! The fact is that Americans have their own set of “main” holidays of the year, and it differs from what we are used to.

Christmas

The most family-friendly, warm and delicious holiday is, of course, Christmas, which is celebrated in the USA from 24 to 25 December.
December 24 – Christmas Eve, on this day, many people move between cities and even states in order to find themselves with all their relatives at a huge table in the evening, bursting with obligatory Christmas Dinner turkey with cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie and Christmas pudding. In terms of mood, this day is somewhat similar to December 31: everyone manages to buy the forgotten little things at the last moment, spend the whole day in the kitchen, and in the evening, during family conversations, they eat only a tenth of what was cooked. Even this evening, gifts for little family members are hidden under the Christmas tree, and adults either simply exchange presents or play them in Pass or Grab or White Elephant.
December 25 – Christmas Day, similar to January 1: the celebration continues, some of the guests are going back home and taking with them part of what they have prepared the day before, some stay longer, and some rush to the other half of the family in the neighboring state to spend part of Christmas with them.
For many Americans, Christmas is a favorite holiday: because of the opportunity to meet with a large family, bright childhood memories of gifts under the tree and cute decorations in the house and in the yard, which many appear there in November. Decorating a house for the holiday is a separate art form, and for some it is even a sport. In addition to spending an average of $250 each year on decorations alone, some Americans organize whole neighborhoods of competitions for the brightest garlands or the biggest deer on the roof. Preparations for the holidays in the US generally always take place in advance, so you can notice the Christmas theme on store shelves as early as the end of September. However, putting up a tree before Thanksgiving is almost bad manners.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is another family holiday. From the point of view of history, this day marks the first time that in 1621, the settlers shared a festive meal after the harvest with the Indians of one of the tribes then living on the American continent. Today, this holiday is an occasion to gather the whole family at a large table: Thanksgiving dinner is in no way inferior to its diversity and richness at Christmas. Following the tradition of their ancestors, on this day, Americans bake a turkey, cook pumpkin pie, a variety of casseroles and snacks. Thanksgiving traditions in each family may be slightly different: from the format of the feast and recipes, to those whom the family thanks on this day.
Thanksgiving does not have an exact date, it is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, after which 4 whole days become holidays. Why 4? Thanksgiving is followed each year by the craziest Friday of the year, Black Friday. It is she who is considered the starting point of the annual shopping before Christmas. This is not only a day of huge discounts and frantic queues, but also a day off – yes, the US government has allocated a special day for people to move away from the Thanksgiving feast and start buying gifts for loved ones.
If there are family feasts for Christmas and Thanksgiving that are cozy and warm, then there must be a holiday for fun with friends?

Halloween

Familiar to many, the carnival of ghosts, vampires and werewolves is the most expensive holiday in the United States. Americans are ready to shell out $9 billion for sweets, costumes and decorations.
Every year, children look forward to October 31st to dress up as everyone they can imagine and go to the neighbors for candy. The tradition of Trick-or-Treat affects not only families with kids, but entire neighborhoods and cities: people like to give out candy, decorate the house and yard, there are many contests related to Halloween. And if everything is clear with competitions for the best costume or for the most realistic skeletons on the lawn, then the competition “Who will collect / eat the most candies this night” can be both funny and somewhat scary, just in the spirit of the holiday.
Speaking of Trick-or-Treating, it is important to understand how much sweets are in question: on average, children collect from 1.5 to 5 kilograms per evening, and a family participating in the distribution of sweets usually spends from $ 25 to $ 100 on them. Naturally, Halloween leads in terms of the number of sweets eaten during the holiday. Despite the candy madness, everyone should feel the atmosphere of this holiday at least once as a child. It’s very cool to go from house to house, smile at your neighbors, marvel at the incredible costumes and really scary decorations, and then come home with a bag of chocolates that will last you until Easter.

Easter

Easter is the second favorite holiday for American children after Halloween. In addition to the tradition of painting eggs, attending church and getting together with the family, there is also a “children’s” option. While the children do not yet delve into the history of the holiday, the most interesting and long-awaited event for them is the search for painted eggs that the Easter Bunny hid. Early in the morning or the day before, parents hide colorful eggs all over the house or even in the yard, and when the children wake up, they have a whole adventure. By the way, eggs are not always chicken, often they are sweets and chocolates like Kinder Surprise. So, Easter takes an honorable second place in terms of the number of sweets eaten.
Each of these holidays: Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween and Easter – will give you warm memories and a real American Experience, because traditions, cultural and family – this is America.
