What Does Isabella Mean?

Isabella is a Latinized version of Elisheba and Jezebel. Both names have different meanings.

Elisheba means “God is my oath” in Hebrew. On the other hand, Jezebel is an Anglicized version of the Hebrew Īzeḇel, which loosely means “Where is the Prince?”

What Is the Origin of the Name Isabella?

Isabella has roots in the Biblical names Elisheba and Jezebel. However, both Elisheba and Jezebel played very different roles.

According to the Hebrew Bible, Elisheba was Moses’ sister-in-law. She was married to the prophet Aron. Her name comes from the Book of Exodus, where she’s a member of the Tribe of Judah (1).

If you break down Elisheba to its roots, you’ll find “Eli,” or “my God,” and “sheba,” or “oath. Coincidentally, this is also where we get the name Elizabeth.

Jezebel has a different origin story. According to the Hebrew Bible, she was the wife of Ahab, the famed Kind of Israel. In the Book of Revelations, Jezebel becomes a symbol of false prophets.

Over time, these Biblical names made their way through Europe, evolving as they went. Isabeth and Isabelle were other common derivatives.

How Popular Is the Name Isabella?

Isabella first started gaining popularity in England in the 13th century. From there, it ultimately made its way across the Atlantic. Records show it in 420th place in 1920, but it plummeted by the late 1940s, coming in at 996th place.

Isabella didn’t break 1,000th place again until 1990 when it started a rapid increase in popularity. In 2019, Isabella was the 5th most popular name in the United States. Currently, it holds 7th place (2).

How Do I Pronounce Isabella?

The proper pronunciation of Isabella is I-zuh-beh-luh.

Spanish and Italian variation of Elizabeth, Hebrew

“pledged to God”

Isabella Origin and Meaning

The name Isabella is girl’s name of Hebrew, Spanish, Italian origin meaning “pledged to God”.

Isabella is the Latinate form of Isabel, a variation of Elizabeth which originally derived from the Hebrew name Elisheba. Variations Isabelle and Isabel are also popular, with the Scottish spelling Isobel another possibility. Newer alternatives include Sabella and Isabetta.

Isabella is a major superstar among popular girls’ names. Isabella was the top girls’ name in the US for two years running- from 2009 to 2010—due at least in part to the ‘Twilight‘ effect and lead character Isabella ‘Bella’ Swan.

Isabella has incredible cross-cultural appeal, feeling both modern and traditional, and is popular among parents ranging from Anglophile to Hispanic, and more feminine and romantic than Isabel. An amazing success story for a name that wasn’t even in the Top 1000 in the 1980’s.

Part of the reason Isabella is so successful is that it appeals in a wide variety of ways to a large number of parents. It’s feminine but also classic, has a long history as a royal and classic Spanish name for girls yet is comfortable on the international stage. Some parents choose it to get to the short form Bella, while others prefer to use the irreverent Izzy or Issy, while still others insist on using it in its full four-syllable glory.

Isabella is familiar through various European queens, and was used by Shakespeare in Measure for Measure.

Isabella – table-technical (often used for landscaping) grape variety, late ripening. The leaves are medium or large, three-lobed, dark green, greenish-white below, often gray from dense felt pubescence. Petiole notch open, vaulted, with a sharp bottom. The flower is bisexual. Clusters are medium, weighing 140 g, almost cylindrical, sometimes cylindrical-conical, with small wings, medium dense, sometimes loose. The berries are medium, round or oval, black, with a bluish tinge, covered with an abundant wax coating. Sugar content 16-18%, acidity 6-7 g/l. The skin is thick, durable. The pulp is slimy, with a strongly pronounced strawberry aroma. The period from the beginning of bud break to the full ripening of berries is 150-180 days at a sum of active temperatures of 3100°C. Ripening of shoots is average. Bushes vigorous. Productivity is 60-75 q/ha. Isabella is resistant to fungal diseases and phylloxera. The grape variety is characterized by high winter hardiness, which in most cases allows it to be cultivated as a non-covering variety. Fertile low-calcareous soils are most favorable for Isabella. It tolerates high humidity well. Worse – drought (the growth force of the bush sharply decreases and leaf fall can be observed). The Isabella grape variety grows well and bears fruit in a wide variety of climatic zones. However, it belongs to varieties of the late ripening period, therefore, due to the frequent underripening of the crop in northern viticulture, it is not always advisable to use the variety. When cultivating a variety, it is necessary to ensure that there is no strong thickening of the shoots, because favorable conditions are created for mildew, uneven ripening of berries, a decrease in sugar accumulation and a deterioration in the quality of the crop. Isabella gives fruitful shoots from old wood and from replacement buds, which allows you to get a crop even if the main ones freeze. A relatively moderate load and highlighting of the bunches (leaf thinning) allow you to get a better harvest. The old grape variety (18th century), in its homeland in the USA, even in those areas where V. labrusca hybrids (Great Lakes, New York) are predominantly grown, has long been supplanted by other hybrids. It is used for fresh consumption and the preparation of ordinary wines.
