- Wilderness Beach
Once upon a time the east coast of South Africa between Mossel Bay (north of Cape Town) and Port Elizabeth was filled with forests of huge trees, where exotic birds sung alluring songs and strange little creatures lived in the shadows.
Wilderness is one of the last places to still experience these coastal forests, combined with spectacular coastlines and huge beaches that seem to stretch on to forever and back.
The strange little creatures are still around too and occasionally popping into restaurants – read on for more…
The Beach near Inn2Wilderness
The Beaches
The most spectacular beach is the one near the Inn2Wilderness Guest House where we normally stay. It’s a bit of a hike down the hillside to get there but it is worth the effort….the beach is spectacular!
You stand upon this huge expanse of powdery soft sand with soaring cliffs of verdant green vegetation behind you and crashing waves before you.
Above it all you’ll see eagles soaring and friendly dolphins often come close to shore to join in the fun.
There aren’t any lifeguards so don’t go in too deep as the rip-tide can be strong.
If you’re travelling with young children then the main beach is a better option.
To get there walk through the underpass that leads from just in front of the Girls Restaurant in the town centre.
It’s a huge beach so you’ll always have more than enough space for your beach towels and umbrella. Try to find a spot near the little river that flows into the beach and provides hours of fun for children.
Where to Stay
For total luxury the Xanadu Guest Villa is fabulous. Its beach location is out of this world and everything else is pretty much perfect too.
If you’d prefer something less expensive then the excellent Inn2Wilderness is a great option and it is right down the road from the most stunning of all Wilderness beaches that I mentioned earlier.
Where to Eat
Genet at The Girls
The Girls is top of my list – the food is always excellent and I love the little Cape Genet who occasionally visits.
Avoid Salinas Beach Restaurant.
What to Do
On the way to the waterfall pool
There is so much to do here it is hard
to decide where to begin. Of course you’ll want to go to the beach,
which I’ve already spoken about – once you are done with the beach try the following:
Head to Dolphin Point for a view you’ll
never forget. A view of towering cliffs, tumbling down
to a river that flows into an ocean where whales and dolphins play.
There are also a few good beaches in the river mouth and a spectacular railway bridge above.
Hire a canoe (your hotel or guest house
will be able to help you with this) and paddle up the Touws River –
it takes around an hour until you reach the second part of the
Half-Collared Kingfisher trail that leads to the rock pools.
Leave
the canoe and walk another forty minutes, mostly along a boardwalk,
to get there.
Rock pools in the midst of lush
forests more your thing? Then you’ll love the pool at the end of the Brown-Hooded
Kingfisher Trail.
Splash about in waters of invigorating
freshness while a towering waterfall cascades down from
jungle covered cliffs.
Spectacular birds and butterflies flash
rainbow colours and tiny frogs have as much fun as you showing off
their jumping and swimming skills…unforgettable.

Vacationers have spoiled everything there. Just mountains of rubbish. Lots of drunks. And rocks fall off the cliff. Dangerous place to stay.

When we went to this beach, we were charged with beautiful photos from social networks and exclamations that the pine tree is just something unearthly, beautiful and unusual. The road to get there is not wow, but we managed. But was it worth it? In my opinion, not at all. Yes, we were after the storm, but we didn’t see anything super-wow there. The usual narrow coastline near the cliff. By the way, pebbles in the lung can fly to someone on the head. The stairs leading down to the beach are rusty.

July 2021 • Family vacation
apparently they succeed) well, 1% are not healthy people in the head ….
Just returned from there.
Getting there on foot. .. In the heat… Unpleasant pleasure… Even by car, like us, there is very little good. The dirt slope is terrible. The climb is even worse and this is in dry weather.
Even if you get there by car. You still have to walk 600 meters. And the worst thing is that these 600-1500 meters will return back uphill in the heat…
FOR WHAT? there is nothing remarkable there. A narrow strip of pebbly beach and a chance to get hit on the head by a broken stone. Clean sea? Well, right now … If it’s a storm, like today, the sea is dirty brown, you won’t even be able to sunbathe because the waves reach the rocks.
Take water and a snack with you. There is no place to buy it in the area. If you’re on foot, leave the water on the way back…
IMHO. Don’t get fooled by the locals. This is a wild terrible beach, without any infrastructure, with a terrible dilapidated descent. THERE IS NOTHING THAT WILL BE HARD TO GET TO IT. Tripadvisor checks reviews.

Not impressed.
July 2021 • For two
My wife and I are not spoiled by comfort tourists, we love extreme sports and wild beaches. We rest in Gelendzhik for the 7th time. We decided to go to Sosnovka Beach. What can I say … I expected more, to drag along the slope ~ 1km and it’s useless … the people of the sea, children, huge boulders, stones in the water are very slippery, shallow. The sea is like a sea. On a thin cape, we got more impressions. Road back up the hill. The people are boorish, that on the stairs, that on the path, no one or anyone is allowed to pass. Rarely do you meet someone who understands. There is no connection, you can call a taxi. Plus one. The dolphins swam.

Nice view! Clean sea! I definitely recommend visiting, despite the rather difficult path, especially back (wear comfortable shoes, not slates). The beach is a large pebble, it is better to have special shoes for swimming.

It can be difficult to get there and then back. The beach itself is in large Pebbles, for some it may be a repulsive factor. But it is very beautiful there and there is something to see

I have not seen such beaches for a long time. Of course, it’s far from the parking lot to go to it, especially back, but it’s worth it. And it is very close to the city.

Sosnovka Beach
July 2020 • Traveling alone
Sosnovka Beach is Gelendzhik’s most remote and inaccessible beach. The beach is wild, so you should not expect any infrastructure. It is located not far from the Pine Gap SNT, after which the off-road path follows for about half an hour.

Sosnovka
July 2020
07/25/20, decided to visit the “significant place” in Gelendzhik..
, I love wild beaches, beaches
Before that, along and across the path from the “Mayak” (descent next to the “Shater” restaurant) and along the shore beyond the treatment facilities..
“Sosnovka” has unambiguously the best and relatively safe descent to the sea.
Beach of large round stones, a lot of people (for me “not ice”)
It takes a long time to get there, so it’s better by car.
