  • Gilligan’s Island & Southern Gems

We took this tour on our honeymoon and it was just fantastic! I can’t rave about it enough. Gilligans Island itself is to die for, and we really felt like we had our own private slice of paradise all to ourselves. Ashley is a great tour guide who has really thought of absolutely everything. Even the lunch she prepared for us was so delicious. It was a wonderful way to see more cities on the island in a short amount of time. From Gilligans to Yauco, it was a delight. I would recommend this to just about anyone!!

  • Mata La Gata & BioBay Experience

This tour was definitely the highlight of our week long trip to Puerto Rico! It really allowed us to explore and appreciate Puerto Rico for all that it is beyond San Juan. You see such amazing views on the way to the island as well as beautiful views from the island itself. Snorkeling at the island was amazing, we truly never wanted to leave the water. Victor was the best tour guide we could have asked for! He was extremely knowledgeable, funny, and down to earth. He truly made this a great experience.

  • AfroBorinken Grassroots

This is one of the most interesting tours I’ve ever been on. It was really immersive and informative. Ashley clearly has a wealth of knowledge and deep ties to the community. Every part of the tour is meticulously planned and makes for a well-rounded experience. The views along the tour were insanely gorgeous. It was such a fun time and we met some incredible locals along the way as well. Would highly recommend this experience.

90,000 Career in Australia and Puerto Rico, adventures in the NBA and a favorite combination in Samara. First interview of James Ennis in Russia | VTB United League | VTB United League

The arrival of James Ennis , ex-NBA player, to Samara this summer is one of the main events in the VTB United League. The experienced American forward, who played with Dwyane Wade, Vince Carter, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, James Harden and Nikola Jokic, brought the flavor of the best league in the world to the game of the newcomer of the Samara League and became one of the leaders of the team of Sergei Bazarevich. nine0005

Ennis spoke about his career in Australia and Puerto Rico, NBA rollercoaster, communication with Sergei Bazarevich in an interview to the League website.

James, you can already tell that you’ve had a great basketball career. And it began right after college in an unusual place – in Australia. Tell us how you ended up there and what is your main conclusion about Australian basketball?
– Immediately after college, I went to play in Australia because Miami, who owned the rights to me after the 2013 draft, wanted me to play in the Development League. But I, of course, did not want this, since there was no money there, and I needed to help my family financially. That is why I decided to play abroad. Although I didn’t know anything about Australia at all. My agent once told me about this country, and we liked this option. My main conclusion about Australian basketball is that it helped me become a real professional. Playing away from home, I’ve been really lucky to have good teammates and I’ve matured quite quickly in that environment. nine0005

What about your second professional team, the Puerto Rican Pirates?
— Yes, I played in this team right after Australia. It was the first time I ever came to Puerto Rico. I really liked it there. There were a lot of former NBA players in that league, as well as guys that I played against in college until recently. We were not forced to train much. We just went to the games and ran for fun. It was a good experience, I really enjoyed Puerto Rican basketball. nine0005

Then came a long spell in the NBA. You got there through the Summer League. I played a little in the associations, then I was decommissioned into the development league. Then he again got into the NBA, where he played a total of 8 seasons. What is the secret to your basketball longevity?
— My NBA career has been a real adventure. NBA, development league, trades – not everyone will be able to cope with this and stay afloat. It’s good that all this happened to me in my youth. Recalling all these adventures, I can say that my young age helped me a lot. I quickly adapted to the constant movement. He knew how to ignore adversity, knew how to quickly recover from defeats and not reproach himself too much for failures. It was also important to maintain Olympian calm and keep the golden mean in everything. I also really appreciated that I got into the NBA at all and have the opportunity to provide for my family. And finally, the ability to work hard helped me to spend so many fruitful seasons in the NBA – the league of my dreams. nine0005

This season in Samara you play under the guidance of one of the best basketball players in the history of Russian basketball — Sergey Bazarevich. If you haven’t Googled it yet, then you need to know that back in the mid-90s, Sergey Valeryanovich was one of the best, as they would say now, combo guards in world basketball. But, perhaps, you already know a lot about what kind of basketball coach Sergey Bazarevich is?
— Definitely, this season I play under the guidance of one of the best players in the history of Russian basketball. I know he was very cool on the court. That he’s in the middle of 90’s played in the NBA for Atlanta, says a lot. And, of course, he is a great coach. I would call him a coach for the players. And this is very important. He always wants to win and charges us with the right attitude both for games and for the training process. I definitely like to play under the guidance of coach Sergei Bazarevich.

The next logical question: how do you think you yourself fit into the philosophy of coach Bazarevich? Let’s complicate this question a little. Could you give us a little scouting for James Ennis, forward of the Samara basketball club? nine0010 – First of all, I’m a jumper: I can remove a dollar bill from the top of the shield and, without landing, leave change there. I am a player who energizes my teammates with my energy. I also play well in defense, I can keep from the first to the fourth “numbers” of the opposing team. Naturally, I can score. To some extent, still adapting to the new team. But that’s great, because I love any basketball challenge.

Can you tell us what is your favorite combination in positional attack, which coach Sergey Bazarevich assigns for you in Samara? nine0010 – We play my favorite combination of coach Bazarevich in the “positional” from the “4-down” formation. I usually get the ball down, as close to the hoop as possible. And from this position I can beat one on one, and also throw it to the perimeter to one of the snipers who are waiting for the transfer. In my opinion, this is one of our best combinations this season.

Gran Canaria 2013. January 4-8. Adventure along the way. Puerto Rico, Puerto Mogan, Anfi.: heart_beater — LiveJournal

It’s time to tell a little more about the January trip. Already almost traditional, the trip to the Canary Islands in January did not aim to see many sights. Perhaps its saturation was less than the Icelandic times two or three. We were very tired during the Icelandic trip, but the impressions overwhelm us so far. Here the goal was different – to rest and at least for two weeks interrupt the unloved Petersburg winter. The Canaries have the main thing that we miss the most at this time. The sun is there! Warm, very summer, wonderful sun, the sight of which in our winter you begin to forget a little. Feeling his warmth, in the first days you want to smile all the time. Almost immediately it begins to seem that snowdrifts and frosts have remained somewhere only in a dream. And, honestly, it’s worth the money spent and the difficulties along the way! nine0002

However, don’t think that there will be nothing else in this report except photos of sand, sea and sun 🙂 Of course, lying on the beach for two weeks is not for us at all. And we did see something. Or rather, we saw almost everything we wanted on this island 🙂

First, as usual, maps. Just in case, I remind you where the Canary Islands are 🙂

And here is how the island of Gran Canaria is located relative to others:0002 On this map, the red arrow indicates the place where we lived. We are in the Canaries for the third time, so I decided to also mark our previous places:

Green arrow – Lanzarote island. We were there on January 4-8, 2010, when Matvey was minus six months 🙂 You can read about this trip here.
Blue arrow – Tenerife island, January 4-11, 2011. Matvey was plus six months old 🙂 You can also read about this.

And finally, the third map shows our movements around the island, which will be discussed in this post. nine0005

A – Gran Canaria Airport.
B – Puerto Rico. We lived in this town.
C – Puerto Mogan.
D – Anfi.

We traveled to Gran Canaria for three days. On the first day, January 4, we left. As usual, we crossed the border. We stopped at the Jumbo Center in Helsinki. Overnight at the hotel. On January 5 we had a plane to Berlin. As usual, I drove Matvey, Masha and things to the airport and went to park the car. And here a shock awaited me: there were no parking spaces near the airport! Generally! All places were occupied by Russian cars, the owners of which, like us, flew somewhere for the holidays. There was less and less time left before the plane, and I began to get quite nervous. As a result, I found a place about three kilometers from the terminal. It was a forest street in some settlement. I didn’t see any signs forbidding parking. Other cars were parked, so without much thought, I decided to leave the car here. During the trip, I was worried about her, but in the end everything turned out well. The battery was dead in the car, but I solved this problem, since I had a spare one. I also had to make a three-kilometer run in the cold in summer clothes. But my body, accustomed to jogging, reacted normally to this too 🙂

2.

We also had a little adventure in Berlin. The hotel was not very far from the airport, but it took a few bus stops to get there. We found the right bus, but we didn’t know exactly where to get off. I tried to ask the driver, but he didn’t know this hotel or this street. In the end, we left almost at random, when the bus, according to our estimates, traveled the required distance 🙂 The situation was aggravated by the fact that we had about this many things:

3.

In addition, it was cloudy, and the GPS did not want to catch satellites. For about five minutes we tried to figure out where we were. And then the GPS finally started working, and it turned out that the hotel was only 400 meters away and, in general, we got off at the right stop! We had the evening, but we were too lazy to go to the center. We walked around the hotel. Fortunately, there is a river, a park with a castle and a playground. And the temperature of +7 seemed to us almost summer.

The next morning I had to get up very early – I think at 4 am local time. At 6:35 there was already a plane. Here we ordered a taxi. The taxi driver turned out to be Russian 🙂 Dawn met us already in the air. nine0005

We arrived in Gran Canaria when it was still late in the morning. We also took a taxi to the hotel. As you can see from the map, we had to go around the Postrov. But the roads are good, the six-lane freeway with a limit of 120 ends just in Puerto Rico. We arrived in half an hour. The price of a taxi unpleasantly surprised – 68 euros. If they knew, they would take the bus. I did not want to take a car right at the airport because I decided that a new country, a new car and getting up at 4 in the morning is too much for me. Maybe in vain. Then it turned out that for some reason, renting a car in Puerto Rico is much more expensive than if it was done in advance from aggregators. nine0005

One way or another, but the taxi took us to our apartments – Aquasol apartements, where we spent 12 nights. Their main advantage is a very attractive price / quality ratio. For about 30 euros per day, we had an almost full-fledged one-room apartment. There was even a view of the sea, although most of it was blocked by the restaurant. There was a pool. True, the water in it is incredibly cold – 15 degrees, no more. Apparently, it comes from somewhere underground, otherwise it is difficult to explain why the water temperature is so much lower than the air temperature. You could sit on the balcony in the evenings and access the Internet via free Wi-Fi and read about the snows of your homeland, which seemed unreal to us in those days 🙂 Well, the disadvantage of these apartments is that they are located on a high mountain, and no transport goes to them. Either by taxi or by foot. However, this didn’t bother us much. In recent days, I even arranged jogging. I got up before sunrise, ran to the sea in swimming trunks, swam, and – uphill. nine0005

When Matvey saw the pool, he immediately decided to swim. Having received 15 degrees instead of the usual 36 degrees, he didn’t try to go into it anymore 🙂 Well, I occasionally plunged anyway.

We ate, unpacked things, had a little rest and went for the first walk around the town. To get to the center and to the sea, it was necessary to go down for a long time.

4.

It was nice to look at Masha. She smiled all the time 🙂 And I probably did too. After all, there are almost two weeks of sea and sun ahead! We ate ice cream, Matvey ran to explore the sand. nine0005

5.

Well, we take turns at sea!

6.

There were many sand buildings on the beach. How I loved this activity as a child!

7.

Matvey did not bathe, he considered the water too cold. Although, by our standards, it was quite warm, 19-20 degrees.

8.

The next day we decided to take a boat trip to the nearby Anfi beach. We go down again. This door caught my attention. I have seen this more than once in the southern countries. A fence that I could just step over, and it has a full-fledged door that is locked with locks. nine0005

9.

We are waiting for the boat, admiring the city. Boats of two competing companies depart from opposite ends of the city. We chose the one that departed earlier. Puerto Rico in architectural terms, of course, is so-so. And the nature here, to be honest, is almost none. Bare rocks. But this is no accident. There is almost no rainfall in this part of the island, and that’s why I chose this city 🙂 And also because it is “out of the way”. We needed the sun, and it was planned to drive for beautiful views. The architecture here is extremely functional. Resort town, all windows overlook the sea. Masha and I once thought that when we retired, we would buy a house in the Canary Islands and live here in the winter. But I do not know. I think living here all winter would be boring. nine0005

10.

In the meantime, it’s time for the boat. Boats run from Puerto Rico to Anfi and Puerto Mogan. First we visited Anfi.

11.

It doesn’t take long to swim. The pleasure costs 3 euros per person. On the last day, we took a walk along the shore.

12.

A new city is being built here. You can see how it is set up. First, ledges are made on the rock, and then “honeycombs” of hotels are placed on them.

13.

And this is the housing of the locals. It immediately catches the eye that it goes to the north side. The sun must have hit the locals just as much as the rains for us 🙂
And on the right you can see a piece of the Anfi complex. To many, it seems gloomy, but I even liked it – after all, some kind of variety.

14.

Almost all women, when talking about this place in their report, mention the island in the form of a heart, which the owner of the hotel gave to his beloved woman 🙂 You can see the heart only by going up to the upper floors of the hotel. Okay, so be it, here it is 🙂

15.

Perhaps, in the rating of beaches that I have visited, Anfi is still in the lead. What should be the ideal beach? Fenced bay. Warm sea. Smooth (but not too) entry into the water. No entry fee. Lack of road and restaurants nearby (otherwise it will be too noisy and dirty). Of course, no garbage. And, of course, sand… I specially photographed it in macro mode. Look how perfect the structure of the sand is! All grains of sand are the same size, and only slightly different in color! I have never seen anything like this before on any beach! nine0005

16.

I liked this place so much that on the last day before plunging into winter, we returned here again. I very rarely do this – after all, there are so many wonderful places in the world where I have not been, and life is short! But some places still want to go back!

17.

On our first visit there was still a Christmas tree. They look very strange in this climate.

18.

The next day we went the other way – to Puerto Mogan. Many praise this city, but it seemed to me that there is almost nothing special there, except for the port, which will be discussed below. We got there by bus. It turned out to be cheap and quite convenient. Buses run quite often. I liked the beach in Puerto Mogan less. There are many restaurants nearby, so there is a lot of rubbish on the sand. And the sand itself is not as perfect as in Anfi. And the weather by local standards was “bad”: there were rather dense cirrus clouds in the sky, the sun did not shine much 🙂 But still we swam here, buried Matvey in the sand,

19.

and Matvey buried a book “about Tyukhov” in the sand 🙂

20.

But the part of the city near the port did not leave indifferent even my man’s heart 🙂

21.

23.

Are there gifts hanging on trees? 🙂

24.

In the port, as usual, the embankment

25.

and the forest of yachts

26.

We sailed back for a change. The deserted shores of this part of the island floated by. nine0005

27.

Most often they were built up with rather monotonous hotels in the style of “honeycomb – anthill” 🙂

28.

But the sunset was that evening … Tropical sunsets are a special article. After all, it rarely happens with us that there are a lot of cirrus clouds in the sky, and there are absolutely no middle and lower ones that cover them. Either there is everything, or none. But cirrus clouds at sunset are the most beautiful. They are high, and the sun illuminates them even when twilight is already gathering below. On previous trips, I also shot them, but over the years I learned something, and this time it turned out like this:

29.

These are real colors, I barely changed the white balance!

30.

The light changed before our very eyes. At this latitude, a sunny day gives way to complete darkness in about twenty minutes.
