blissful experience, well-run operation

Oct 2022 • Friends

This is one of my favorite experiences ever. Apparently conditions can vary but when we went (mid-October) it was exceptional. Have to wonder whether these conditions will persist indefinitely given climate change, but for now, this is blissful. There are several companies, encountered others—EcoAction seemed very tightly organized in in comparison, and did a good though quick orientation, so our group was able to manage better than some other groups seemed to. It’s 1.2 miles each way—kayaking neophytes should be prepared that it’s more than zero work, though the way back, with the current, is almost like a lazy river when not encountering other groups going the other way. Despite other groups and tree snags, it is incredibly peaceful and lovely. Things I’m glad we knew ahead: wear reef shoes or shoes that can be immersed, and shorts or swim gear—you wade up to your thighs to the kayak and back. Put phone and wallet in waterproof pouch or leave behind. Things I wish we’d known ahead: Person who reserved must bring ID. There are pointed tree snags along the way and it’s easy to run into them since it’s dark—have awareness and go slow if you’re not super skilled so you can adjust. If you book the early tour (6:45), it may be hard to find a place to eat after—plan to grab food before or nearby right after. Altogether—fantastic experience, could have stayed out there forever!

Mesmerizing

Jun 2022 • Friends

Such an amazing night witnessing this beautiful natural phenomenon. If you forget all about the heavily filtered pictures you see online, you’ll be mesmerized! Kayaking in the night was also an interesting experience! Thank you to Misael who was so knowledgeable and helpful.

Great experience if your expectations are realistic

May 2022

The key to enjoying Laguna Grande is having realistic expectations. Forget those heavily filtered IG pictures, the reality is that the glowing effect produced by the microscopic organisms in the bay is produced as a reaction to movement in the water. Only then do they activate their glowing defense mechanism. So don’t expect you’ll suddenly reach a bay that glows like a glowstick on a rave. You’ll be able to see the glowing effect when you move the water with your hand and while rowing. Its a very interesting natural phenomenon that is worth experiencing – but again – you need to have realistic expectations.

To get to the bay, you’ll have to row for about 20-30 minutes through mangroves. Honestly, I found this experience alone to be worth the tour. I had never kayaked at night, and going through the dark, narrow channel is a very surreal, even creepy, experience.

As for crowds…yes, there is a lot of people. There are several outfitters, and while you go through the narrow channel, you’ll sometimes have a group coming the other way. There are only a handful of bio-bays in the world, and this one might be the most accessible one, so of course you won’t be alone.

Wonderful

Apr 2022 • Family

Breathtaking to kayak between the mangroves on both sides . It’s a must tour to take in Puerto Rico. The company provided great service and were very helpful for inexperienced kayakers. Pablo , Gabriel and Angel are just amazing and they entertained us throughout the tour . Highly recommended 👍

So dumb. Stupidest activity on the island by far. Total waste of money.

Mar 2022 • Family

Holy cow this was dumb. Take all of the images you have in your mind of what a bioluminescent bay will look like and kiss them goodbye. This is water with 4-6 sparkles that appear when you wave your hand back and forth. You have to put a tarp over your head and look straight down at where your hand is moving the water. Hardly a wondrous nature experience. It’s so dumb it’s honestly awkward at the end and nobody really says anything, especially to the poor folks waiting at the kiosk to go on the next tour. We all just donate our money and move along.

Sadly the plankton is almost all gone.

Mar 2022

The high number of positive reviews are because this place
WAS great a few years ago. When we did the tour back then it was truly magical. But now the plankton has mostly died and the light pollution has increased to the point that they literally put a tarp over the heads of the group to try to give you a glimpse of the plankton (you had better be vaccinated as i cant think of a worse example of social distancing). even then, you really cant see anything. Read the recent reviews and you’ll see they are mostly negative. Why there is an occasional good one beats me. You aren’t going to see anything special.

Magical

Be prepared to kayak 30 minutes in and 30 minutes out. The tour guides are knowledgeable and eager to share their island! Long sleeves and clothes that can get wet are needed!

A waste of money

Mar 2022

I just just got back on Match 8. DO NOT GO TO THIS BAY. I haven’t been to the other areas that offer this “lighting”, but this is a scam. There are too many tour groups with too many kayaks per tour and when you have to pass another tour group in the narrow area, it’s chaos. Because you have novice kayakers who, and not really their fault, don’t have enough room to avoid you. Once you finally get past the narrow canal into the bay, there is a huge structure above the bay with all its lights on. I went specifically on March 2 because it was a NEW MOON. Meaning no light from the moon. It makes zero difference if you have lights beaming onto the bay. Yes. They break out tarps and try to make you think you see the bioluminescence…ya…kind of..sort of..not really. If you go into this thinking you want to do a night kayak? Maybe. ..but for the lights? They are taking your money at this bay. I realize this sounds cool, which is why I went during a new moon. It is not. It might be worth $20 a person just to night kayak…maybe…not $50-$70 a person. Absolutely no way.

Waste of time and money

Feb 2022 • Couples

Far too crowded. Too many tour operators. Too large groups. Too much noise. Too much light pollution. (And, given that the tour guides complain about the light pollution, how about starting to do something about it with their own gathering area—Kayak Village—with its glare bomb wall packs!) Covering boats with tarps to darken the area was sad.

Puerto Rico and the Fajardo area needs to do much more to protect its resources. Limiting use in some areas is a necessity.

Totally misrepresented. Very underwhelming. Just advertise it as a night kayak trip.
