This is a beautiful place!

This Bahia is one of few in the world. Is better to be prepared and get the boat arrangements confirmed before too late in the evening to secure a seat. Some people do Kayaking. I have not done that yet.

The ride on the boat was really nice. The stars looked beautiful! When it was tiime to see the glowing it was disappointing. The young guy that went in the water moved around and we saw some glowing around him. The boat people brought two buckets with water, when you put your hand in it and started to move the water, we were able to see some sparkles. We were not impressed with the experience.

Not even a memory of what it once was

I’ve been on this tour a couple of times, mostly when I was younger. Decided to go with some friends who had never it seen it, all in awe with my explanation of how wonderful and bright it was. Notice the use of “was”. I could not have been more disappointed when we got here. Vigorous swimming barely elicited any kind of luminic reaction. My friends were also understandably disappointed. We came on a new moon by the way, so spare me the whole “you surely went on the wrong day” excuse. It saddens my heart to find a once majestic natural attraction being reduced to what it is now. Will certainly not return for the time being (to the bay, the general area is great, the food, the ambiance, all spectacular).

I have taken the boat trips four times (in a 25 year span), back in the day it was really impressive, now looks like the microorganisms are dying 🙁 Still there are “some less known regions” close to the bay that you could appreciate this spectacle! I’m pretty sure that if you get a personalized boat trip and swim during the night (during New Moon) you will maximized the experience!

Bioluminiscent Bay by Kayak at night, La Parguera

We took a kayaking tour by Muelle Escondido ( Carmen’s She’ll Shop Staff). Our guide took us in a small boat to the mangrove and we kayaked for almost two hours. We were only two couples and it was awesome. Very affordable, personal tour with the option of swimming in the bay. We went to one of the remote locations of La Parguera and although it was cloudy and that makes it less dark, it was still awesome. We spent a lot of time kayaking, the guide took us to some locations that was very dark so it looked fantastic. One less in the bucket list. If you do swim during the winter take a towel or some jacket because the ride back to the shore is chilly.

I have gone to 2 out of 3 bioluminicent bodies in Puerto Rico and I have to say It was really rewarding to relive the moment. It is an amazing sight. I must recommend a Night full of stars rather than one that has moonlight to really appreciate the spectacle.

Nothing to see

Once the most impressive phosphorescent bay of PR, the phenomenom has almost completely gone now, even on a dark evening, due to intensive motor boat tours, environmental changes etc.
A 45min boat trip with Johnny’s boats at 9$ a person is not worth the trip.
It is more interesting to visit the bay and its mangrove islands during the day.

nice boat ride and the man that gets in the water and comes out like if he has lights in his body and we got to light up our hands they fill buckets with that water and let us put our hands in it i’ts really cool to see your hands light up like that the staff was very nice and answered all the questions asked we’re doing this again for sure it’s really worth it

Dying Bioluminescent Bay losing a World Attraction

Bioluminescen.

There are only 3 stable bioluminescent bays left in the world. They are all in Puerto Rico. The 2 in eastern Puerto Rico are being protected and managed. The one east of La Parguera is being destroyed by motor boats, swimmers, and pollution. The one near Parguera was once the best, but no more. Why would the people who earn their living on the bay wish to destroy it? Go figure. If you have a choice, visit the well-managed bays in eastern Puerto Rico. Do not support the poorly informed people who are destroying the one near La Parguera. Chose a moonless night to visit the bay. On a full moon you will not be able to see the bioluminescence. Do not go out alone in a small boat with strangers. Bad things have happen. There was once a bioluminescent bay west of La Parguera, but it was destroyed long ago. Anywhere in Puerto Rico wear suntan lotion in the day and bug repellant at night. Enjoy something most people will never see.

This is a fantastic full day gift experience in Puerto Rico that shows you two of the country’s most thrilling natural attractions. You’ll start at the El Yunque visitor centre, the gateway to the rainforest, which makes a great introduction to understanding the area and what makes it so special. From here, it’s a hike to the La Mina Falls, where you can cool off with a refreshing dip before you head to the Yocahú observation tower. The incredible photos you snap here of the rainforest canopy will be potentially frameworthy. Final stop in El Yunque is the La Coca Falls, known as the Fountain of Youth in the past – if you’re feeling tired, a splash here should sort you out!

Part two of your tour begins after a restaurant dinner (not included in tour price) at sunset, as you set off by kayak to explore the wonderful Fajardo Bay by night. The dark waters in this beautiful mangrove reserve are brightly illuminated by millions of tiny organisms that glow, so that as you paddle gently through you make fascinating patterns. Low-intensity navigation lights are provided so that you can see where you’re going without diluting the effect of this, one of nature’s most exhilarating performances.
