               La bandera, en el ms
alto de sus significados, es el smbolo de la nacionalidad y representacin
genuina de la patria. En el 1511, Espaa otorga a la Isla una bandera que estaba
basada en el escudo de  armas conferido por los Reyes. Esa bandera fue la ms
hermosa y antigua de toda Amrica y se descrba de la siguiente forma: “campo
rojo con una cruz blanca en el fondo de brazos iguales dos a dos en la mitad
inferior de la misma y en la mitad superior con campo o fondo verde las armas de
Puerto Rico, castillo a la derecha y len a la izquierda de la misma, en
representacin de Castilla y Len, el castillo y el len amarillo oro con fondo
verde… “

               El 22 de diciembre
de 1895 un  grupo de 59 puertorriqueos se reunieron en el “Chimney
Corner Hall” de la ciudad de Nueva York y organizaron la Seccin de Puerto Rico
del Partido Revolucionario Cubano. En esa asamblea se escogi la bandera que
sera el smbolo de la lucha por la independencia de la Isla de manos de 
Espaa. Segn las actas, la bandera “es de la misma forma de la cubana, con
la diferencia de haber invertido los colores.”

           Existen tres teoras
sobre el verdadero diseador de la bandera de Puerto Rico. Documentos revisados
sealan a Don Manuel Besosa como la persona quien la dise pues en una carta de
su hija aparece escrito lo siguiente: “Lo cierto es que mi padre me encarg
con varios das de antelacin a la fecha de la Juanta que cosiera con pedazos de
cinta de color blanco, rojo y azul que l mismo me trajo, una banderita como de
cinco franjas de rojo y  blanco alternados y un tringulo azul en un lado con
una estrella blanca de cinco puntas sobre el campo del tringulo. “

             La bandera de 1895 fue aprobada por
la Juanta Revolucionaria de Cuba Seccin de Puerto Rico con el siguiente
significado:

Significado Actual

            La bandera desde sus orgenes ha sido utilizada
como smbolo de diversos moviemientos polticos, como el Partido Unionista de
Puerto Rico y el Partido Nacionalista Puertorriqueo. Pero no es hasta el 24 de
julio de 1952 que la bandera es aprobada por la Legislatura y se establece su
significado oficialmente.

Historia y origen de la bandera de Puerto Rico

Existe mucha confusión sobre quién fue la persona que creó esta bandera, lo que sí se sabe es que a finales de la década del siglo XIX. Las personas que estaban residiendo en la ciudad de Nueva York , todos puertorriqueños, quisieron homenajear a su país con el diseño de una bandera.

 Finalmente, en una carta encontrada en 1923, se reconoce a Pachín Marín como el artífice y creador de esta bandera. Según su autor, esta bandera intentaba simbolizar el trato de hermanos y de lucha que había entre el pueblo cubano y el pueblo puertorriqueño, siempre hubo mucha relación entre estos dos pueblos, y que luchaban por la libertad de sus ciudadanos.

La bandera de Puerto Rico fue izada por primera vez en 1897. En esta época, Puerto Rico aún era colonia de España ,en el Caribe. Pasaron muchos años hasta que esta bandera se pudo izar con completa libertad, y no es hasta 1952 cuándo se adapta cómo bandera oficial. 

Actualmente, Puerto Rico tiene dos banderas oficiales la de EEUU y la de Puerto Rico. No pasa nada si se utiliza ambas o una independiente. 

Significado de la bandera de Puerto Rico

Existe un vacío legal sobre los colores de esta bandera, ya que en el documento oficial en el que que se describe cómo debe ser la bandera, no se especifica el color exacto que debe tener, sobre todo el azul. En algunas ocasiones, se utiliza un azul más oscuro, igual que en Estados Unidos, y otras veces un azul más claro o celeste. Aún así, los colores de la bandera tienen significados muy profundos también sus símbolos.

• Estrella: Expresa la libertad, y es que Puerto Rico es un estado libre asociado dentro de los Estados Unidos.  A veces esta estrella simboliza la soledad, y es que Puerto Rico es una isla única en el Caribe.
• Triángulo:  El triángulo, simboliza la independencia y el Estado republicano de Puerto Rico. También, especifica que tiene tres poderes independientes: Legislativo, ejecutivo y judicial. El azul del triángulo también significa el cielo y el mar, muy presente en este país.
