Municipality Barceloneta , on the island of Puerto Rico (international code: PR.BC), covers an area of ​​62 km² and has 22,322 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2006 ).

History

Barceloneta was founded on on July 2, 1881 by Don Bonosio Lenz Feliupe. Barceloneta was named after Barceloneta, the district of Barcelona where its founder was from.

Barceloneta was originally part of Manati. Due to its location on the Rio Grande de Manati, Barceloneta has experienced significant port activity. In addition to carrying salt and sugar from La Catalana (the first sugar factory on the island), the port received passengers: Don Bonosio’s son owned a ship connecting Barceloneta with New York and Barcelona.

• October 12, 1898 : US troops enter Barceloneta, where they meet with no resistance.
• June 14, 1971 , most of barrio de Florida Adentro separated from Barceloneta, forming the new municipality of Florida.

Barceloneta is known as La Ciudad de las Piñas , La Ciudad Industrial , El Pueblo de los Indios and El Pueblo de Sixto Escobar .

Geography

Barceloneta is located on the northern coast of the island. Neighboring municipalities: Arecibo to the west, Florida to the south, and Manati to the east.

The municipality is divided into four barrios (districts): Barceloneta Pueblo, Florida Afuera, Garrochales and Palmas Altas.

Economy

The Sugar Factory was for a long time the only industrial enterprise in Barceloneta. Today, no less than fourteen pharmaceutical factories operate in the city, making it the most important industrial complex in the world in this area. Pharmaceutical companies have settled in the city because of the quality of the groundwater. They are so pure that they do not require any processing to produce medicines.

Pineapple cultivation is the main agricultural activity of Barceloneta.
