The worlds of craft cocktails and beer thrive here, but they’re run through with island culture.

Stephanie Segarra

When you think of the bar scene Puerto Rico, you might assume it’s all thatched-roof beachfront bars slinging umbrella-topped mojitos and piña coladas. And while there are plenty of sand-in-your-toes spots to choose from, the island’s drinking scene is a lot more diverse than that, so ditch those images of Margaritaville dancing in your head. Bartenders, like the chefs who have turned the island into a bonafide dining destination, are embracing interesting and local ingredients. From elegant speakeasies serving inventive craft cocktails to beer beers with rotating local brews, there’s a bar in Puerto Rico to suit every taste, mood and price point.

    La PenúltimaArrow

    $$

La Penúltima perfectly balances hip, industrial-chic vibes with a cozy neighborhood atmosphere. It’s one of those rare bars that feels artsy and cool without being the slightest bit pretentious. Cocktails are simple and well-crafted—no foams or unnecessary flourishes here. We like the daiquiri and the Isla Borinquen Fizz, a creamy and effervescent blend of rum, gin, coconut, pineapple, and soda. There are also a handful of good local beers. All of it brings locals out in droves.

  • Saint Voodoo’s Mar AzulArrow

    $

Saint Voodoo’s brings a touch of New Orleans funk to the tiny island of Vieques with its colorful, tiki-inspired vibes. The ownership’s changed since the hurricane (it was formerly the beloved Al’s Mar Azul) but it still has the same relaxed, dive-bar feel and reliably epic sunset views from the upstairs deck. Leathery older regulars will tell you that these guys do the best Painkiller on the island, and they’re not wrong; the simple tiki cocktail, a blend of rum, coconut cream, and orange juice, is perfect in this setting. The piña coladas are great, too. This isn’t a hip, sceney cocktail bar, and that’s precisely why we like it.

  • Stephanie Segarra

    El BateyArrow

    $

Graffiti covers the walls of El Batey, a legendary little dive bar in Old San Juan. It’s dark, rough, and grimy—the floor is perpetually sticky with spilled drinks and the room smells musty—but there’s a vintage jukebox, a pool table, and a grungy charm that will make you want to stick around. Come when you need a break from fruity, umbrella-topped, tropical cocktails—or when you just want to rub elbows with locals and off-duty cruise-ship crews.

  • Karina Margary

    Jungle BirdArrow

    $$$

A cozy little tiki bar hidden on the edge of La Placita, Jungle Bird serves up fun tropical vibes; think, bamboo furniture, big leafy plants, sexy mood lighting, and gorgeous cocktails. But despite its playful name and vibes, you’ll find serious rum drinks with Caribbean ingredients like fresh coconut, pineapple, and sugarcane—no overly sweet, pre-made piña colada mixes here. The food comes from chef Paxx Caraballo Moll who has been picking up national accolades for work better than you can get at almost any other bar.

  • Courtesy El Bar Bero

    El Bar BeroArrow

    $$

A barbershop by day and a cocktail bar by night, El Bar Bero is bedecked in hair-themed paraphernalia: hanging light bulbs adorned with moustaches, antique barber shop chairs that double as bar stools, and so on. Don’t let the kitschy decor fool you: El Bar Bero’s cocktail game is serious. Masterful mixologists put their own creative stamp on the classics. Overwhelmed by choice? Order a classic like Bee’s Knees, a crowd-pleasing blend of gin, lavender honey, and lemon.

  • Stephanie Segarra

    Nono’sArrow

    $

You couldn’t miss Nono’s if you tried: just look for the buttercup-yellow colonial building on the corner, and for the guests spilling from its flung-open doors. Inside, you’ll find a casual, buzzy sports bar: football on TV, rowdy games of pool, and cold beer in every hand. A central location, ice-cold Medallas, and all-round good vibes make this an ideal spot to wind down after a long day of sightseeing.

  • Stephanie Segarra

    Taberna BoricuaArrow

    $$

Taberna Boricua is a hip neighborhood bar with a leafy beer garden and live acoustic bands every Friday and Saturday night. It gets crowded and buzzy on weekends but otherwise pretty mellow: exactly the kind of place you can kick back for a few hours. Taberna was the first beer garden to open in Puerto Rico, and it boasts one of the most extensive lists on the island: more than 200 craft beers. There’s a dizzying selection of local brews, too; ask your bartender to pick one, or, better yet, get him to custom-curate a flight.

  • Courtesy Rincon Beer Company

    Rincón Beer CompanyArrow

    $$

Rincón Beer Company is casual, bright, and lively, with lots of cool local art hanging on the walls, a hastily scribbled chalkboard menu, and casually dressed guests tossing back drinks and playing board games. This is a brewery so if you’re here, you’re drinking beer, and they have 16 on tap, the most from a microbrewery on the island, as well as a selection of bottles. On the weekends the space gets pretty rowdy when there’s live music and brunch.

    Bar La UnidadArrow

    $$$

At this elegant, dimly lit, Prohibition-inspired bar, exquisite artisanal cocktails rival those of any mainland American city. Expect refined touches on classics, like a piña colada with coconut water and cinnamon syrup, as well as inventive concoctions like the Cortadito: bourbon, espresso, and chocolate bitters topped with white chocolate shavings. There’s also an extensive wine and Champagne menu featuring some big-spender bubbles; this is that sort of place.

  • Courtesy La Taberna Lupulo

    La Taberna LúpuloArrow

    $$

La Taberna Lúpulo is a gorgeous Old San Juan tavern with soaring beamed ceilings, big oak doors flung open to the street, and a long wooden bar. When you think about drinks in Puerto Rico, you don’t immediately think beer bar, but from the moment you walk in, it’s clear that’s what this spot is about: Shelves of bottles line the walls, the bar boasts a whopping 50 taps, and there’s a huge chalkboard scribbled with the bartenders’ favorites.

  • Kai Beach Bar and RestaurantArrow

    $$

Strong cocktails, soft reggae, and sweeping ocean views—what more could you want? KKai sits on Playa Jobos in surfing hotspot Isabela in the northwest, so this is about as close to a toes-in-the-sand experience as it gets. The bar stocks 10 kinds of (mainly international) beer and with about the same number of cocktails on the menu—more, if you count the six different kinds of margaritas. Be warned: the cocktails taste tropical and sweet, but they’re potent. A couple of rum punches may just knock you out. But you can’t really go wrong with a cold rum punch, a plate of mofongo, and #nofilterneeded vistas over the beach.

  • Emily Elisabeth

La Copa Llena at The Black EagleArrow

    $$

Framed perfectly by swaying palms and strung with delicate fairy lights, La Copa Llena feels like a rom-com setting. Though the restaurant is known for its farm-to-table tapas, the cocktails alone are worth the trip to Rincón. There are playful tropical riffs on classics (like the Spicy Parchatini, a vodka Martini with a splash of chili-infused passionfruit juice), plus easy-sipping summery concoctions (like the Rincón Shandy, made with Medalla beer, gin, lime, and orange). There’s also a small wine list featuring mainly Spanish and Chilean whites.

    La FactoríaArrow

    $$

Dark, dim, and a little grungy, with its scuffed checkerboard floors, worn old couches, peeling walls, and chalkboard menus, La Factoria feels like a clandestine underground speakeasy. The bar is famous for taking Puerto Rican mixology to the next level and the cocktails are refreshingly simple but masterfully made. The signature drink, the Lavender Mule—a mix of vodka, ginger beer, and homemade lavender infusion—is the perfect way to kick off the night.

  • Tuluum Restaurante & Tequila BarArrow

    $$

The vibes at Tuluum are as upbeat and fun as its colorful walls and kitschy Mexican decor. On any given night, you’ll find locals kicking back with a margarita or mezcal and enjoying the live acoustic music. This is a tequila bar with killer margaritas: strong, not too sweet, and only $6 during all-day happy hour on Wednesday ($8 every other day). Also popular: a tequila shot with a tangy sangrita chaser, or a mezcal neat—there are 10 different kinds. There are tacos to soak it all up too—get the al pastor.

  • Courtesy Tamboo Bar & Seaside Grill

    Tamboo Bar & Seaside GrillArrow

    $$

Tamboo is the quintessential Puerto Rican beach bar: perched on the sand with sweeping views over a gorgeous surf beach in Rincón. Vibes are breezy and low-key in the daytime and buzzier at night, when it morphs into an unofficial dance club. There are lots of refreshing tropical cocktails like the Sunsetrita, a watermelon- and peach-infused margarita, and the Passionista, a mix of vodka, passionfruit, and grapefruit, with a splash of Sprite. And the food menu coming off the grill is extensive and seafood heavy, befitting a spot on the beach.

La Penúltima perfectly balances a hip and industrial-chic vibe with a cosy neighbourhood ambience. It’s one of those rare bars in Puerto Rico that feels creative and cool without being the slightest bit pretentious. Cocktails are simple and well-crafted—no foams or unnecessary frothing here. We recommend the daiquiri and the Isla Borinquen Fizz, a creamy and carbonated blend of rum, gin, pineapple, coconut, and soda. There are also a few good local beers. All of it brings out the local crowds.

For those searching for authentic dive bars in Puerto Rico, El Batey is the right place for you. The club has cave-like, graffiti walls smeared in business cards and pictures of celebrities and local legends who have partied there over the years. The bar has windows open to the beautiful cobblestone streets of the old city with views of the Gothic San Juan Cathedral and other architectural landmarks. Shoot pool, pick from jukebox classics and sip rum drinks for the perfect, never-ending Caribbean night. Trivia: The Rolling Stones frequently visited El Batey whenever they were in Puerto Rico.

La Factoría is the club where the famous Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” music video was shot. The club provides an incredible cocktail menu, giving a taste of local flavours and an authentic atmosphere that trickles out of every crack of paint on the walls. 5. El Bar Bero

El Bar Bero has a slightly more informal setting. However, its creativity makes up for the lack of elegance. A barbershop by day, mixologist haven by night, this charming and lighthearted local joint can be best described as moustache themed, featuring various barber chairs from different periods and craft cocktails with hairstyle-related names. It is a welcoming and friendly bar with its drinks menu listed on a large chalkboard. Try the homemade ginger beer without a miss.

Strong cocktails, soft reggae music, and terrific ocean views – everything that one can desire for. Kai rests on Playa Jobos in surfing hotspot Isabela in the northwest. The bar stores ten kinds of international beer primarily, and about the same number of cocktails are on the menu plus the six different kinds of margaritas. Note: The cocktails taste tropical and sweet, but they are powerful. A few rum punches may just knock you out, but you cannot go wrong with a cold rum punch, a plate of mofongo, and the spectacular vistas over the beach.

    Address: Isabela, 00662, Puerto Rico.

  9. La Copa Llena at The Black Eagle

Encircled beautifully by swaying palms and decorated with delicate fairy lights, La Copa Llena feels like a rom-com setting. Though the restaurant is known for its tapas-style appetizers, the cocktails alone are worth the trip to Rincón. There is a thoughtful selection of light craft cocktails, like the Spicy Parchatini, a vodka Martini with a splash of chilli-filled passionfruit juice. They also offer easy-sipping concoctions like the Rincón Shandy, made with Medalla beer, gin, lime, and orange. Having won a convincing victory in the second qualification match, our women’s team became the last, 12th participant in the final tournament of the 2022 World Cup. nine0365

The decisive match is always special. It often comes to the fore not so much skill as attitude and psychology. And when a ticket to the World Cup is at stake, all past merits fade into the background. Of course, the Russian team has much more merit than Puerto Rico. And it was our team that was considered the favorite of the match. The point was small: to go to the site and prove that you are really stronger than your rivals.

The head coach of the Russians, Alexander Kovalev, compared with yesterday’s meeting against Belgium, made only one change in the starting lineup: instead of Nina Glonti, Olga Frolkina appeared. Which seemed logical. The forward of Dynamo Kursk the day before became the most productive in our team, scoring 10 points and making 3 long-range shots out of 4. Glonti proved at EuroBasket 2021 that, leaving the bench, she can bring a lot of benefits with her hits. nine0010

This move worked 100 percent. Already in the first attack, Frolkina reminded that she was an excellent sniper, hitting the ring from behind the arc. True, there was no immediate continuation. In the starting three minutes, the Russian team did not score anything else, although in defense they missed only one effective attack of their rivals. And then Raisa Musina and Elizaveta Komarova got down to business. Our captain dominated the opening quarter with 8 rebounds, the same as all Puerto Rican players combined! It was she who moved the matter forward, and after that Komarov scored 5 points in a row. Her accurate three-pointer, after which the opponents were forced to take a timeout, took place just after Musina’s pass – 10:3. nine0010

The pause was good for the Latin American team. It’s good that its players did not perform free kicks in the best way. But they played much more actively under our ring. After 8 minutes, the Russian team led only “+5” (14:9), but then Glonti appeared on the court just in time. And she confirmed the correct choice of our coach with two long-range hits – 22:11 by the first break.

The double difference in the score almost played a cruel joke on the Russian team. In the debut of the second period, Komarova brought the gap to +13, but the Puerto Ricans responded with their first well-aimed three-pointer, which gave them additional strength. The second successful attempt led to the first time-out of the Russians (27:19at the 13th minute), but he did not help either. Losses and appeared holes in the defense sharply revived the intrigue that had died out: by the middle of the quarter, only 4 points remained from a large advantage – 27:23.

Three-pointers came to the rescue again. The ardor of the rivals was cooled down by Komarova’s hit, and a minute later Yuliya Kozik also scored – 35:26. This 9-point advantage was preserved for the big break. But it was obvious that the Russian team needed to be added in defense. In the second quarter, she missed twice as many as in the first – 22 points. nine0010

And our girls have added. But how! They not only blocked all approaches to their ring, but also played superbly in attack – easily, gracefully and super-efficiently. The opponents were forced to take the first time-out in the second half after a well-aimed three-pointer by Komarova just 63 seconds after the resumption of the game (47:33), the second – after a long-range shot by Frolkina at the end of the 24th minute (55:36). Uselessly! Unfortunately, the Puerto Ricans played out in the attack Musina, who had already managed to complete a double-double. Under the shield, the opponents could stop her only at the cost of violations (in vain – 6 hits out of 6 in this quarter). Plus, our captain was marked by a hit from behind the arc, and for a snack – also a block-shot in defense. The dash of the Russians, which lasted a little over 5 minutes, knocked out the rivals – 20:3 and “+26” (62:36)! nine0010

Although there was still one and a half quarters to play, it became obvious that our team had completed the task assigned to it. But she did not think to stop there! As soon as the final period began, after Glonti’s shot, the 30-point mark was overcome (76:45).
