Virginia Tech massacre
institute (state university) April 16, 2007.
April 16, 2007
Dormitory shooting
Around 6:45 am, Cho Seung Hee stood at the entrance to the West Ambler Dormitory, which at that time had 895 students. He went inside using his magnetic card. Around 7:15 a.m., he burst into the room of 19-year-old Emily Jane Hilscher and shot her. Ryan Christopher “Stack” Clark, 22, who was nearby, tried to help Hilscher while still alive, but was killed on the spot by three shots. Hilscher remained alive for about three hours after her injuries, but no one helped her. She died on the way to the hospital. After Cho returned to his room, where he changed into bloody jeans and a white T-shirt, deleted all letters from his Internet mailbox, wrote a suicide note and a video letter. Later, he pulled out his computer’s hard drive. Around 8:10 a.m., he was spotted next to a pond where he had thrown his mobile phone and hard drive from his computer. The search was unsuccessful. 1 hour and 46 minutes after the first shots at 9:01 Cho entered the post office, where he mailed a package containing a DVD containing the video letter to NBC. Cho then moved towards the training building. He had a backpack that contained a Glock 19, a Walther P22, a hunting knife and a hammer, as well as 400 rounds of ammunition and 12 ten-round magazines.
School building shooting
Around 9:30 a.m., Cho entered the Virginia Tech school building, locked the main doors with a chain, and left a note saying that an attempt to open the door would cause an explosion. A few minutes later, one of the professors found a note and took it to the administration, on the third floor, just a few minutes before the shooting began. At this time, Cho Seung Hee walked around the classrooms. Around 9:40 he entered room 206, where he opened fire with two pistols at the students inside the room. He killed Professor G. W. Loganathan, 9 students and wounded two more. Cho then entered room 207, where a German class was being taught by Christopher James “Jamie” Bishop. The shooter killed Bishop and 4 students, and injured six more. Cho then tried to enter room 204, but 76-year-old Liviu Librescu blocked the door with himself and did not let go until all the students had left the room through the window. Librescu himself received five wounds and died. Despite Librescu’s efforts, one student in his classroom was still killed through the door. Professor Jocelyn Coutur-Novak and student Henry Lee were killed in room 211 when they tried to barricade the door. Cho then headed back to room 207, but the people inside had already barricaded themselves and started dressing their wounds. Through the door, Cho Seung Hee wounded two students, Caitlin Carney and Derrick O’Dell. Cho then entered room 206, where a wounded Walid Mohamed Shaalan tried to get out from under the table, but Cho fired again, killing him. The police arrived at 9:45, but was unable to enter the building. Meanwhile, Cho killed Partahi Mamor Halomoan Lumbatuoran with a shot in the head, shot at Guillermo Colman, but missed. Two more bullets hit the already dead Lumbatworn. Cho then left the auditorium and entered Room 205, but the door was blocked by a table. The offender shot several times at the door, but did not hit anyone. Professor Kevin Granata evacuated 20 students, after which he went to find out what was wrong. The assassin spotted the professor and shot him. For a while, Cho walked around the classrooms, shooting at windows, doors and students. AT 9:51 Cho Seung Hee committed suicide by shooting himself in the temple in room 211. The bullet severely disfigured his face in the area of his upper jaw and nose, making it difficult to identify the shooter.
- 9:59 am — Police stormed the building, but no more gunshots were heard.
- 10:02 a.m. — Police found Cho Seung Hee’s body.
- 10:17 a.m. — The dean of the institute ordered all students to be notified of the cancellation of classes.
