9 Best Places You’ll Want to Stop to Eat in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico

9 Best Places You’ll Want to Stop to Eat in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico

While studying in San Juan, you’ll want to check out the delicious food scene throughout the city. Old San Juan is rich in history, color, art, and tradition and is home to several one-of-a-kind Puerto Rican restaurants. We’ve gathered a list of favorites, including traditional Puerto Rican cuisine, cafés, bars, gelato, and even the local farmer’s market.

Where will you go on your first food trek throughout Old San Juan?

El Jibarito

Locals say El Jibarito – the little hillbilly – is the best authentic Puerto Rican food downtown. The brightly colored, traditional restaurant pulls influences from African, Indian, and Spanish cultures, which transcend into delicious dishes. They’re known for making the best mofongo in Puerto Rico, a dish made from fried green plantains with garlic and crackling pork rinds. Bring your friends, and make sure El Jibarito is one of your first stops on the island!

La Factoría

This small bar has been making all kinds of “Best of” lists for years, often ranking in the top 50 best bars worldwide. Most recently named the Best Bar in the Caribbean 2022, La Factoría seems like a hidden gem tucked into the northwest corner of Old San Juan. Hosting live music and some of the best mojitos around, it’s no wonder La Factoría makes the top of our list.

Chocolato

A small gelato shop located in the heart of Old San Juan, this is a spot you don’t want to miss. With a variety of flavors, including chocolate, raspberry, s’mores, and several more, Chocolato has the perfect post-dinner dessert. Get creative and order a gelato cocktail for around $6.00 before heading out for the night!

Mercado Agrícola de Viejo San Juan

You’ll always have Saturday morning plans with the local farmer’s market. Close to El Morro and the water, browse through the vendors to gather fresh produce, sushi, fruit salad, coffee, or various street foods. What a great opportunity to meet locals and practice your Spanish language skills! Make sure to bring cash and enjoy some tasty treats, including vegetarian and vegan options.

Café Cola’o

Located next to the ferry harbor, this homey café has a great selection of pastries, coffee, and juices to kickstart your day. With a great view of the water, enjoy your breakfast or mid-day pick-me-up in their outdoor seating area. Often recommended by local tour guides, Café Cola’o should definitely make your list of local food stops.

Bien Papayas

Another great café and breakfast/lunch option, Bien Papayas, is located across from El Castillo San Cristobal. The café boasts eccentric and breezy vibes, and the servers will feel like instant friends. Fill up on tropical smoothies, omelets, breakfast wraps, sandwiches, pastries, or even a boozy coffee if that’s your taste! Their mallorcas – sweet bread rolls – are known to be some of the best in the area.

Cayo Caribe

Cayo Caribe is located only a couple of blocks from the harbor and offers a great seafood selection. Favored by locals and tourists alike, this is a fantastic option for lunch, dinner, or even drinks as the night descends. All of their seafood is received fresh weekly from local fishermen and is used to make famous dishes like paella, stews, or fish tacos. They even have a small vegetarian menu!

Señor Paleta

Known as one of the fastest-growing small businesses in Old San Juan, Señor Paleta serves fruit and creative popsicles. Flavors include pineapple, passion fruit, strawberry mojito, nutella, and more. Their popsicles are a great, refreshing option on a hot day while exploring the city!

Pretty much anywhere you choose to eat in Puerto Rico is going to be delicious, trust me, I have experienced this first hand! From authentic mofongo, or mashed green plantains mixed with garlic, and usually, some kind of meat and Caribbean seafood, to possibly the best burger you’ll ever eat, Puerto Rico is a culinary paradise – not to mention the delicious Puerto Rican coffee. You can’t go wrong with the cuisine here. So, let’s check out some of the best places to eat in Puerto Rico so you can discover what I already know!

Poet’s Passage is a must-stop coffee shop and café if you’re in Old San Juan. They have truly delicious coffee (I recommend the white chocolate mocha), café sandwiches, sweets, and more – to top it off, it’s also an art gallery and store! Before or after you eat, you can browse the wares and talk with the shop clerks – they’ll likely tell you to come back later for a poetry reading or open mic night, held right here, on a stage in the shop.

Zombie Coffee in Old San Juan

Another Old San Juan hot spot, Zombie Coffee is a coffee and frozen yogurt shop, plus, they also have salad, beer, and pizza (including dessert pizza)! Their coffee gets rave reviews, and I can personally attest to the deliciousness and variety of their fro-yo flavors, especially on a warm night in San Juan. Build your own fro-yo sundae and/or pizza, then relax outside in the beer garden or lounge area.

3. Yamburger in San Juan

I love burgers, and this place definitely raises the bar. Before you ask, the patties aren’t made of yams – just regular beef. You’ll find Yamburger amid the chaos of the San Juan streets – it’s a completely outdoor venue, with a covered bar and seating area, and the atmosphere is fun and inviting. They’ve got a variety of beers and food that ranges from ribs to egg rolls but are most well known for their creative and delicious burgers (which come with the Yamburger design printed on the bun)! I’ll never forget the brunch burger I had here…

4. El Jibarito in Old San Juan

Editor’s Note: There’s no photo available at the time of writing

If you’re looking for some authentic Puerto Rican food, El Jibarito comes highly recommended. Inside, the walls reflect the color and culture of the streets of Old San Juan, and the staff is friendly (though you should keep island time in mind.) Mofongo, fried plantains and sweet plantain pie, seafood and yellow rice, leaf cake, tostones, and other examples of “Cocina Criolla”, or Creole cuisine, are guaranteed to leave your taste buds satisfied.

El Alambique in San Juan

I especially enjoyed this little seaside dive. It’s right across from Isla Verde, one of San Juan’s beaches, and offers half indoor, half outdoor seating. No matter where you sit, you’ve got a view of the beach and the ocean. They have a lot of seafood options, especially shrimp and crab legs, as well as some American-style food, and a large selection of beers. I had the fish tacos, which came highly recommended, and opted for their coconut rice, both of which receive a double thumbs up, from me!

Lunch by the sea!!

Posted by Leigh Torrence Sr on Saturday, 28 November 2015

Another outdoor seaside restaurant, this place lives up to its name. It was recommended to my family and I, after we visited Las Cabezas Nature reserve, so it’s a popular spot in Fajardo. They specialize in seafood and the classic Puerto Rican mofongo and there’s plenty to choose from. This is where I got my first taste of mofongo, with a side of fried plantains!

El Quenepo is a popular restaurant on the island of Vieques, right on the beach. They pride themselves on their open air atmosphere, where you may be able to catch the sound of street music and horses and their Caribbean island cuisine. They have lots of fish and other seafood entrées, pasta, and other meats such as steaks, pork, and lamb. They have a handful of decadent desserts, as well as an extensive wine and cocktail list.

The atmosphere and the food here have nothing but positive reviews. Though it may take some time to get a table, due to its popularity, happy visitors say it’s well worth the wait. A signature bread and a variety of delicious pasta and seafood to the evening entertainment of live music and the sound of the ocean nearby, seem to be the allure here. The salmon over coconut rice is the most recently recommended, by many.

This award-winning restaurant has an ever-changing menu and prides itself on using local, organic ingredients. The atmosphere is bright, and so is the food. Because of how often the menu changes, there’s no menu on their website, but if you’re ever in Isabela, you’ve got to give this place a try. They host plenty of events, so check their blog, and they are also known for their music. Needless to say, CLMDO is a never-ending surprise.

A little on the classier side, Lola Eclectic Cuisine certainly has an eclectic menu. It features a bit of an international blend, from Caribbean fusion seafood and meats to Criolla and other Puerto Rican dishes and even a kids menu – it may be hard to choose what to eat here! There’s also a bar area, and the atmosphere is hard to beat. Just in case you don’t believe me, I should mention it received a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence.

A taste of island life

No matter what part of the island you’re on, there’s good food to be found. Whether you want traditional Puerto Rican cuisine, a dish from home or a combination of both, Puerto Rico’s got it – not to mention all the spectacular coffee. If you want to immerse yourself in Puerto Rican culture, I’d start with the food.

Top 10 places where you can play board games in Moscow

Reviews

Board games are always accompanied by fun and loud laughter, and the company usually gathers rather big. The owners of many establishments, despite the boom in games such as Uno, Alies (Associations), Munchkin, Seth and many others, do not want to endure the noise and din in their cafe. But still, there are enough institutions in Moscow that are happy to accept you and bail any of the games.

1. “Pir.OGI” on Sretenka
In the club “Pir.OGI” you can not only eat delicious and inexpensive food, listen to good music, but also, of course, play board games. This can be done both while waiting for an order in a small company, and at a large table, in the amount of 6-8 people. They offer games absolutely free of charge, among them are checkers, chess and a couple more common ones.
Address: st. Sretenka 26\1.
Opening hours: around the clock.

2. Yo Studio
This anti-cafe is quite popular among Muscovites. There are many reasons for this – clean, light, comfortable. And most importantly, by paying 2 rubles per minute, you can play consoles, ping-pong, and board games. Let there be five or twenty-five of you – by calling in advance, you can agree on everything and have fun.
Address: St. Bolshaya Novodmitrovskaya, 36, p.12.
Opening hours: 09:00-22:00.

3. Restaurant “Sisters Grimm”
For a restaurant located in the very center of Moscow, not far from the metro station “Pushkinskaya”, the prices here are quite democratic, the atmosphere is pleasant and cozy. You can take a board game absolutely free of charge and the waiting time for an order will be noticeably reduced.
Address: 11 Stoleshnikov pereulok.

4. Cafe “Kukushka”
Even on the official website of the cafe, everyone is actively invited to the game libraries, which are often held here. The number of games is colossal: Uno, Tick Tock Boom Party, Jenga, Munchkin, Activity, Mafia, Bop It, Chess 5 in 1, Twister, Boom , “Headlegs”, “Broken phone”, “7 by 9”, “There is a contact!”, “Brigade”, “Crocodile”, “Elias-Party”, “Boss”, “Beehive”, “Imaginarium”, “Ruff “, “Rummikub”, “Jackal”, “Resistance”, “Bet”, “He and She”.
Address: Rozhdestvenka, 6/9/20 bld. Sun 12:00-00:00.

5. Time Club
The largest network of comfortable places in Moscow where you pay only for time. We can say that this is another anti-cafe. Visitors speak well of this place, because here it can be calm, romantic, and fun. Large companies involved in the game are ordinary visitors to the Time Club. From the games: “Leonardo’s Mystery”, “Pandemic”, “Potion Making”, “Agricola”, “Eclipse”, “100,000 years BC”, “7 Wonders of the World”, “Dominion”, “Dominion Intrigue”, “Puerto Rico” “, “Munchkin”, “Activity 2”, “Evolution”, “Arkham Horror”, “Wanted”, “Citadels”, “Heart of the Dragon”, “Rage of Dracula”, “Cuba”, “Boom”, “Monopoly” , “Energoset”, “Elias” and much more.
Address: Yauzsky boulevard, 3, building 1.
Opening hours: around the clock.

6. New Book Store
Here you can play the good old games: “Activity 2”, “Broken phone”, “Elias”, “There is a contact!”, “Crocodile”, “Bet”, and also meet new people. Animators will be happy to help you and explain the rules.
Address: shopping center “Garden Gallery”, Malaya Sukharevskaya Square, 12.
opening hours: on Saturdays, from 13:00 to 16:00. Schedule is subject to change, stay tuned for announcements.

7. Masterskaya Club-Theater
Exciting table game tournaments are held every Tuesday at the Masterskaya. Visiting the “Games Day” is absolutely free.
Address: Teatralny proezd, 3, building 3.
Start: 20:00, every Tuesday.

8. “Kofein”
In one of the most comfortable coffee shops in Moscow, you can not only have a delicious time, but also have fun. There is an opportunity to play board games and involve neighboring tables in the process.
Address: st. Sretenka, 36/2 building 3, Moscow.
Working hours: weekdays: 07:00 – 23:00, weekends: 09:00 – 23:00.

9. BOOCAFE
A magical place in the very center of Moscow, where huge shelves with books are located, creating a unique atmosphere.
