Love nature & kayaking? Then this is the Puerto Rico tour for you!

On this daytime Puerto Rico kayak tour, our guides lead you across Las Croabas bay, while you enjoy the sun over the Atlantic Ocean. As you leave the bay and enter a mystical channel that leads to a peaceful place where the mangroves create natural tunnels and the sights and sounds of nature surround you!

Once entering the channel wind and waves subside and the red mangrove trees start to close in the channel making natural tunnels! Paddling along tree iguanas start to appear on the shores and in the trees as they start to warm their bodies before the morning forage, spotted red mangrove crabs climb the tree as they avoid our kayaks, birdlife starts to appear as the green heron screams out its threatening call, while above us the magnificent frigate bird scans the reddish-brown waters for its next meal of fish; all this and more as you paddle in to the beautiful Laguna Grande!

We start in the quaint fishing village located in Las Croabas (Fajardo). The activity starts with a pre-waiver orientation and kayak-101 safety training. Training takes about 45 minutes depending on group size. After training, your kayaking adventure starts with your guides leading you to a beautiful channel surrounded by the four species of mangroves, which is a sanctuary for the following wildlife, such as birds, insects, small reptiles, and crustaceans.

As you glide through the channel your guide gives commentary on the above wildlife and the role the mangrove forest plays in this fragile environment. The trip through the channel of Las Cabezas de San Juan Reserve takes 30 minutes. Through the channel,  you enter a beautiful lagoon called Laguna Grande. At the Laguna Grande, you relax with beautiful views of the Lighthouse for Fajardo and the El Yunque rainforest.

Calm, quiet paddling leads us to the far side of Laguna Grande, and here your guide gathers the group into the wind and request you to hold! Once he is on the sandy shore he calls one kayak at a time in and assists everyone out of the kayak, once everyone is out, your guide leads you across a small fishermen path to our breakpoint at the beautiful Seven Seas Beach! You have the opportunity to take a swim in the clear warm waters or sit in on a commentary about the seven ecosystems found in this area! After this relaxing 30-minute break, we return to our kayaks and start our run back to our starting point at Las Croabas fishing village. This activity has about two hours in water and is packed with the sights and sounds of many of Puerto Rico’s natural wonders! The full Fajardo kayak tour duration is approximately three hours.

3 Best Bioluminescent Bays in Puerto Rico

Mosquito Bioluminescent Bay

Mosquito Bay water is the brightest in the world

📍 Google Maps | 👉 Browse Nearby Hotels on Booking or Browse Tours to Mosquito Bay

Mosquito bio bay is one of the three bio bays in Puerto Rico, and it holds the Guinness Record for the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. Mosquito Bay’s dinoflagellates reach up to 70,000 per gallon of water.

But, Mosquito Bay is harder to visit than other bioluminescent bays, as traveling from San Juan to Vieques means leaving the main island of Puerto Rico.

Almost every night, a kayak tour enters the bay to appreciate the natural glow. It’s said both Puerto Mosquito and Mosquito bay got their names from the ship “El Mosquito” which belonged to the famous Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí.

How to Get There

To get from Puerto Rico to Mosquito Bay, travelers have multiple options:

✈️ Airplane – The first and simplest way to get to Mosquito Bay is to fly from San Juan airport to Vieques and take a bio bay tour from La Esperanza, where most tours meet.

🚗 Driving – Another option to get to Mosquito Bay includes renting a car at San Juan Airport, driving up to the Ceiba ferry terminal, and taking the ferry to Vieques.

🚕 Taxi/Shuttle – Travelers that don’t want to rent a car can opt for renting a taxi/shuttle from San Juan to the Ceiba terminal, and from there take the ferry to Vieques.

🚌 Tour – Some bio bay tour operators offer transportation once you arrive at the ferry terminal. If you stay in Vieques, you can also choose to rent a car to explore all the great things to do in Vieques.

Having fun swimming in the bay!

📍 Google Maps | La Parguera Lajas | 👉 Browse Nearby Hotels on Booking or Browse Tours to La Parguera

La Parguera Bioluminescent Bay is located on the southern shore of Puerto Rico in the city of Lajas. La Parguera refers to a small fishing village in Lajas, popular not only for hosting a bio bay on its coasts but for having great seafood.

Out of the three Puerto Rico’s bio bays, the Lajas bioluminescent bay is the only bio bay you can swim in. Visitors can also appreciate the Puerto Rico glowing water via boat tours, which is more simple for visiting with kids. Depending on the boat tour, you can either watch from the boat or jump in the water.

This bay is more like a blue green glow than bright blue, and the best time to visit is on a new moon night.

How to Get There

There are three main ways to get to Lajas:

🚗 Driving –  The simplest way to get to La Parguera is by renting a car and driving from San Juan. This method also provides flexibility and allows passengers to make as many stops as they want on the way to Lajas.

✈️ Airplane + Driving – Travelers coming from the United States can choose to arrive directly at Mercedita International Airport in Ponce, which is an hour away from the bio bay. You can also choose to take a plane from SJU to Mayagüez with Cape Air. After reaching either city, travelers can rent a car to reach La Parguera.

🚕 Taxi/Shuttle – It’s possible to take a taxi/shuttle from San Juan to Lajas, but the route is both time-consuming and expensive, with rates over $150.

Laguna Grande

Experience a bioluminescent bay close to San Juan’s airport

📍 Google Maps | 👉 Browse Nearby Hotels on Booking or Browse Tours to Laguna Grande

Laguna Grande bio bay is on the east coast of Puerto Rico and it’s one of the main attractions in Fajardo. This bioluminescent bay, hidden inside Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve, is the easiest to visit for travelers staying in San Juan.

Laguna Grande’s experience is charming in its own way, as you have to kayak through mangrove channels before reaching the bioluminescent lagoon. Even if the most common tour to this lagoon is by kayak, BioIsland operates an electrical boat in the bay.

Although it’s the easiest to visit, this lagoon’s ecosystem is still recovering after Hurricane Maria.

How to Get There

There are multiple ways to get from San Juan to Fajardo:

🚗 Driving – Renting a car is the most convenient way for flexibility. Although the ride from San Juan is short, having your own car will allow you to make stops at El Yunque and Luquillo on your way to Fajardo.

🚕 Taxi/Shuttle – As Fajardo is a touristy destination, you’ll find plenty of taxis and shuttles between San Juan and Fajardo.

🚌 Public Transportation – Travelers can catch a “guagua pública” in the “terminal de carros públicos” of Rio Piedras, in San Juan. For this option, you should know basic Spanish, as you’ll need to ask for directions.

Tours

Boat tour through the mangrove forests of Laguna Grande

You can find multiple Laguna Grande’s bio bay tours. Most tour operators in Laguna Grande offer pick-up in specific hotels in San Juan. Here are some of the top tours:

👉 Bio Bay Kayak Tour in Puerto Rico

Tips For Bioluminescent Bays in Puerto Rico

Tip #1 – Visit on a Moonless Night

Plan your visit to the bio bays in Puerto Rico on a night with a new moon phase. If you can’t visit during the new moon, try to avoid the full moon phase unless it’s cloudy.

The combination of natural and bright artificial light makes it almost impossible to appreciate the blue green light in the bay.

Tip #2 – If You Can, Choose Mosquito Bio Bay

If your Puerto Rico itinerary allows it, choose Mosquito Bay for your visit. Mosquito Bay water holds a high concentration of dinoflagellates, which makes it the brightest bio bay in the world according to the Guinness World Records book.

The shallow and small entrance of the bay and the mangrove trees in Puerto Mosquito keep these microscopic organisms trapped inside the bay, leaving greenish blue trails every time you move the water.

Tip #3 – Pick the Best Method for You

Me heading to La Parguera Bio Bay on a boat tour

While the most common way to visit the bio bays is by kayaking, it’s also possible to visit on a tour boat. Para La Naturaleza also offers a walking guided tour through Laguna Grande, Fajardo. Pick the method that is the most comfortable for you.

Tip #4 – Wear Deet- Free Bug Spray

Due to the high concentration of mangrove trees in the bays, there is a high population of mosquitoes that can easily ruin your bio bay experience, so make sure you apply DEET-free repellent before your visit.

If you’re visiting la Parguera and are swimming in the water, consult with your tour operator about which chemicals you shouldn’t use during your visit.

Tip #5 – Bring an Extra Set of Clothes

Even if you’re not swimming in the water, water will enter your own kayak as a result of paddling. Bring a microfiber towel and clothes to change after you’re done with your bioluminescent bay tour.

What can we say…my wife and I really enjoyed it. Inexpensive in the small village of Luquillo. Close to El Yunque, Kiosks, Horse riding, Water skiing etc. But we feel that what really got us was the kind and humble attention we received from the staff. Sandra and Edgar were wonderful. Always asking if we were fine and comfortable and in need of nothing. In comparison, I recommend YMBH for those who want something simple in the form of a bed and breakfast place. Oceanfront… watch out for those waves! Definitely relaxing! It was a pleasure to stay at YMBH! We will definitely stay here again! (David and Sandra).

Friendly, sensitive and professional staff. Clean, comfortable and elegant rooms with panoramic views of Fortuna Beach and Luquillo Spa. Also with cool air, TV, cable and Wi-Fi in the rooms. Clean pools for children and adults. Don Edgard, the owner of the hotel, is available to help resolve any situation. Very kind. Just like Susan and Brian are excellent. I really like the Yunke Mar hotel. Of course I will return and recommend it.

Good hotel with a beach nearby. We had a great view outside of our room of the ocean, pool and coastline. Lots of local roosters in the morning but didn’t disturb our sleep. Parking across the road for guests – but be prepared for back-to-parking if you’re late in the evening. Not hard to find from route 3 – there are general “Hotel” signs and arrows pointing you down the right path around 34.2/34. Marker 3 km.

The hotel is open for POST-Maria business. Many parts of the building are new, replaced after a storm. The sea view from the hotel is beautiful.
The staff is very friendly and gave excellent restaurant suggestions. You can tell that some of them have been there for years.
The street lights in the neighboring area are still a little scarce, so I recommend having a car if staying here. Free parking is provided for guests.
Beach access directly next to the hotel is limited during the winter months due to erosion and rising water levels over the years, but there is a beach close to the hotel. You could walk, but again, due to the lack of street lights after the storm, it’s best to take a car if you’re from last sunset.
With a car, this is a great base of operations for exploring the eastern part of the island. You can go kayaking in the Farjado area of Bio Bay (open for business) or drive up to the rainforest (still closed at this point, unfortunately, but you can get some scenic driving views along local roads in the area). If you are planning to drive from major highways to less urban areas, I would recommend a suitable vehicle. There are downed power lines, landslides, and very large potholes.

A beautiful view can hear and see the ocean from my set. Stayed in their room, fssing the ocean. The house is like but I wish I had a place to put on my clothes and then my suit and a table. Ice is sometimes hard to find and I think there are not enough outlets. Very friendly staff. Dose has a fridge and a little bar you can sit on. Small pool and amazing views. It would be nice if the beach was easier and it’s not the best place for someone who can’t walk stairs. Good breakfast.

Good hotel. This place is right on a small beach, so close that with strong waves, a few waves will easily hit the wall and put a little bit on the pool/lounge. Not sure if I will stay here again. It was good, I just got bored because of the high waves that we couldn’t actually go into the water. And somehow isolated so that you need a car to get to the nearest food place. The only food served in the hotel is Breakfast from 8:00 to 9:30AM.

Nice small private little B&B. Right on the beach front, private parking, swimming pool in case you don’t want to go to the ocean. One of the best places to catch the sunrise is in Luquillo. The hotel rooms are clean and well stocked. Friendly staff and there is a shop within walking distance in case you are missing important items. 20 minutes from El Yunque National Forest, 40 minutes from San Juan, 25 minutes from Fajardo (Bio Bay) easy access to 3 routes (highway). Great place if you want to be close but far enough away to enjoy a quiet sunrise.

Hotel con: shady neighborhood where you worry about your car all night, loud barking doberman next door that kept us up all night, very loud church across the road that took place loud service until late both nights we were there, the water pressure in the shower was literally a spray of warm water and with hot water turned on all the way and not cold. Oh, and fricken roosters that crow from 5 am until dark. You won’t sleep-in here. Pros: Friendly staff, close to fairly quiet beach (the stairs from the hotel don’t access it), cold A/C and satellite TV, and the bed was decently comfortable.

Not on the beach. You are by the ocean (Mar) in the outbuildings. Front rooms, noisy neighborhood or (el barrio). On Saturday morning at the church across the street, the guy had a pressure force on the church parking lot for 3-4 hours. On the right side of the street it was loud music from the bar block 11:00 pm The staff were ok – average friendliness. The breakfast was good. Private parking. It is what it is!. I will return, hopefully without noise in the area. Note: Beach (seven seas) – this was missed about 30 minutes drive $5.35 for parking, $1.00 for use in bathrooms.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. There was a dog barking all night on the side of the building that I stayed the first night. They then moved me to the largest suite 2 BR on the other side with a balcony right over the water for the same price as a single.
There are some nearby beaches that you can explore. Walk along the river bank to the west to find some great spots to swim.
