Very worthwhile tour.

Feb 2023

Great tour – bioluminescence is beautiful. Well worth taking the tour. Your butt will get wet, but T shirt is OK. Consider a light jacket if it’s windy. Don’t bother brining your camera or cell phone – you can’t photograph the bioluminescence and the screen and flash will blind you and everyone else. Staff were great.

Sublime experience

Feb 2023

We had a great time! Sunset, kayaking through mangroves listening to the night sounds, seeing the last light and then the planets and stars emerge, lovely! Then the bioluminescence we got to see before the moon rose. Then, as we paddled back, the moon burst through clouds on the treetops and lit our path back. It was a beautiful nights. The guides were professional, courteous, and kept everyone safe. It was very unique. I recommend it if you enjoy kayaking or just being on the water in a beautiful place.

We had an excellent experience. The tour guides were very friendly and knowledgeable and did everything they could to ensure we made the most of our experience.
I’ve done this before, and this time we opted to start out before sunset. I really enjoy kayaking through the mangrove forest. The whole thing was a wonderful experience.

Great experience

Jan 2023 • Couples

We had a nearly full moon for our tour, which we knew when we booked, but such was the timing of our trip. We still decided to go with our party (family) of six adults because even kayaking at night would be a unique adventure…right? We were able to see the bioluminescent with the help of a tarp to create some darkness. It was a little difficult as our kayaks were all squished together under the tarp. Perhaps a tarp between fewer rafts would be better. The kayak trip up and down the river was a blast. Our guide was superb and gave us so much information and understanding of the ecosystem. It was time we’ll spent. The entire crew was helpful, considerate and friendly! We had a blast AND got a great workout!

A fun night paddling

Jan 2023

The bioluminescence was not very strong while we were there, and Yokahu called us the day before to let us know. We appreciated the transparency, but decided to go. The kayaking tour with Yokahu was very well organized. The paddling through the mangrove was a lot of fun. When we got to the bay, the guides gave a very nice overview of the science behind the bay. Then they used tarps to cover our kayaks so we could see the bioluminescence better. Our guides – Omar, William, and Jensen made the trip a great experience and did a good job of keeping a group of novice paddlers together. We’d recommend this trip

Hard pass, do not book

Jan 2023 • Couples

This was a very poor experience for me and my boyfriend. It was a very congested experience amongst dozens and dozens of kayaks. The guides were rushed and seemed jaded/irritated. It’s also unsafe to kayak in close quarters through the mangroves with motor boats driving the opposite way in pitch darkness. Then once you get to the lake, they cover you with a sandy and dirty tarp for 15 minutes to splash water to view very poorly visible plankton. Hard pass, would not book this tour.

Kayaking alone was worth it, Bio Bay was a bonus

Jan 2023

Going through the mangroves alone was a really fun experience. The bio bay itself was in a down cycle, be sure to ask them about how bright it will be so you have the right expectations, but it was still really fun. I would recommend as a key thing to do in Puerto Rico

Bioluminescent Kayaking in Puerto Rico- The Daily Adventures of Me

We ended up in Puerto Rico at the beginning of our Caribbean cruise. One of the best adventures in my past was randomly finding phytoplankton in Santa Barbara, California. When I saw that Puerto Rico is one of only a handful of places in the world with these organisms, experiencing them again was a priority on my trip. Although the illumination of the plankton was not as extreme as in Santa Barbara, my son and I loved the whole experience. I now consider it one of My Best Adventures Yet and highly recommend it!

Table of Contents

What is Phytoplankton?

Phytoplankton are any number of floating organisms that emit light, most likely as a defense mechanism. The microorganisms in Puerto Rico’s bays are Pyrodinium bahamense or Dinoflagellates. They live in lakes surrounded by mangrove forests. Jellyfish eat the organisms, then also glow. They don’t float around lit up, that would take too much energy. Instead, they light up when they are disturbed or shaken. They appear as sparkling glitter. Since their strobe is so short, it was near impossible to get a decent, real picture.

Where in Puerto Rico Can You See Phytoplankton?

Puerto Mosquito (Mosquito Bay)

Mosquito Bay is on the southern shore of the island of Vieques, which is about an hour offshore Fajardo. It is said to be the brightest lit of the bioluminescent bays. At the time of this writing, you are still allowed to swim or dive with the bioluminescence but may get stung by the jellyfish. It is said to feel like a bee sting but has no lasting effects.

Laguna Grande (Bio Bay)

Bio Bay is in Fajardo, about one hour away from San Juan on the northeast coast of Puerto Rico. It is very easily accessible from San Juan and the airport. It is said to be the second brightest bay, but swimming is not allowed.

La Parguera

This bay in the town of Lajas is the least bright due to a lack of conservation efforts. It is located inland of southeast Puerto Rico.

What are the Best Conditions for High Phytoplankton Activity?

The phytoplankton are brightest during a new moon, low tide, and during drier periods. It is also best to have a cloudless night to reduce glare from city lights.

Our Experience Kayaking in Bio Bay in Puerto Rico

Why I Chose to Kayak in BioBay, Puerto Rico

After much research, I decided to use the tour company, Pure Adventure, for our visit to the Bio Bay. We chose this bay as it is very convenient from Puerto Rico, where our ship left us, and we only had 24 hours to enjoy Puerto Rico that day before we flew out the next morning.

The tours run as a first tour around 6 pm and a later tour around 8 pm. Even though it shortened our day a little, I am so glad we chose the earlier one. Read on to see why!

Where to Stay in Fajardo, Puerto Rico

The view from the El Conquistador Resort in Fajardo, Puerto Rico.

I also really liked Fajardo and would gladly return to the area. We stayed at the incredible El Conquistador Resort, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel, which has a private island for guests to enjoy and enough included activities to keep my family busy for a week.

Where Does the Tour Start?

All the tour companies have kiosks where you meet up in La Parguera Biobay. This park is very active and an enlightening window into Puerto Rican life. You will hear music, see locals fishing and picnicking. There are many food trucks and restaurants right around to enjoy dinner after the tour.

Do You Need to Know How to Kayak?

Before our tour started, the tour company outfitted us with life vests and bug spray. There were about 30 others on the tour, ranging in age from 6 to 70-years old. Some people knew how to kayak, and some were new to the sport. I took part in the tour with my ten-year-old son. We are both in good shape and like to boat. If you are feeling trepidation about kayaking, there are tours available in glass-bottom motorized boats.

How to Get to Bio Bay

Rent a car, Uber, or get a taxi. If you take a cab, arrange for a time for them to pick you up, because no taxis are driving around for you to catch when you want to leave. You can now also call an Uber. The tour company is terrific about communicating. They even sent a pin for us to find them among the many companies in the park.

We got to Fajardo from San Juan by a hired van. If you would rather not stay in Fajardo, but still take this kayak, book a Bio Bay kayak directly from San Juan.

The Paddle

My son and I shared a double kayak. Here he is as we start our paddle.

The kayak into the bay is one mile each way through mangrove forests. Even without seeing the light from the plankton, my son and I loved the beauty of this paddle. On the way to the bay, you will be traveling with the current, so it is an effortless way to get used to maneuvering the boat. Because we chose the first tour, our paddle into the lake was in twilight and was a unique experience to the trip back. If you haven’t been in a mangrove forest before, the trees form a canopy around you, and the roots are visible. It is a thing of beauty.

On the Lake

You will exit the forest into a large lake. If you are on the early tour, the sun will just be setting, so you can relax in your boat and watch an incredible sunset. If you follow me on Instagram, you know that is one of my favorite things to do, and this one will remain in my mind as one of the most memorable sunsets I have seen.

After the sunset, the marine biologist guide will educate the group on how this phenomenon occurs. They then do some interesting manipulating to get it dark enough for you to see the bioluminescence.

The Trek Back

This paddle in the dark is an adventure, and it helped to know already how to kayak and be in decent shape. Once you are under the mangrove canopy, the journey back is in almost complete darkness. The only light you can see is on the boat, which you are following. You will be paddling against the current. The dark, sound of paddles going through water and loud croaking of all the Coqui frogs was so surreal.

Many people were hitting the sides of the canals, but you aren’t in a hurry, so that is kind of fun. I didn’t understand the people who were treating this like a race. People and their idea of being first in line don’t necessarily mature since first grade. So be cool. There is always a guide in the rear of the line so that everyone will make it back to the starting point.

The End of Our Journey

When we got back onshore, the company provided us with water and Puerto Rican snacks. Everything you brought on the boat will be pretty wet, so bring a change of clothes in a waterproof bag. We then headed to dinner in one of the restaurants surrounding the park, where we had mufungo. Mufungo has smashed plantains with meat. Interesting and yummy.

Conch Mafungo with garlic butter and Coco Rico! So worth trying.

This paddle among sparkly water, with sunsets and darkness, was definitely among my favorite kayaking I have ever done. The sounds and sights of the mangrove forest and lake are stunning. Although the bioluminescence wasn’t as profound or interactive as what I had seen in Santa Barbara, it is a unique experience, and Pure Adventure did a great job at enhancing our viewing and educating us about the phenomenon. I would highly recommend this experience.

10 most incredible bays in the world

Since ancient times, the blue light of water in the dark caused people both fear and admiration. Hundreds of years ago, no one even knew about such a phenomenon as luminescence, so such illumination was shrouded in many legends and myths. In the 18th century, the secret of glowing water was finally revealed. It turned out that many marine inhabitants have the ability to glow in the dark…

Light Lagoon, Trelawney, Jamaica

Immediately after visiting the Bob Marley Museum and the Rum Factory, Trelawney County is a must-see. This should be done strictly at night – when the entire beach is illuminated by luminous plankton.

Vaadhoo, Maldives

Unicellular dinoflagellates inhabit the waters near the island. The mechanical forces of the waves cause an electrical impulse in them, which triggers a bioluminescent reaction, as a result of which, at night, the water emits a bluish light.

Matsu, China

No tourist route passes through this place. However, during a trip to China, it is worth stopping by here to admire the incredible night landscapes of the coast after sunset, which are highlighted by single-celled organisms.

La Parguera, Lajas, Puerto Rico

There are three bioluminescent bays in Puerto Rico. One of them is La Parguera. The best time to visit is during the plankton breeding season when everything turns blue.

Advertising

Mosquito Bay, Vieques, Puerto Rico

This is Puerto Rico’s most popular spot to watch plankton glow. Local plankton is considered the brightest. The bay is usually accessed by kayak.

Laguna Grande, Fajardo, Puerto Rico

This is the third bay in Puerto Rico to be neon-lit. It is located in the northeast of the country.

Gippsland Lakes, Victoria, Australia

In addition to the picturesque scenery, the complex of lakes, swamps and lagoons in eastern Victoria is famous for its bioluminescence. Under the influence of mechanical and chemical stimuli, Noctiluca scintillans organisms, which live here in large numbers, “turn on” blue-blue illumination at night.

Carlsbad, California, USA

Neon blue waves can also be seen off the beaches of California. In a certain period, phytoplankton accumulates near the coast. When the waves move, when the wave rolls on the shore, a glow is formed.

Seaport of Zeebrugge, Belgium

The port of Zeebrugge also boasts additional lighting. At night, plankton turns the water near the berths blue.

East Frisian Islands, Germany

At night, the water off the coast of the East Frisian Islands shimmers with a blue-green glow emitted by luminous plankton.

Life of Pi and Avatar in Puerto Rican waters

The films “Life of Pi” and “Avatar” became one of the brightest Hollywood works of the beginning of the new century. Most of all, the enchanting pictures of the worlds created by the hands of artists and computer animators are striking. In the first film, the picture of a phosphorescent island at night is amazing, on which the main character Pi decided to stay for the night. In the second, the spirit is breathtaking from the view of the night landscapes of the planet Pandora. It seems that such worlds can only exist in the imagination. This is not so, and in Puerto Rico you can see for yourself.

There are three bioluminescent bays on the island. Bioluminescence is the light produced by living organisms. The most understandable example is the glow of fireflies in the night forest. The bays of Puerto Rico are home to millions of single-celled organisms called “dinoflagellates”. In an excited state, they begin to emit a bluish light, but this lasts only for one second. The glow occurs when sea “fireflies” are disturbed – by wind, wave, oar or hand. At the same time, a picture appears that takes you to other fantastic worlds. Puerto Rico offers a rare service – night kayaking in a bioluminescent bay!

This trip does not require kayaking experience, but good health and physical strength will be needed, as the trip lasts several hours and sometimes you have to paddle against the current and waves. All participants are provided with life jackets, so the chances of accidentally drowning are zero. Unfortunately, it is not possible to take a regular camera or video camera with you, as there is a high probability of flooding them with sea water. In addition, the action takes place at night, in almost complete darkness, so the magical spectacle will remain imprinted only in your memory.

A group of two dozen kayaks, each of which sits two people, starts accompanied by instructors. Each boat has a green light at the stern and a red light at the bow. A red beacon flashes on the instructor’s back. Such signaling is absolutely necessary when the group enters a narrow channel connecting two bays – external and internal. The channel goes through the mangroves, which form a dense tunnel of roots, trunks, branches and leaves of trees.

Can’t see anything but the beacon of the boat ahead! This creates an indescribable feeling. Absolute darkness, the murmur of water, green lights in front and red lights in the back take you to the world of dreams. Thoughts about the inhabitants of the underwater world involuntarily pop up – who are they and what size? It seems that someone unknown and huge is about to pounce on you from above. Fears are quite real, because in the dark you instantly lose your orientation, and the boat sticks its nose into the coastal trees hanging over the water. Sometimes someone’s kayak turns in the opposite direction and chaos immediately arises – when a red beacon appears in front of you, you involuntarily suspect that your boat has turned around. Since everyone thinks so, the kayaks begin to spin in place until the instructors come to the rescue, restoring order in the column.

Additional difficulties are created by the turns of the duct. The instructor in front shouts “right” or “left” from time to time, but the darkness does not allow timely maneuver, and again the kayaks begin to circle in place in some kind of surreal dance, visible only along the trajectories of red and green beacons. Once again, instructors come to the rescue. The worst thing is when your kayak slows down before the next turn, lags behind and the only landmark disappears in front – the green beacon of the boat that goes ahead. Then you have to move literally by touch, using the paddle as a kind of radar, starting from the branches of trees.

Finally, a luminous spot appears in front – an exit from the canal to the inner bay. And here the magic begins – the oars, immersed in water, flash with a strange blue light, similar to the flame of a burning gas. Myriads of fireflies light up water spray, and the hand, lowered into the water, turns out to be dressed in a luminous “glove”. A few more strokes, and the kayak breaks out onto an absolutely flat surface of the bay. What I see makes me want to cry!

Overhead, the endless night sky opens, strewn with myriads of silver stars. The full moon, like a powerful searchlight, illuminates the oval bay, framed by orderly rows of palm trees. But the most fantastic thing happens below – the kayaks themselves turn into huge fireflies, as the water they cut through glows. The boats go to the center of the reservoir, stop and an enthusiastic (!) silence reigns over the bay. Avatar! Life of Pi!

Complete calm reigns. Dark water all around. But as soon as a light breath of wind arises, ripples appear on the surface of the bay, which immediately light up with blue sparkles. A real “fire” breaks out if you scoop up water with your palm. You have a unique opportunity to hold a melted sapphire in your palms for a moment – this is how water looks like while it is in motion. But the most exotic show is put on by fish – they become visible as their movement under water looks like blue lightning. The water column is literally riddled with similar zigzags.
