Great family fun

We had lot of fun paddling thru dark mangrove and navigating thru the stream… Our children were adults but never the less – making waves in the water and seeing the luminescence was fascinating for all. On the way back the batteries on the lights on our vests died so we had opportunity to paddle in complete darkness and enjoy the night sounds or frogs and birds. Really excellent experience!

Mangroves in the moonlight

Beautiful trip. Despite the full moon, we did manage to see some bioluminescence. I brought my 7 year old who got a little scared and everyone on the trip was so kind and patient with her. They helped tow us when she couldn’t paddle and were all around lovely.

Fantastic tour! Took the later,7:30 tour, and we had a wonderful time. The moon was over half full, meaning that it was a little harder to see the luminescence. But the moonlight was an enjoyable and romantic light for kayaking.

My family and I did the night time kayak tour to the bioluminescent bay. The guides gave us a decent run through of kayaking 101 before we departed. They were super helpful and attentive. There was a bit of a current getting out to the channel and some of the other kayakers seemed to think it was a race which was annoying. But once we made it into the channel it was very peaceful and quiet. You’re surrounded by mangroves. The luminescence was not as strong as I remember it being many years ago in Vieques in early summer but it’s still a real treat. Note: you do need to be a bit adventurous for this type of tour. Kayaking 15 mins there and back is a workout! I would avoid going on a full moon as you need it to be as dark as possible to see the fairy dust in the water.

Gustavo our tour guide was fantastic. Perfect for our group of 3 adults and 4 kids ages 7-10. The bioluminescence was really cool and we learned so much. We didn’t realize we needed 1:1 kid/adult and they were great to accommodate us and let us put 2 kids in one kayak. Our younger two were a bit nervous at the start with it being dark and wavy at the starting location but once we got on the kayaks they felt better. We got an email before hand saying it was low visibility but we had no problems seeing the bioluminescence.

Great adventure on the lagoon!

We went on this tour with two families of children (ages 7-11) and we had a great adventure! We saw bioluminescent organisms and had such a great guide (Gustavo) who made the trip safe and incredibly informative! Kayaking outside in the dark was so much fun and so peaceful and meditative. Thank you so much for such a great adventure!

Mangroves, twilight, and bioluminescence

Great trip for family. Went with our family and one other. Trip left promptly at 5:30. Went through mangrove swamp to large lagoon where the bioluminescent organisms were seen. Tour well run and fun. Would recommend.

The BEST!

This is the best tour. The guides are so knowledgeable. While observing other tour groups, here are a few things that set this company apart:
1. Small groups (no more than 30).
2. Four guides per tour (one in front, one in back, and two on the sides).
3. Lights on the kayaks (so you know what to follow), and on each persons vest. Other tours didn’t have lights at all, and in the pitch black, this makes such a difference)
4. Streamlined process. It was so easy!

We went with two adults and four kids. We felt safe the entire time, and would say this was one of the highlights of our trip to Puerto Rico!

Please Note:

• This tour departs from San Juan. Pick-up at other towns available at an additional cost. To account for transportation, participants should allow up to 5 hours for the entire experience.
• The Bio Bay is an unpredictable natural phenomenon that may be influenced by multiple factors. Bioluminoscity level can vary from very visible to minimum or none without any previous notice. The full moon phase may also affect the visibility of the bioluminescence. In the event of this happening, alternate methods such as the use of a tarp will be incorporated in order to appreciate it.

Safety Requirements and Limitations:

• Participants must be physically capable of paddling a two-person kayak, in a coordinated matter, and not be afraid of the dark.
• Pregnant ladies past their first trimester, persons with previous injuries, back problems or recent surgery cannot participate on this tour.
• Children must be 7 years or older to participate.

January 28th. Virgin Islands, log 11598, coordinates 18*18.1N 064*36.0W.

On board the “Juliet” Anna Nadeinskaya is a sailor, Yevgeny Shkaruba is a captain.
Left the Virgin Islands towards the Dominican Republic. 310 miles ahead. Should arrive in a couple of days. The wind is fair, about three points, we will have to maneuver with bag stays. Last night I tried to post photos of a beach day on the island of Gorda on the site, but something didn’t work out, the site didn’t want to. Now only in the Dominican Republic. nine0005 I liked Gorda Island as a beach island… small cozy bays, fenced with huge boulders, snow-white crumbly sand, coral reefs, an ocean wave that breaks noisily against the rocks and fills all nooks, grottoes and caves with noisy cheerful whirlpools. The island is densely overgrown with trees, cacti of all stripes and shrubs. In this cactus jungle, trails have been laid that are pleasant to walk from the beach to some restaurant to have a couple of cold cocktails and surf the Internet. The beach is different from anything I’ve seen before. Trees grow on the beach, it seems ficuses and under them you can hide from the scorching sun. There are several dozen moorings near the beach. Throwing anchors is not accepted and dangerous, you can leave the anchor at the bottom, clinging to the reef. nine0005 The island is ten miles long. the population is about three thousand people. There is a good marina.
Now it’s in the past. The Juliet is heading west.
1730, log 11636, coordinates 18*00. 2N 065*19.9W.
Passing Isla de Vieques. I tried to look up this word in a Spanish dictionary and couldn’t find it. So we don’t know what it means.
..Slowly crawling, we could add two knots…. a phrase from the film beloved by marine practitioners – “The Way to the Berth”.
But this is not in our power. Just set up a spinnaker…. looking at the night together … no … we won’t. I think closer to midnight to approach the American coast of Puerto Rico and anchor there under the cover of darkness. Maybe they won’t get arrested. I don’t want to spend an extra sleepless night, there are still so many of them ahead. nine0005 The last time we registered our arrival was in Tortolla, and the penultimate time in… let me remember… in Antigua. Several islands scrolled without registering. The Americans, let’s hope, will not be offended either.

January 29

We spent the night at the anchorage of Pta Colchones Bay (17*55.8N 066*23.3W). By two o’clock in the morning we approached a bay well protected by coral reefs, passed through a small passage inside, I was already looking forward to a quiet stop and then a patrol boat appeared. Illuminated us with a spotlight. I stopped the yacht and the boat approached at a distance of three meters. We were asked from the boat where we were going from and where we were going. We responded and asked permission to stay here for the night. Of course, we kept silent about the fact that we do not have an American visa. We were asked from the boat why we did not go to the neighboring marina, to which we inarticulately asked again if we could anchor in this place. I must also say that we approached the shore, where the oil refinery is located, it shone with lights and a power plant. But I didn’t want to go anywhere else. The water in the bay was so calm, I have not seen such a thing from Santa Lucia. On the boat, they probably shrugged their shoulders and said good night. We waited until we move and left. nine0005 Still not quite believing in success, we anchored, watched a movie for a while, drank, ate and went to bed.
Woke up at eight in the morning and looked around. An amazing thing – we were surrounded by coral reefs densely overgrown with greenery. And about five miles away rose beautiful mountains lit by the morning sun. The bay itself rather resembled the delta of a large river, divided into many branches by small islands. Here and there one could see red and green beacons showing the fairway.
0830 weighed anchor. We are heading towards the Dominican Republic. nine0005 1130 anchored “swimming” next to the wonderful islands of Isla Morrilito and Isla Caja de Muertos. anchorage coordinates 17*53.2N 066*31.8W
I strongly recommend to everyone who goes to these places as a good anchorage sheltered from the South East wind. The islands have a small and cozy national park… but there is no bar or restaurant. On the other hand, we had a wonderful chat with a Spanish family who came here for a picnic.
In the evening at sunset, they caught a fish.

January 30,

0322, log 11774, coordinates 17*54.5N 068*03.8W.
You can see the glow of lights over the Dominican Republic. There is almost no wind, we go under the motor, but how! Eight and a half knots! Very good, probably a fair current here.
Today we have all sorts of customs procedures. How you don’t want to. I found the nearest entrance port on the map – “Marina Casa de Campo”, there is another 55 miles.
finally arrived at the marina Casa de Campo. Time 12 noon.
I want to sleep.
Upon arrival, they immediately fell into the meat grinder of courteous extortionists.
