Good Place that needs to improve a lot
We went to Blue Lagoon to an open house 6 or 7 months prior to our wedding date. They offered a package of 100 guests including alcoholic beverages. We got engaged with the place since our 100+ guests will fit great with a nice decoration. Everything was good until the time to do the tasting. They changed 3 times the tasting date since the previously booked date. The final date was scheduled at the venue’s personnel convenience during the week in business hours, so we needed to make arrangements in our respective jobs to assist.
When we arrived to the venue on our wedding date there was none of the personnel in charge present. We arranged and paid extra to have full open bar for 4 hours, since we paid extra to extend the party for an additional hour. After two hours almost everything was gone and at the third hour, without any advise, the bar closed. One hour prior to the agreed one and before the party ended. It is important to mention that we paid in full for the 134 guests 3 weeks before our wedding date; a more than reasonable time.Dinner was good and menu served as agreed. However, we paid for 13 extra plates for the music band and their staff and in the middle of the dinner, our wedding planner told us that there were only food for only 4 plates and none of the musicians haven’t eat. I told our wedding planner to solve the issue (which was not her responsibility) with somebody in charge of the venue, doing whatever it takes. Luckily, and since our wedding planner did a great job, she solved the issue we don’t know how. I’m still figuring how did that happen, either when we have 10 confirmed guests that didn’t show.
Pros-These issues were not noted by our guests since they had a lot of fun and we enjoyed our wedding a lot. But we had less than expected as contracted. The venue is in a good location and good price for the area. They also allowed one full day prior to the wedding date to do the decoration with conditioned air.

Malta. Comino Island and Blue Lagoon Beach
As usual, in the off-season we go to the sea, and this autumn we went to the Maltese archipelago. We visited the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino.
Today I’ll tell you about the smallest of the inhabited islands of the state of Malta – Comino (Comino), Blue and Crystal lagoons, how to get to Comino Island from Gozo and Malta, and 7 life hacks how to avoid crowds. And of course, there will be many bright photos 🙂
Our trip to Comino
We went to Comino for a day from Gozo. We were leaving on a 10 hour flight from Mgarr.
Blue Lagoon (Blue Lagoon) is a bay protected from waves by the islands of Comino and Cominotto. The Maltese name for the Blue Lagoon is Bejn il-Kmiemen, which means “between Comino”.
There is fine white sand at the bottom, and because of this, the water has received a bright blue color.
Opposite is Cominotto (English Cominotto, Cominetto, Malt. Kemmunett) is a small uninhabited island 100 meters from Comino, which protects the Blue Lagoon from the waves. Its area is only 0.25 sq. km. nine0003

Every flat piece of land is occupied by paid sun beds with umbrellas. The sun loungers are close to each other. The beach there is a tiny patch of sand.
Prices – 25 euros for 2 sun loungers and an umbrella on the sand by the water, 20 euros on the rocks.
At the beginning of the eleventh there were not yet large crowds in the Blue Lagoon and all the trade around the pier had not unfolded.
We decided not to swim in the Blue Lagoon, but to walk around the island.
First we went along the coast to the right of the pier. The views are incredible! Many different arches, sea caves and holes in the rocks.

Near Crystal Lagoon (Crystal Lagoon) there is also no beach, there is only a small concrete platform. There was only one couple besides us. The water is clean and clear, it would be great to swim there with a mask and snorkel. We enjoyed swimming.
There are fewer people there, because you have to jump into the water and then climb the wall. It’s not difficult, but it scares away the majority 🙂

While we were swimming, a large ship landed, and other people came up from the shore, and our solitude ended.
Near the Crystal Lagoon there is a beautiful arch that is easy to miss.
Then we went to St. Mary’s tower . She herself is not distinguished by some beauty, but from her cool views of the rocks, the sea and the whole island.
Plans to build a tower on this site to defend the island were hatched as early as the 14th century, and a special tax on wine was even introduced for its construction. But King Alfonso V of Aragon changed his mind and spent the money on other needs. nine0003
The island stood defenseless for another two centuries, and in 1618 the tower was finally built by the Knights of Malta under the leadership of the Grand Master of the Order of the Hospitallers Alof de Wignacourt.
Later it was used not only for defense, but also as a prison.
A dirt road leads from here to the other side of the island.
The beaches of Saint Nicholas Bay and Santa Maria Bay were not impressive. In addition, after the storm, the water was cloudy, and heaps of algae washed up on the shore. If there was no storm, then these would be normal sandy beaches. We didn’t even take pictures of them. nine0003
By lunchtime we returned to the Blue Lagoon and were stunned: someone was sitting on every piece of land, people were visible or invisible.
Large sightseeing ships arrived, which are brought from Malta. Near the pier, a trade has unfolded: food, water, booze, sunglasses, lockers for valuables, sun loungers and umbrellas.

We found a swimming spot near a small arch (to the left of the pier) and then drove back to Gozo. nine0003
Information about the island of Comino
The name Comino comes from the word cumin (cumin), which was grown here. Previously, a community of 60 farmers lived on the island with their own priest, teacher and bakers. In 1960, the farm was abandoned and the state bought the land. Now only 3 people live on the island.
In Maltese, the island is called Kemmuna.
Wikipedia reports that the island of Comino was inhabited during the Roman Empire, then abandoned, and in the Middle Ages its secluded coves became a haven for pirates who robbed ships that sailed between Malta and Gozo. The Knights of Malta used the island for recreation and hunting. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the island served as a prison, and during the French occupation, Comino had a quarantine and infectious diseases hospital. nine0003
The area of Comino Island is only 3.5 sq. km.
Movies Troy and Gone were filmed on the island. And in the film The Count of Monte Cristo , the tower of St. Mary was used as the castle of If.
How to get to Comino from Malta and Gozo
There are 5 ways to get to Comino Island, all of them by water.
1) Passenger boats (€10 round trip). They operate from Mgarr and Hondoq Bay in Gozo, and from Cirkewwa in Malta. You can go on the route Malta-Comino-Gozo or Gozo-Comino-Malta for the same price. nine0003
Boats run once an hour, during the season from 8 am to 6 pm, in the off-season from 9 am to 5 pm. The ticket is valid only on the day of sale. If you are going to spend the night on the island, then take one-way tickets.
How do you know which boat to take from Comino? The tickets are different colors from different companies and the captains are yelling things like “red ticket to Gozo” or “blue ticket to Malta”.
2) Water taxi from the same ports (€10 one way).
3) Excursion tour . From the island of Malta they carry on large ships (30-50 euros). They leave from several cities, the price usually includes food and drinks. In the reviews of these excursions, everyone complains about the crowds and noise, but it probably depends on who drank how much 🙂
This is a typical ship. In the season there are dozens of them, and they stand side to side.
On GetYourGuides, such sea cruises are cheaper – from 20 euros, and you can see the reviews of other tourists.
Gozo is transported in small boats, usually without meals.
There are sunset tours from Bugibba.
4) Rent of a motorboat (from 50 EUR/hour 4-seater + fuel costs). We saw boat rentals at Hondoq Bay. Small boats do not require a license.
5) By kayak or SUP from Hondoq Bay – distance is only 1 km. Just be careful with boats, especially in Blue Lagoon. This option is only suitable for experienced paddlers because passing boats constantly create waves.
Prices:
- Single canoe 5 EUR/hour
- Double kayak 10 EUR/hour
- SUP 15 EUR/hour
There is also an hour tour around Comino (from 120 euros + fuel). nine0003
Transport on the island
The best way to get around Comino is on foot – it’s small. Moreover, you will see more. The main thing is not to put on flip-flops, but some more athletic shoes.
For the lazy, there are guided tours on off-road segways . It costs 15 euros per person and lasts 40 minutes. You can book directly at the pier. They drive only on primers, they do not call on trails.
Minibuses run between the pier and the hotel (€3 one way or €5 return). nine0003
You can also order water taxi to any part of the island. From the pier to Santa Maria Bay, a ticket costs 8 euros for an adult, 4 euros for a child under 12 years old.
Accommodation on the island of Comino
Comino has only one hotel – Comino Hotel 4 *, which is open only from April to October.
It consists of two parts:
1) main building in Saint Nicholas Bay (pictured),
2) bungalow in Santa Maria Bay.
Also near Santa Maria Bay is campsite , but we didn’t like it: some kind of uncomfortable and little shade. And we did not notice any amenities there such as showers, toilets, kitchens.
How to avoid crowds – 7 life hacks
Since all tourists want to admire the island of Comino, and there are few good beaches in Malta, unrealistic crowds come here. The boats are jam-packed, there is a crowd on the pier, there is nowhere to sit and lie down near the Blue Lagoon, and the sea is just a soup of people. This is especially scary in the summer. It’s easier in autumn, but still crowds. nine0003
I will share life hacks on how not to be disappointed with a trip to Comino and not be there in the crowd.
1. Arrive by the very first boat at 8 am. It is important to get there not during rush hour. Most tourists arrive no earlier than 10 am and leave on the last boats. The Blue Lagoon is the quietest time in the morning.
2. After 10 am, go explore the island. The next swim can be done in the Crystal Lagoon and then on the beaches on the other side of the island.
3. Escape to Cominotto Island. There are fewer people and there is a sandy beach. A round-trip water taxi costs 5 euros per person, children under 12 are free. The ticket may include an umbrella on Cominotto beach (ask when booking). If you have an air mattress, then you can get there for free, just be careful with the boats. nine0003
4. At rush hour, take a 20-minute tour of the sea caves, but book in advance, because there are a lot of people. 10 euros per person, minimum 2 passengers.
5. Evening boats are crowded, especially the last one. It often happens that people simply do not fit and then cannot leave the island. There are scandals and almost fights to get on board. Life hack: while they crowd on the pier, you can enjoy the island, watch the sunset, and then go to Gozo or Malta by water taxi. The price is 10 euros per person, but without the queue and hustle. Water taxis run until 9in the evening, but it is advisable to book them before 6 pm in order to leave for sure. Tickets can be bought at the pier.
6. Come not on a morning cruise, but at sunset – there is an option from Bugibba.
7. Stay overnight on the island at the Comino Hotel, then morning and evening the island is yours, along with a few other people.
Attractions Comino on the map
Organic Maps or Google Maps are enough for orientation. Here are all the places on the map:
The most unusual and romantic places where you can swim
Do you like to swim and get excited about beautiful places? In this compilation, we will tell you about the most unusual and exciting water bodies where swimming will become truly unforgettable!
Unusual bathing places are places where experiences are unforgettable and unique. After all, you get pleasure not only from swimming, but also from the place itself, overgrown with a mysterious history.
Mosquito Bay, Puerto Rico
This body of water is located in Puerto Rico and is the most popular bioluminescent waterfall. Due to the huge concentration of dinoflagellates in its waters, this waterfall tends to glow even on bright moonlit nights. A small splash – and the water around you lights up with a magical greenish-blue glow! The perfect place for a romantic swim under the starry sky! nine0003
Devil’s Pool, Zimbabwe
Devil’s Pool, also known as Devil’s Pool, is a backwater on the edge of the African Victoria Falls, which is located in Zimbabwe. The peculiarity of this backwater lies in the fact that the turbulent stream rushing down does not carry the bathers off the cliff. It’s all about a special recess in the backwater, which is difficult to notice, and those daredevils who dare to swim in the pool come out of the water alive and healthy. If you go on vacation to Zimbabwe or will be passing through there, then do not miss your chance and by all means swim in the natural pool. nine0003
Havasu Falls, Arizona
A stunningly beautiful place hidden at the bottom of the famous Grand Canyon. The waterfall is famous, first of all, for its rich emerald color, which these waters owe to the high amount of minerals. The water temperature in the picturesque backwater does not exceed 21 degrees even on the hottest day. However, getting to this magnificent oasis in the middle of arid Arizona is not so easy: for this you will have to overcome at least 16 kilometers on foot along the bottom of the canyon. nine0003
Ik Kil Underground Lake, Mexico
This is one of the most beautiful karst lakes in the Yucatan Peninsula – Cenote Ik-Kil (translated as “The place where the wind is born”). Cenotes (Spanish cenote, from the language of the Yucatan Maya dzonot) are special karst formations – lakes, wells and entire cave complexes with underground rivers and, at times, access to sea water. From the surface, a typical cenote looks like a smooth round well, in which water is visible somewhere below. The Indians call such cenotes “mouths” or “eyes.” And indeed, the wells make some kind of unearthly impression. nine0003
Blue Lagoon, Iceland
The Icelandic Blue Lagoon is a relatively new attraction: it arose only in 1976 by artificial means. Swimming in the water of the lagoon is often compared to bathing in fresh milk: despite the eternally cool air of Iceland, the average water temperature in the Blue Lagoon ranges from +37 °C to +40 °C. But the most amazing thing about the lagoon is, of course, the milky blue color of its water – the result of a high concentration of white clay and other minerals. nine0003
Marina Bay Sands rooftop pool, Singapore
The rooftop pool of a luxurious Singapore hotel provides visitors with two great opportunities at once: firstly, to swim with a dizzying view of the skyscrapers of Singapore, and secondly, to take a photo “on edge of the abyss.” Of course, it is impossible to fall over the edge of the pool due to a technical ledge invisible from the side, but this does not interfere with the photographs. True, only hotel guests are allowed to swim here. nine0003
Sea lagoon in Roca Vecchia, Italy
According to legend, since the muse of poetry bathed in one of the rocky backwaters, this place has been called the cave of poetry (Grotta della Poesia). Now the lagoon opens up an inexhaustible source of inspiration for its visitors.
Little River, Virginia
The Little River flows through the Blue Ridge Mountains in southwestern Virginia. The cool waters of the river save from the hot summer sun, as its banks are generously overgrown with greenery, forming a natural canopy. nine0003
Blue Cave in Croatia
This cave was discovered in 1884. At first, only divers could get into it, since the entrance to it was below sea level. Over time, a small entrance to the miracle cave was built, where small boats could even sail. The Blue Cave is located near the island of Vis and is a popular tourist attraction. The cave is accessible only when the sea is calm, the water in the cave has a bright blue color. The cave is 24 meters long and 15 meters deep. nine0003
Great Blue Hole off the coast of Belize
This is a large blue hole located in the center of Lighthouse Reef, an atoll within the Belize Barrier Reef.
