Extensive renovations in 2017 gave the property a fresh, modern look that fits its coastal setting, as do its breezy open-air common areas. Fully renovated with simple, contemporary decor, its 53 rooms and suites are spotless, comfortable, and quiet, and feature good amenities such as free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and cable TV. Mini-fridges and coffeemakers are only available in suites, though. Waves serves good food and drinks at affordable prices in an outdoor space by the pool, and there is plenty of free parking on-site. This property suits travelers seeking a straightforward Aguadilla base and anyone requiring accommodation close to the airport. Those after more on-site features could try Courtyard by Marriott Aguadilla up the road, but it’s much more crowded.

Formerly a military air base, the Punta Borinquen is a straightforward and contemporary resort located in a calm pocket of Aguadilla, within a short stroll of its much larger, more bustling sister property, Courtyard by Marriott Aguadilla. Its two three-story wings containing guest rooms are divided by the lobby, restaurant, and pool area. Though the exterior is plain and rather dated, the property feels fresh and contemporary thanks to a 2017-18 overhaul. Decor is simple but cute throughout, featuring timber furniture and taupe hues offset with crisp white walls and midcentury-inspired furniture.The layout is fairly intimate, but the feel is very much alfresco — both the restaurant and lobby occupy breezy open-air spaces with pool views. Just like the Marriott, families frequently stay here, but the vibe at this property is much more laid-back, and prices are right for location and amenities.

The pool is a highlight — it’s not huge, but’s a good size for a smallish property, although the limited number of deck chairs can fill up quickly during busy vacation periods. Located next to the pool, Waves restaurant serves a range of meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at great prices in a casual covered area by the pool. Drinks and snacks are also available throughout the day. Though the property is more popular among leisure visitors than among business travelers, the hotel’s convention center — located right across the road — offers over 22,000 square feet of event space, as well as outdoor areas for private celebrations. There’s also plenty of free on-site parking, and the elevators are a handy asset sparing guest from hauling luggage up the stairs. The hotel’s sister property Courtyard by Marriott is located just 300 feet or so up the road, and Punta Borinquen guests have access to a number of its facilities, including a 24-hour casino and David’s Cookies Cafe.
