Post-Fiona, was wet but walkable. Would NOT drive down to the beach with a standard car. 4×4 is best. Flooding made walking impossible on the main path. But, we found a trail to the beach through a tunnel of bush and coconut trees. Lots of wildlife including a herd of wild cows.

There are many phenomena on our planet that surprise and seem incredible at the same time. One of them is beaches that glow at night . Science is studying why this happens, and many people wonder if it’s magic or science.

For this reason, we are going to dedicate this article to tell you everything you need to know about beaches that light up at night, their characteristics and why it happens.

          Index

The name refers to a natural phenomenon by which living organisms emit light. This occurs as a result of a biochemical process involving oxygen, a protein called luciferin, and the enzyme luciferase. This is a reaction that converts chemical energy into light and proceeds as follows.

Oxygen causes the oxidation of luciferin, which starts the process. Luciferase speeds up the reaction, resulting in the formation of water and, more importantly, light. Problems of pure chemistry of a more academic nature are out of place here. But we will tell you that both fungi and bacteria can produce bioluminescence, as well as different types of animals, both unicellular and multicellular. Among them mollusks, crustaceans, cephalopods, worms, jellyfish and even fish.

It is worth noting that bioluminescence can have different colors. They will depend on the creature that produced them. In the vast majority of cases, the shade is green or blue. However, one caused by the deep sea jellyfish Peryphilla peryphilla, for example, has a reddish hue.

In addition to , we must not confuse bioluminescence with fluorescence. In the latter, the energy of the previous light source is captured and sent along with another photon. Instead, as we have already told you, bioluminescence is a chemical reaction.

            Beaches that glow at night

On land, the most popular examples of bioluminescence are fireflies that glow at night. You can see them in many places around the world, but the most famous in the world is Kuala Selangor city in Malaysia if you ever get the chance to go there. But getting back to bioluminescence, we’ll show you some beaches that glow at night as a result.

            Vaadhoo Beach

This wonderful beach is located in the heavenly Maldives, namely on the Raa Atoll. Bioluminescence emerging on its shores, is so breathtaking that it has been given the poetic name “Sea of Stars”.

Reality is a bit bland. This phenomenon is caused by dinoflagellate phytoplankton. When the tide recedes, it accumulates on the shore, and when it comes into contact with atmospheric oxygen, it reacts. As a result, the sand turns blue, as if it were a constellation.

Also this phenomenon can be observed throughout the year on Vaadhoo. But when it’s hotter, logically, on the darkest nights, it’s more valued. Imagine the pleasure of swimming in these waters next to the Côte d’Azur. Because it is also important that you know that there is no danger in it. In fact, many people enhance this blue color by moving the water in the shower.

            big lagoon

Now we are heading to beautiful Puerto Rico with its impressive natural beauty to show you another beach that shines at night. We mean Laguna Grande, located near the city of Fajardo in the northeast of the country. In his case, it is also a dinoflagellate organism that causes bioluminescence, and dozens of tourists come to observe the phenomenon every day.

Out of curiosity, we inform you that on November 11, 2013 Laguna Grande suddenly closed. This did not happen, and all the alarms worked. The city council of Fajardo hired a team of biologists to investigate the incident. Apparently The reason may be the installation of two sanitary pumps in the neighboring Las Crobas residential complex.

Fortunately, everything is over, and after a break of 9 days, Laguna Grande shone again. But the reasons for the lack of bioluminescence at that time were not fully understood.

On the other hand, if you visit this wonder, take advantage of your stay in Fajardo to meet other people from the area. For example, the Reserva de las Cabezas de San Juan has impressive pristine landscapes. There is also the El Yunque National Forest, a tropical rainforest with nearly 40 kilometers of beautiful hiking trails.

            blue grotto

Now let’s move on to another wonderful place on the island of Malta, especially about 15 km from Valletta. There is only one landscape worth visiting, as it is a group of caves under an impressive rock, lapped by a rough sea.

The only way to visit this wonder of nature is by boat. They set off from View of Zurrik, a charming fishing village nearby, for a breathtaking walk under the rocks. So you see different cavities that produce different shades of blue, from dark to phosphorescent.

On the other hand, if you visit this cave, be sure to visit Valletta, the capital of the country, declared a World Heritage Site for its huge monumental complex. We cannot tell you about all the works he owns here. But we recommend that you visit the Cathedral of San Juan with a classic exterior and baroque interior; The Renaissance Palace of the Craftsmen and the headquarters of the current Presidential Palace of the Republic, as well as museums such as the National Archaeological Museum or the Museum of Fine Arts.

            Toyama Bay

Now we are accompanying you to Japan to introduce you to Toyama Bay, located in the Hokuriku area of the country’s largest island of Honshu, where Tokyo and Osaka are located. In this case, bioluminescence is produced not by plankton, but by the so-called firefly squid.

In Asian countries, this is a very common species that has blue phosphorus in the skin.
