Description

Added by Caleb Adcock

This is a place where both history and nature overlap beautifully

This is an awesome place to check out if spending some time near San Juan. This castle is located on the far side of Old San Juan, offering awesome views of the ocean and surrounding areas.

It costs $7 USD (for adults) to enter, and can be paid at the main entrance when you arrive. This also acts as a pass to other local castles operated by the National Parks Service (keep your receipt for proof). Once you are in, you are free to go and explore! There are different tours that can be provided if you’re looking for an in-depth lesson of its history (by outside tourism agencies) but is something that can easily be explored, self-guided, in a few hours.

Once inside, there is access to pretty much every part of the castle. The rooftop has great views of the ocean as well as  parts of Old San Juan. In the middle section there are many small rooms with historic information that provides you with a little background of why the fortress was built the way it was and what that particular room was likely used for. Some of these rooms have interior access stairwells that will take you to the bottom with a lookout tower that allows you great spots to sightsee and/or take a break.

If you don’t want to pay to go inside, the grassy field outside the walls is free and open to the public! Bring a blanket and lunch and hangout for a few hours with awesome views of the water and a nice, constant breeze. It’s a great break from the hustle and bustle of the city while only be a 10 minute walk from the center of Old San Juan. There is also a paved path around the outside of the castle walls, leading you though the grassy fields and down by the water. This is a great area to do some exercise or snap some pictures.

Explore Castillo San Felipe del Morro

This is a great place to stop when exploring San Juan. I remember there being quite a bit of walking so for those less apt/able to walk there are buggies and buses to help with some of that. Definitely a lot of kite flying on the lawn in front as well!

This is a historic site in San Juan. It’s also a great place to fly a kite (because of the trade winds).

Stroll through Old San Juan

*Puerto Rico’s history is very interesting.  Exploring Old San Juan is fun, informative, and full of culture.
*There are unlimited options for food in Old San Juan, I recommend trying Mofongo, which is made from a plantain. Find a rooftop bar to take it all in (and maybe have a mojito or two!).
*Take pictures of the buildings and streets. It’s hard to find colors like this anywhere else in A…

Catch A Sunset at Escambron Beach

I took my first cruise earlier this year and Puerto Rico was one of the stops.  This beautiful beach is only a 33 minute walk from the cruise terminal and you’ll get to see a decent amount of Puerto Rico on the walk.  Check out the murals across the street too!
At the beach
You are able to snorkel and the reef makes it easily swimmable.  The views are great too; to the west you can see the Capi…

Surf Aviones

This is a reef break in San Juan Puerto Rico. This is probably the most consistent wave on the entire island of Puerto Rico!  It’s a very popular summer time spot for surf, as waves become unmanageable when the large NW swells come through. This wave offers both lefts and rights.  I would recommend this spot for the more experienced surfer, since the wave isn’t the most forgiving and there is a…

Cañon San Cristobal

The hike from one end of Cañon San Cristobal to the other is arguably the most epic in Puerto Rico. Descend a thousand feet into a turquoise swimming hole, climb up a waterfall and find yourself in a valley so perfect it doesn’t seem real. Climb up another waterfall, hike about a mile and you’ll come to ‘La Niebla’: the largest waterfall on the island, 300 feet of water cascading down the side …

Hike Through the El Yunque Rain Forest

Hiking the El Yunque Trail is a 5 mile round trip, about 3 to 4 hours in duration, with a moderate to difficult skill level. In parts, the paved path is well-maintained, and in others, you’ll need to navigate very wet, muddy terrain. The trail takes you up up through the Palo Colorado Forest, to the Palma Sierra, and finally the Dwarf Forest. Be sure to take note of your path as certain areas o…

Explore Juan Diego Falls

Juan Diego Falls are a pair of waterfalls that can be accessed by an incredibly short and ignored trail when passing through El Yunque. When driving up the mountain (heading southwest on 191) the trail entrance can be found behind a road barrier on the right hand side of the road at approximately KM 9.8. This is at a corner between Yokahú Tower and Big Tree Trail’s parking areas. There are ma…

Puerto Rico Attractions: what to see, where to relax

Sunny island resort, offering a huge selection of entertainment, will not disappoint even the most fastidious traveler. Luxurious beaches, developed tourist infrastructure, cheerful nightlife attract guests from different parts of our planet. An incredible number of historical monuments and stunning landscapes leave no one indifferent.

Geographical position

Exotic Puerto Rico, whose sights fully reflect its diversity, is located in the heart of the Caribbean. The state with an area of 13.7 thousand km 2 consists of one huge island and a large number of tiny islands. In the north they are washed by the Atlantic Ocean, and in the south by the Caribbean Sea.

Interesting facts about the paradise

Puerto Rico originally belonged to the Taino Indians. Before the arrival of Christopher Columbus on the island in 149In the year 3 there was an advanced civilization about which modern scientists know too little. After the start of Spanish colonization, the natives died out within a few decades. The Netherlands, France, Great Britain fought for a tidbit in the Caribbean. Now the country, whose name in Spanish sounds like “rich port”, is under the control of the United States, but is not their administrative unit. The island has legislative and executive branches of government, as well as its own constitution.

Approximately four million people live here, and every year about two million tourists rush here to relax. More than 70% of the population are Creoles – descendants of immigrants from Spain. What language is spoken in Puerto Rico? Locals speak Spanish and know English very well, which is subject to compulsory study at school. True, only no more than a hundred thousand inhabitants consider him to be their family.

Miraculous masterpieces

The nature of Puerto Rico is amazing! Picturesque coastlines, fantastic-looking canyons, emerald lagoons, mysterious caves and majestic mountains delight vacationers. And dense tropical forests are the pride of an exotic country. The natural features of the island, where the coastal green merges into a single whole with the blue of the sky, are as colorful as its national composition.

Amazing cave world

In the northwest of the country, in The Parque de las Cavernas del Rio Camuy natural park, there is an extensive network of caves. Rio Kamui is a mysterious underground world that formed 45 million years ago. Of the 800 halls, no more than 200 have been explored so far, but a small part of them is available for tourists to visit. The miraculous miracle, which has not yet revealed all its secrets to mankind, impresses with its beauty and size.

The mysterious grottoes, 200 meters high and about 130 meters deep, hardly get sunlight, and a completely different world opens up in the underworld. Experts have discovered rare species of blind fish that live in underground lakes, and bizarre karst formations resemble alien landscapes.

As the tourists who descended underground after the bright tropics admit, they felt the magic of a unique corner with a mystical aura. This is a real immersion in another dimension.

Bioluminescent bays

Puerto Rico’s natural attractions amaze not only tourists, but also scientists. Three bays (Mosquito, La Parguera and Laguna Grande) made the country famous all over the world. Bioluminescent reservoirs, in which the concentration of microorganisms is high, surprised the Spaniards who came to the island. The missionaries, who for the first time in their lives saw how the water glows at night, considered that these were the machinations of the devil.

Dinoflagellates are unicellular algae that have a special enzyme that “turns on” in the water at night. The colorful illumination fascinates tourists who unwittingly contribute to the destruction of microorganisms that are very sensitive to chemicals, including sunscreens and deodorants.

Turtle Island

The tiny uninhabited island of Culebrita, famous for its peaceful atmosphere, immerses you in natural comfort. But not only the snow-white beach delights vacationers with exotic beauty. The tropical paradise was chosen by sea turtles coming ashore to soak up the rays of the gentle sun and lay eggs.

Nicknamed “Island of the Turtles”, Culebrita invites you to admire underwater landscapes and watch other inhabitants – exotic birds, whose singing is relaxing.

The capital of the state

Colorful Puerto Rico, whose sights allow you not only to have fun, but also to spend time with benefit, is adored by lovers of relaxed rest and connoisseurs of architectural masterpieces. Numerous monuments, combining many different cultures from various continents, convey the energy of the colonial period.

The capital of a freely associated state, named after St. John the Baptist, is of great interest to tourists – San Juan. It is the largest cultural, historical and political center of Puerto Rico. This open-air museum is famous throughout the world for its architectural works. The old part of the city, where multi-colored colonial-style houses are erected, and narrow streets paved with cobblestones are more reminiscent of Spain, delights tourists.

Ancient fortress

Fans of historical monuments should definitely go to the old town of San Juan, where the Castillo de San Felipe del Morro towers. The defensive fortress appeared at a time when the Spaniards captured the island and wanted to protect themselves from the invaders of other countries who were trying to take it away. The powerful building, named after the king of Spain, has undergone numerous renovations for a long time. Protected by UNESCO, it is perfectly preserved and attracts with amazing seascapes.

Beach holidays

The luxurious beaches of Puerto Rico, which can be called its main attractions, amaze with their beauty: slender palm trees grow directly from the sand, which looks very unusual. Here the water is pure, and the bottom is flat, with a slight slope, and you can safely let the kids go swimming.

Tourists love the beaches on the island of Vieques, and the most popular is the well-equipped Sun Bay, while Secret Beach is ideal for those who seek solitude. Flamenco on the island of Culebra is a favorite destination for families with young children, as the water does not rise much at high tide. I must say that excellent service awaits guests everywhere, and there are always restaurants, cafes and shops near the beaches.

But it is not recommended to go out to the open sea, because strong currents and dangerous predators await brave swimmers.

Arecibo Astronomical Observatory

What else to see in Puerto Rico? When it comes to the modern attractions of the island, one cannot fail to mention the Arecibo astronomical observatory, located 15 kilometers from the town of the same name. The spherical radio telescope used to study the solar system is considered the largest in the world: its antenna diameter is 305 meters. Resembling a huge bowl, which is dug into the top of the mountain, it consists of 39thousands of aluminum panels that reflect radio waves.

With its help, scientists learned a lot about the upper atmosphere and space, and some discoveries even won the Nobel Prize.
