Gorgeous. Moving. Must-see.

Aug 2022

Whether you’re religious or not, this is a must-see attraction. The architecture, the details in the stained glass windows, the thoughtful touches dating back almost 500 years are simply incredible.

Our 2022 Trip To Puerto Rico

Jul 2022 • Couples

We traveled to Puerto Rico in late July 2022 for a six day stay. We stayed one block from Bautista Cathedral built in the early 1500. Spectacular church. We did a tour of Old San Juan, San Juan, the beach communities as well the nearby rain forest. Using a rental car we then traveled northeast to the Wyndham resort in Rio Mar. We enjoyed the beach resort and did several trips to enjoy the Puerto Rico north eastern coast. Our final day did a trip to Yokahu Tower. We saw beautiful scenery, a great waterfall and wonderful swimming area created in 1936 by the money provided by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s new deal. Our whole trip was great, but we only saw the north and northeast portion of Puerto Rico, so we need to return to see the rest of this great island!

Pleasant and Solemn

Jun 2022

We were greeted by a polite young man who provided a brief orientation and spent a pleasant span of thirty minutes in the cathedral. The altar is beautiful and a reminder of the glory and richness of Puerto Rico. At the left end of the transept is the tomb of Ponce de Leon. Fans, discreetly swiveling, keep the place cool. It’s undergoing necessary renovation, for which contributions are accepted, and one feels happy to give generously because of the welcoming nature of the place and its staff.

Beautiful Church with the remains of Ponce de Leon

Apr 2022

This is a small cathedral that houses the remains of Ponce de Leon. The artwork is beautiful. The cathedral is welcoming. There are other religious figures. It is the oldest cathedral in San Juan. Worth a visit.

Amazing church to visit

Mar 2022

Amazing church to visit. Wanted to light a candle for peace but wasn’t sure how to. We went inside not knowing it was THE cathedral. No wonder it was so beautifully adorned with frescos, statues and plaster relief. Nice person at the door offered some holy water for me since the stoup/basin was empty. Glad we wandered into it.

Oldest church on U.S. soil.

Mar 2022

Old San Juan’s venerated cathedral is Puerto Rico’s grandest religious building, and one of its most important, and San Juan Bautista is the seat of the Archdiocese of Puerto Rico. it’s a can’t-miss historic landmark in the heart of the old city

The history of the church dates to 1521 and the earliest beginnings of the Spanish colonization of the island. The building you see today wasn’t the original church, which was demolished by a hurricane. The current structure dates to 1540.

Fact: It’s also the second oldest church in the Western Hemisphere, and the oldest church on U.S. soil.

Location: The church is located at Calle del Cristo, just across from the beautiful El Convento Hotel.

No English information available for tourists

Jan 2022

Find a guidebook or hire a knowledgable local tour guide because there is zero information (at least in English) for visitors to the cathedral. Also, look for the Ponce de Leon tomb against the north wall. The cathedral is free, which is nice.

Nov 2021 • Solo

This is a simple but beautiful church. The exterior is very simple and the interior is the same, but amazing art is hanging on almost every wall. I wedding party was rehearsing while I was there so I did my best to stay out of the way. I did find the tomb of Juan Ponce de Leon which was kind of cool. Very well maintained.

The oldest cathedral

oct. 2016 • Family vacation

You will reach this cathedral if you walk up the street from the main gate of the old city. It is the oldest cathedral in the new world. The previous building was wooden, but it was destroyed by a hurricane, the same building was built and renovated from its current state in 1540.

The oldest building in the city 2016 • For two

If you enter the old city through the old gates of San Juan, you will pass through the pretty streets and exit to the Cathedral of San Juan, which is the residence of the archbishop of the city. It houses the tomb of the founder of the city, Juan Ponce de Leon, as well as the relics of the first Puerto Rican canonized, Carlos Manuel Rodriguez Santiago. The status of the cathedral dictates the luxury of decoration. At 19In 84, the cathedral was visited by Pope John Paul II, his decorations and clothes that he wore during the visit are now stored in the cathedral. I recommend visiting.

Unexpectedly looking around the cathedral, we got to the feast of Misericordia. We saw a kind of procession. I am not an expert in matters of religion, but the procession was very impressive. In my opinion, several different orders or different monasteries took part in it. The temple itself was very beautifully decorated.
