Culebra puerto rico ferry: Ceiba Culebra – Puerto Rico Ferry anchored by Hornblower

Puerto Rico Ferries – Hop on the ferry and explore Puerto Rico Islands.

Most visitors don’t realize that Puerto Rico is an archipelago with offshore islands and cays.   If you’re into fewer crowds and wish to experience the more natural side of Puerto Rico, the ferries in Puerto Rico make it possible without breaking your wallet.

Head over to the Ceiba port, you can take a day trip to the gorgeous offshore islands of Culebra and Vieques. Just be sure to plan ahead and get to the terminal early in order to avoid delays in your travels.  If you drive to the south region of the island you can do a day trip to Caja de Muertos off the town of Ponce by a private ferry.  On the southwest coast, you can spend a day at Cayo Aurora (also known as Gilligan’s Island).  See below for more information.

Ceiba Ferry – Travel to Vieques & Culebra

About a 1.5-hour drive from San Juan, you can hop on the ferry in Ceiba to the sleepy islands of Vieques & Culebra.  The most convenient way to enjoy the offshore islands of Puerto Rico is to stay at a resort/hotel on the east coast.   From the port in Ceiba, you can visit two Puerto Rican islands known for capturing the Caribbean of the past.

Tips for Ferry travel from Ceiba to Vieques & Culebra

  • Be sure to get to the ferry terminal at least 1.5 hours before your desired time of departure, 2 hours on holiday weekends.
  • Buy a round trip ticket.
  • If you want to travel to Vieques or Culebra on a weekend or around a holiday, be prepared for large crowds and long wait times.  No guarantee you’ll get a ferry ticket.  We highly recommend you fly from San Juan Airport, Isla Grande Airport, or Ceiba Airport (cheapest flight) and take the ferry back to make traveling easier.
  • You’re not allowed to take a car rental on the ferry, if you have one, you must park it at the ferry parking lot.

La Parguera Nature Reserve – Water Taxis, Charters & Tours

There are no ferries going to the little island/cays of La Parguera Nature Reserve.  You may book a tour with friendly knowledgeable tour operator companies offering trips to Mata La Gata, Caracoles, tours of the mangroves, and bio bay, we recommend that you book ahead. Tour operators offer transportation to Lajas from popular tourist areas and the additional knowledge they have about the reserve elevates the experience.

When you get to La Parguera, as soon as you park, you will most likely see tour guides offering water taxis to the offshore cays.  If there aren’t, there are signs or you can ask someone at a restaurant for info.  Round trip is about $10 round trip per person, a great inexpensive day trip, one of our favorites.

Culebra, Ceiba Airport and Ferry Dock, San Juan Airports, and Ferry Transportation

WE
STRONGLY RECOMMEND OUR
VISITORS TO FLY TO CULEBRA INSTEAD OF TAKING THE
PASSENGER FERR
Y. Flying is the most reliable–and
least time-consuming–way to get to Culebra. The
ferry system historically has been unreliable,
especially for non-residents.

BY
PASSENGER FERRY:

You
may check the schedule and buy passenger tickets
online at https://www.puertoricoferry.com
or in person at the Ceiba ticket office. However,
if you are unable to buy the tickets way ahead of
time, we would strongly suggest you take the
airplane.

Ferries
to/from Culebra depart from the port town of Ceiba, Puerto
Rico. The port of Ceiba is 1.25 hours from San Juan
International Airport (SJU) under light traffic
conditions, and 2.5 hours on rush times. A taxi (or
publico van)  is readily available as you exit the
airport in San Juan; $90-100 for the trip for your family
group. UBER, when available, would be somewhat cheaper.

Passenger ferries are
fast (45 minutes). The cargo ferries take 1.5 – 2.0
hours, and also carry passengers.  The present
one-way subsidized fare is $2.25 + book fees, per
person, and is expected to increase soon to about
$11.00.

We strongly recommend that you purchase the ferry
tickets online in advance to avoid lines at the ticket
office and assure
that there is space for you.

If coming by
ferry, you should
take the PASSENGER ferry, which lands at the dock in
town (Dewey, Culebra), while most of the CARGO ferries
would land at a dock at San Ildefonso, away from town
(Dewey).

If you are flying in from
abroad and want to take the passenger boat to
Culebra to check-in at Tamarindo Estates that
same day, you would need to land into San Juan not later
than 12:00
Noon. This would normally
allow sufficient time to get your luggage and then the
taxi to the Ceiba ferry dock. The last boat you may take
and still be able to check in at Tamarindo Estates
departs Ceiba at 3:00 PM.

We recommend that you
do not rent a car on the main island of PR to take on
the cargo ferry to Culebra. Bookings for cars on the
cargo ferry are very limited, insurance may not cover
if you take car on the ferry, and you would not be
able to get roadside assistance on Culebra from the
rental company. It is highly recommended that you
first get to Culebra without a car and rent a car from
the local Culebra companies.

BY PLANE:

Most of the airplanes to
Culebra depart from San Juan Isla Grande Airport (SIG),
some depart from San Juan International Airport (SJU),
and they take only about 35 minutes from San Juan. The
flight from Ceiba to Culebra takes about 12 minutes.
Flights between San Juan and Culebra are about $90 pp
each way and between Ceiba and Culebra $50 pp each way.

13 lesser known Caribbean islands worth visiting

Article

top limit-leaders’>

Autumn is in full swing and winter is on the deck, and it’s time for warm-weather lovers to plan their sunny, sand-filled winter vacation. The remote islands of Fiji or the pristine beaches of Hawaii may seem tempting, but the Caribbean – just an easy, direct flight from more than a dozen US airports – is actually home to their own remote, tourist-free destinations. If you’re planning a winter getaway, here are 13 lesser-known Caribbean islands to consider.

1. SAN ANDRES, COLOMBIA

EUGENIO SELEDON VIA FLICKR // CC BY-ND 2.0

Just 10 square miles, San Andres Island has few tourists compared to popular neighbors like Nicaragua. The center of the island is unimpressive – filled with simple buildings and not-so-attractive duty-free shops – but what San Andrés lacks in colorful buildings, it makes up for in stunning beaches. It is a stone’s throw from Johnny Cay Protected Regional Natural Park, the hidden cave of Cueva de Morgan and the San Luis Coast, famous for its white sandy beaches and extraordinary snorkelling.

How to get there: Avianca and Copa Airlines fly directly to San Andrés from Colombian cities such as Barranquilla, Bogotá and Cartagena.

2. NEVIS, WEST INDIS

Nevis

, located in the northern part of the West Indies, is truly a hidden gem. With luxury hotels like the Four Seasons and epic dive sites like Booby High Shoals, home to an impressive population of sea turtles and rays, Nevis is the perfect destination for adventurers and vacationers alike. In addition to its outdoor offerings, Nevis also has an interesting history, including its claim to fame as the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton.

How to get there: Fly to San Juan, Puerto Rico and make a fast flight to Nevis. Alternatively, you can take a ferry from St. Kitts.

3. VIQUE, PUERTO RICO

DAVID SCHROEDER VIA FLICKR // CC BY-NC-ND 2.0

Its remote beaches, including Flamenco Beach, which was ranked the third best beach by TripAdvisor in 2014, have some of the clearest waters in the area. Activities such as scuba diving, snorkelling and boat trips are also popular among the few tourists who decide to visit this tranquil Caribbean island.

How to get there: San Juan offers direct flights to Culebra, while Fajardo – an hour from San Juan – provides a ferry service to the island.

In addition to the many nature walks, visitors can stop at the island’s museums and galleries, including the Joe Bean Glass Art Studio and the Harry L. Johnson Museum (a 160-year-old sea captain’s cottage) or the island’s capital (with perhaps the coolest title), The Bottom.
