Fort San Felipe del Morro or El Castillo San Felipe del
Morro in Spanish is a sixteenth-century citadel which lies
on the northwestern-most point of the islet of San Juan,
Puerto Rico. Named in honor of King Philip II of Spain, the
fort, also referred to as “El Morro” or “promontory”, was
designed to guard the entrance to San Juan bay, and defend
the city of San Juan from seaborne enemies.

In 1983, the fort was declared a World Heritage Site by
the United Nations and is part of San Juan National Historic
Site. Over two million visitors a year explore the windswept
ramparts and passageways making the fort one of Puerto
Rico’s main visitor attractions.

Facing “El Morro”, on the opposite side of the bay, a
smaller fort known as “El Cauelo” complemented the fort’s
defense of the entrance to the bay.

Architecture and Design

The construction of the Fort San Felipe del Morro begun
in 1539 when King Charles V of Spain authorized its
construction, including the surrounding walls. The purpose
was to defend the port of San Juan. Construction started the
same year with a tiny proto-fortress that was “completed” in
1589. This small section comprises perhaps 10% of the
structure people see today.

In 1587, engineers Juan de Tejada and Juan Bautista
Antonelli designed the actual appearance of the castle
following well established Spanish military fortification
design principles. Similar Spanish fortifications of the
1600s-1700s can be seen in Cuba, St. Augustine, Florida,
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Veracruz and Acapulco,
Mexico, Portobello and Panama City, Panam, and many other
Latin American locations which were governed as part of the
Spanish Empire during the Age of Exploration.

Many complex additional new structures were added to El
Morro over the next 400 years. The outer walls are six
meters thick. In 1680, Governor Enrique Enrquez de
Sotomayor begun the construction of the walls surrounding
the city of San Juan, which took 48 years. By the late 18th
century, El Morro’s walls had grown to be 18 feet thick.
Today El Morro has six levels that rise from sea level to
145 feet high. All along the walls are seen the dome-covered
sentry boxes known as garitas, which have become a cultural
symbol of Puerto Rico itself. A lighthouse was built atop
the fort in 1843, but in 1908, it was replaced by the US
military with the current lighthouse.

Including the exterior open killing grounds, known as the
glacis and esplanade, dominated by cannon in the 17th and
18th centuries, El Morro can be said to take up over 70
acres.

Castillo-San Felip-Del-Morro, also known as El-Morro, is a fortress built between the 16th and 18th centuries in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Located on the northwestern part of Old San Juan Island, San Felipe del Morro Castle is named after King Philip II of Spain. The fort, also called El Morro, was designed to guard the entrance to San Juan Bay and protect the Spanish colonial port city of San Juan from maritime enemies.
During Spanish rule on the island of El Morro, also known for attacks from foreign powers and for its resilience.

In 1593, Portuguese soldiers sent from Lisbon on the orders of Philip II formed the first garrison of the fortress of San Felipe del Morro in Puerto Rico.

In 1595, the Englishman Sir Francis Drake unsuccessfully attacked San Juan with his fleet at the Battle of San Juan.
In 1598 the English attacked again under the leadership of George Clifford. Clifford succeeded because he attacked San Juan by land rather than trying to enter through San Juan Bay. However, a dysentery epidemic forced him to flee the island after the Battle of San Juan.

In 1625, the Dutch, led by Boudewijn Hendrix, also attacked the island in imitation of George Clifford’s land invasion. The invaders were able to pass in front of the castle’s defenders and into the harbor, out of the reach of the city’s cannons. El Morro managed to hold out against the siege and eventually forced the Dutch to retire, although the attackers were able to sack and burn the city before abandoning the Battle of San Juan.

In 1797, British General Ralph Abercrombie and Admiral Henry Harvey invaded the island of Puerto Rico with a detachment of 7–13,000 men. Captain-General Don Ramon de Castro and his troops repelled the attack. Abercrombie and Harvey were defeated at the Battle of San Juan.

El Morro’s last stand was during the naval bombardment of the US Navy during the Spanish-American War of 1898, which ended the era of naval warfare in the Caribbean, at least in the classical sense. During the Spanish–American War, the castle was attacked by American naval forces at least three times, the largest of which was the bombardment of San Juan on May 12, 1898. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris, under which Spain ceded ownership of the islands of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Guam, and the Philippines to the United States.

Castilla de San Felip del Morro

Fans to look at historical buildings to visit the castle Castile – Felipe del Morro. It is located in the old part of the city of San Juan – the capital of the country. This fortress was built during the capture of the island by the Spaniards: they tried to defend themselves from the troops of other European countries who wanted to take away the conquered Caribbean islands from them. The castle was named after King Philip II of Spain. Throughout its centuries-old history, it has undergone completions and reconstructions, as a result of which it now looks like a completely modern defense structure with six-level walls over 40 meters high. During World War II, the Americans set up a bunker here. And at 19In 83, the fort was recognized as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Now there is a museum, the doors of which are always open for tourists.

Caribbean National Forest
El Unco Reserve, or Caribbean National Forest is the largest tropical forest in which nature is preserved in its original state. Here, tourists can relax in the shade of trees, admire waterfalls and forest lakes, as well as rare plants and animals (for example, bright green Amazonian parrots that are endangered live here). El Unco is located very close to San Juan, and after a noisy metropolitan life, it can be very nice to relax like this and feel like a child of nature.

Beaches
Puerto Rico’s full attractions, like other island countries, are local beaches. Tourists especially love the beaches of the island of Vieques. They boast clean white sand and azure water. The most popular is Sun Bay. Everything here is equipped for the convenience of visitors: there is parking, showers, garbage cans. On the beaches of Red Beach and Blue Beach, surfing and diving are practiced. There is also Secret Beach – there are usually few people here, and you can relax calmly.

Kamuy Caves
Kamuy Caves is the third largest cave system in the world. They were officially opened only in 1958, although they were visited much earlier by local Indians. On the territory of the caves there is a picturesque underground river Kamuy – rare fish are found in it, preserved only here, underground.
