org).- Un periódico ayuda a los católicos puertorriqueños y a muchos hispanos de los Estados Unidos a ver el mundo con los ojos del Evangelio.
Se trata de «El Visitante», semanario católico, publicado por la Conferencia Episcopal de Puerto Rico desde 1975 con una tirada de 54.000 ejemplares.
En el marco de la X Reunión de la Red Informática de la Iglesia en América Latina, Zenit ha entrevistado a José Ortiz Valladares, su director.
–¿Cuál es, según usted, la diferencia entre un periodista católico y uno que no lo es?
–José Ortiz Valladares: La diferencia entre un católico que es periodista con otro periodista es que el católico tiene una luz especial, ve las cosas desde un prisma mucho más amplio, con un sentido marcado de lo que es la dignidad humana, y de lo que es el bien común.
–¿Cuál es la misión que debe desempeñar un periódico católico?
–José Ortiz Valladares: Un periódico católico tiene una triple misión:
En primer lugar, reflejar los acontecimientos de la Iglesia; después defender de forma temática la institución de la familia y la educación; y en tercer lugar, dar una cobertura informativa a todas las noticias de tipo económico social y político desde la fe, sobre todo aquellas que ponen en tela de juicio la ley natural y desde luego aquellas que van contra la fe.
–¿Qué influencia tiene «El Visitante» en Puerto Rico?
–José Ortiz Valladares: En los siete años que llevo dirigiendo el periódico, hemos influido de forma decisiva en asuntos públicos como, por ejemplo, el nombramiento de la procuradora de la mujer: un artículo nuestro impidió que hubiera unanimidad en torno a la propuesta, porque algunas de sus posiciones eran a favor del aborto.
Y en la actualidad, nuestros artículos investigativos sobre las consecuencias de haberse implantado un borrador del libro de familia en el Código Civil ha dado la otra visión a la casi unanimidad de la prensa secular que era favorable a uniones que no son la familia tradicional.
–Usted tiene a muchos lectores hispanos en Estados Unidos y conoce esta comunidad. Con frecuencia son presentados como el futuro de la Iglesia en ese país. Al mismo tiempo, se constata que con frecuencia pasan a formar parte de otras denominaciones cristianas, alguna de ellas sectas. ¿Son los hispanos una falsa esperanza?
–José Ortiz Valladares: Yo creo que hay de todo.
Hay personas que ya vienen con una convicción cristiana muy fuerte desde sus respectivos países y lo primero que hacen es ir a buscar la parroquia más cerca. Sobre todo las primeras generaciones. Las segundas y terceras generaciones puede que acudan a otras denominaciones cristianas. La Iglesia católica a nivel de Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos ha hecho un esfuerzo enorme de pastoral de los hispanos.
–¿De manera que sí son una esperanza para la Iglesia en los Estados Unidos y para la Iglesia universal?
–José Ortiz Valladares: Sin duda alguna se da un «revival», un deseo de recuperar manifestaciones externas de la fe y la cultura, como las procesiones, o como las fiestas tradicionales de las diferentes comunidades en los Estados Unidos: los peruanos, los hondureños, los puertorriqueños, los mexicanos… Es una esperanza. Por otra parte, estas manifestaciones de fe y cultura son vistas en general con buenos ojos por el resto de las personas y comunidades de los Estados de los Estados Unidos.
De hecho, en general, en la Iglesia todos nos sentimos acogidos.

Facts
Born into a wealthy family, first studied law, then medicine. He worked as a model, starred in television commercials. Earned decent money advertising whiskey in Mallorca, decided to go into advertising. He founded his own modeling agency, then a travel agency and a restaurant. Subsequently, he took acting lessons from Christina Rota and began working in theater and acting in films at the end of 1980s.
Has been involved in numerous television series and films. His role in the TV series The Journalists earned him the Fotogramas de Plata award in the 1998 Best Television Actor category. He was twice nominated for the Goya Award in the Best Supporting Actor category in 1999 and 2002. Since 2001 he has been working closely with director Enrique Urbizu.
Coronado has a son, Nicholas, with the model Paola Dominguin (daughter of the Italian actress Lucia Bose), who continues his father’s career, and a daughter with the singer Monica Molina.
