The St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort, Puerto Rico
4.6/5Outstanding101 Reviews
13.74km from El Yunque Rainforest
This is a difficult hotel to review. I give it 4 (really closer to 4.5) and not 5 stars for a few reasons. They are really close to five though. Rooms are good. I had an oceanfront suite (which is still about a hundred yards from shoreline) that I booked on points. Amazing bathroom. Housekeeping of the highest caliber I have ever seen. It does not feel the most luxurious, but I cannot complain. This is Puerto Rico, not St Tropez. And they take advantage of that fact by having outstanding rain forest grounds. Iguanas roaming and coqui tree frogs making their sweet song at night. If you like nature, this is a great place. Their number one problem is the food. The breakfast buffet, which some other reviewers vaunted, is rather average at best. The scrambled eggs are lukewarm and the selection of fruit underwhelming. The pastries are ok, but there are no bagels…yet they still have lox. Odd. To be fair, I did not try their a la carte items. An omelette station at the buffet would be a smart add. Also, I can’t stand that Marriott only offers a complimentary continental breakfast to platinum elite members. Do you really need the $9 up charge just because I want eggs? Silly. Paros is completely overpriced. $62 very basic filet mignon and that looked to be the best value to me. They had a sea bass on the menu for $92! The sides are $16….EACH! This is not Le Cirque. They need to bring prices more into reality. The one stand out value is the tuna sashimi app. When in doubt in Puerto Rico, order tuna. It is almost always very fresh. Their presentation of it here is also noteworthy. A nice aioli sauce and dehydrated olives. Amazing. The sushi and bar menu downtstairs are a bit more correctly priced. The spicy chicken nuggets are quite good for $20. The sushi (only available weekends) needs work. The rolls do not use real snow crab, so avoid California rolls. The spicy tuna roll was adequate, but I think they could improve the rice quality. Did not seem like sushi rice. Let me add a word about my criticism of the food. I live in PR and I understand that it is difficult (and costly!) at times to get high end ingredients here. They have to work around this if they are going to meet the standards and value that the modern cosmopolitan traveler expects. Their bartenders are great. Rum old fashioned. Pina colada. Martinis. They nail them all. Gym is more than adequate. I did not get an spa treatments, so no review there. I meant to check out the boathouse and go fishing, but I just never got around to it. Seems like a cool value add. The pool and beach areas are great. It may take you a minute to get noticed, but once they see you, they are very attentive. Bottom line, this place has great staff and people. That’s huge. It has a lot going for it and I think with just a bit of tweaking with the food program, they could earn that extra half star.

Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico
4/5Very Good101 Reviews
14.3km from El Yunque Rainforest
We live in San Juan and needed a night away from the house after the hurricane. Having been to Las Picuas/Rio Grande area before we knew the area was beautiful but our first time at the hotel will not be our last. The kids amenities are great, plenty of games and cute kids playground. The kids club had good activities for the under 10 crowd. The food we ate at the pool was fine, but breakfast was the shining star. The rooms are clean, the shampoos and lotions are a larger size and good quality. We really liked the hotel and it felt like a great mini vacation for our family. I’d also go back as couples or a girls trip.

The number of arthropods in Puerto Rico has decreased by 60 times since the 1970s, researchers from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York found. The study was published in PNAS journal . Together with other works on this topic, the extinction of insects causes serious concern among scientists.
The number of arthropods in the El Yunque National Forest has decreased 10-60 times since 1976. The number of animals for which insects serve as food has also decreased. Lizard populations have declined by 30%, frogs by 50%, some bird species by 90%. Scientists attribute the extinction of insects in Puerto Rico to the fact that the temperature in the rainforests increased by 2.2 ° C – insects are unable to regulate body temperature and such changes could be fatal for them.
Other works show that in Germany over the past few decades there has been a 76% decrease in the number of flying insects , and worldwide over the past 35 years there have been 45% fewer invertebrates.
“The study should make us pay attention – this phenomenon can be much more global and affect many more ecosystems,” says David Wagner, an invertebrate conservationist at the University of Connecticut. “This is one of the most disturbing articles I have read.”
