What can we expect from this park?
The only tropical rainforest in the U. S. National Forest System, El Yunque National Forest is home to an incredible amount of biodiversity—even after Hurricane Maria. There are 240 tree species alone, making it a must-see on any nature-lover’s itinerary. One need not worry about big wildlife, but lizards and frogs—like the island’s coqui mascot—abound. Hike the rather easygoing trails to see all the vegetation, small animal life, and waterfalls.
What should we be sure to see?
Be sure to see La Coca Waterfall as well as Yokahú Tower, offering enjoy panoramic views of the forest.
How easy is it to navigate—especially for visitors with limited mobility?
There is quite a bit of signage to keep hikers on the right path, but those with mobility issues should proceed with caution.
Anything else we should be aware of before planning a visit?
According to the forest service only about 40 percent of the park is currently open while recovery from Maria continues. Also know, entrance to the forest, which can be navigated with trail maps available online, is free, but many independent operators offer paid tours that include pick-up and dropoff at your hotel.

Travel to Puerto Rico. Part 2. ElYunke, Ponce, Boqueron, Aresibo
It’s time to write to you about the second part of my trip to Puerto Rico, in which I want to tell you about a trip around the whole island.
Of course, Puerto Rico is not only the beautiful and expensive capital of San Juan, but the rest of the island. And if you have / will have the opportunity to leave the capital for 2-3 days, you will see and discover much more than the capital can provide, and the island will remain in your memory for a long time! nine0163
So, our goal is to go around the entire island along the perimeter, having time to relax and enjoy the sights along the way. We rented a car and drove out of San Juan. After 5 days we returned to the international airport of the capital.
Journey started from the eastern part of Puerto Rico। Undoubtedly, in this part, I highly recommend visiting El Yunque Rainforest (El Yungue http://www. elyunque.com), which officially bears the name of the Caribbean National Forest and is the only rainforest in the US National Forest System. Its area is 11.3 thousand hectares, it is a primary tropical forest, it oozes moisture, evaporates it into the sky and, ahead of the winds that could blow the clouds away, generously waters itself with eternal rains. 200 million liters of precipitation per year is the El Yunque norm. nine0163 And if in the first half of the day there is a fairly stable clear sky and good weather, by 12 o’clock in the afternoon a fine and warm rain will fall on you, which will change into bright sunshine in 30-40 minutes.
Against the background of a huge variety of plants and animals, the forest of El Yunque is home to two symbols of the island at once: the Puerto Rican parrot and the coca frog, which is very recognizable for its nocturnal vociferous singing.
At the entrance to the territory of El Yunque, you will be given a map that you can navigate to so as not to miss the most beautiful places (these places are also immediately noticeable by the accumulation of tourists and cars). nine0163 Here are the brightest of them:
La Coca Falls
Observation deck in the tower with souvenirs (in which we managed to hide from the rain at the same time)
And of course, the brightest place is the La Mina waterfall and almost 30 min. the road leading to it is La Mina Trail (this is only one way, do not forget about the time you spend on the way back).
There is a lot of lush vegetation along the way, a noisy mountain river and of course the waterfall itself.
We spent a little more than half a day in the rainforest, and so that the journey would not be so tiring, we decided to stay one more night in the Atlantic and spent the night near Liquillo. nine0163 Luquillo
The town is very small, famous for its good beaches and fairly good hotels. On the day when we managed to visit the beach in Liquillo, the sea was restless, there were no more people who wanted to swim, except for surfers.
Near the central beach, the central square of the city is very clean, small and tidy. Yes, and in principle, especially we did not see anything else.
The hotel where we stayed was Hotel Yunque Mar – normal, affordable, given that we spent only 1 night there, it’s really nothing. It was nice to fall asleep to the sound of the Atlantic! nine0163
The next morning we left towards Fajardo . We did not enter the city itself, we drove past it. The town is quite famous; travelers often stop there. According to reviews – a clean and beautiful coastline, with Fajardo a ferry sails to the nearest islands of Culebra and Vieques. Not far from Fajardo, on a small stretched peninsula, there is a beautiful lighthouse, a park and a bioluminescent lagoon. If you decide to stay in Fajardo, you will find a lot of interesting things in this part of the island. However, we did not stop and drove on. nine0004
Our goal for the day is to get to the opposite side of the island, to the Caribbean Sea, the town of Boqueron.
To achieve this goal, we drove (stopping, taking pictures, going to local mini-restaurants) along the entire Caribbean coast, the official name of which is Porta Caribe – South Route .
And here are the places where we stopped along the way:
In general, highway No. 53 from Fajardo to Yabucoa is very picturesque and worth it to drive and stop in the most beautiful places. On the way there is a beautiful Punta Tuna lighthouse, next to which there are beautiful beaches for surfers. nine0163
We stopped at a local restaurant, somehow explained ourselves in Spanish with the order of a dish (with English from the local population, especially outside the capital, it is difficult), as a result, we ordered a very tasty mofongo with shrimp soup. Despite the minor difficulties, it was very tasty (well, the views, the Caribbean Sea, the sun) gave the dishes their own unique taste and aroma.
Dalle we drove past Ponce. FYI, San Juan to Ponce is a straight and beautiful road, so you can skip the detour we did and go straight to Ponce. nine0163 We did not stop by the city of Ponce – we considered that there was no need to waste time on it. And you decide for yourself :)) Briefly about Ponce – the second largest city of Puerto Rico, known as a major port since the end of the 17th century, lies on the southern coast of the country, between the chains of the Central Cordillera and the Caribbean coast. The city, often referred to as La Perla del Sul (“Pearl of the South”), was founded by Spanish settlers in 1692. Today, the central part of the city is declared a “national treasure” – it consists entirely of squares, churches, beautifully decorated colonial houses and magnificent fountains of the colonial period. It also towers, and perhaps one of the oldest fire stations in the world. nine0163 And we drove past Ponce and further through Guanica, San Germán and Buqueron, we reached the hotel, where we spent the remaining 3 days in a small village El Combate
On the way we stopped several times in cities near shopping centers. Near one of the shopping centers we saw chirping birds in the branches.
We liked the CombateBeachResort hotel, and taking into account that we were almost alone in the hotel (out of season, and this region of the island is more designed for locals), both the attitude and the service were at a fairly decent level – and the buffet in the morning , and pleasant communication with the hotel manager Tommie Ramirez, as well as the chic cocktails that Tommie made for us. nine0163
This cocktail was very tasty and the name is very romantic Your heart in paradise. Undoubtedly, the PinaColada was insanely delicious.
I was pleasantly surprised by the area around the hotel, and especially the beach, where we were alone (well, almost alone, we don’t take into account the seagulls and sometimes passing sea patrol).
In general, the CaboRojo region is very beautiful and interesting: you can visit the CaboRojo National Wildlife Refuge, see the salt production in the region, I highly recommend visiting the lighthouse, which offers wonderful views of the Caribbean coast. nine0163
I was impressed by the size of the iguana peacefully basking in the sun.
While in the CaboRojo region, I also recommend a trip in the late afternoon to the small village of La Parguera , which is famous for its bioluminescent lagoon (there are 7 such lagoons worldwide, 3 of them are located in Puerto Rico). Scientists explain the phenomenon of the luminous lagoon by the behavior of microorganisms that begin to glow in the water around any moving object. Unfortunately, we were not able to photograph the lagoon itself during the glow, because. this glow is very weak and hard to capture by the camera. nine0163 There are many water houses in the village – they are very popular.
But on such boats, you can ride and see the luminous lagoon.
It is worth visiting the town Boqueron , which is famous not only for beautiful beaches, but also for very beautiful sunsets.
And on the way back to the capital (we had almost all daylight left) turn a little off the main road and visit the Arecibo Observatory. The observatory has the largest radio telescope on Earth, and has been featured in blockbusters such as “X-files”, “Contact”, and James Bond’s “Golden Eye”. The plate, 305 meters in diameter, was built in the early 60s from 38,000 perforated aluminum panels.
