Designer hotels: Fontevraud in France, W Hotel in Beijing, El Blok in Puerto Rico | Admagazine

While selecting fourteen new hotels for our review, we did not want to reduce them to a common denominator. But he suddenly showed up: an interesting hotel design is always a dialogue. With history, with nature, with art, with the urban environment. Or even with ancient philosophy.

1. Fontevraud, France

The Angevin abbey of Fontevraud still remembers Richard the Lionheart, his mother Eleanor of Aquitaine and other characters from Goldman’s play The Lion in Winter. Napoleon turned the once richest monastery in France into a prison.

The prison of Fontevraud remained until the 1970s (here, by the way, Jean Genet sat), after which it was restored and turned into a cultural center. And now a hotel has been opened here, which instantly became a sensation.

Canadian-French duo Jouin Manku, who were commissioned to furnish the hotel, managed to make 54 rooms and all the necessary public spaces without touching a single stone of the medieval walls. And at the same time gave the charm of a quiet abode to modern comfort.

2. Lanserhof Tegernsee, Germany

Düsseldorf-based Ingenhoven Architects seems to have designed this spa hotel with four keywords in mind – light, sustainability ”, “calm” and “space” (the area of the smallest of the 70 rooms is 50 meters).

The architectural solution turned out to be extremely refined, but rational on the verge of purism. More precisely, it would have happened if the hotel had been built somewhere on the outskirts of Munich. But it was built in the Bavarian Alps: dryish eco-luxury fits into the eloquent landscape in the most peaceful way.

3. El Blok, Puerto Rico

Designing a boutique hotel (22 rooms) on the island of Vieques, Puerto Rican bureau Fuster + Architects faced a clear choice – to exploit the local color or close it eyes. We chose the latter: against the backdrop of fishermen’s houses, a concrete building with intricately twisting facades and perforated shutter panels looks radical. However, the architects claim that their solution is organic in every sense – it de hints at the shapes and textures of the Caribbean coral reefs.

4. Ace Hotel, Los Angeles

Mind-blowing halls – late Spanish Gothic, Art Deco creatively reworked – suggest the standard story: there was a luxury hotel, then it was launched, and now reopened. In fact, everything is not so: an elegant 13-story building was built at 1927 as the headquarters of the United Artists company, then the building was for a long time – for a minute – a church, and only three years ago it was decided to turn it into a hotel with 182 rooms.

Designers have played enough with retro styles: not only the public areas, but also the rooms are designed in the spirit of the 30s-50s of the last century. At the same time, a pompous historical cinema was restored – the once main “showcase” of the film company has now become a concert hall.

5. W Hotel, Beijing

A restaurant with 36 giant aquariums on its wall; a DJ remote hidden in a huge disco ball; desperate colors; a parade of lamps, one more inventive than the other — with oriental redundancy gives away everything, even what the architects apparently conceived as an example of minimalism.

Surprising as it may seem, all this wealth is actually built on the images of ancient Chinese natural philosophy. And any decor element (say, a circle inscribed in a square) can turn out to be a symbol of the strict harmony of the universe.

6. Sunrise Kempinski, Beijing

Here again, there are solid symbols, and noticeable from afar: the front of the 97-meter building (595 rooms) depicts the sun rising over Yanqi Lake, in profile – a clam shell (symbol happiness), and the huge entrance arch resembles, according to Chinese architects, a fish’s mouth (a symbol of prosperity – do not think badly). As often happens in the modern Celestial Empire, all these old wisdoms are a beautiful wrapper for advanced technologies. For example, on such a significant facade, numerous solar panels are laid between glass panels.

7. Rooms Hotel, Tbilisi

Georgian boutique hotel chain Rooms continues to explore the abandoned legacy of Soviet modernism: their first hotel returned the old camp site to a pleasant life, and the second, Tbilisi, was located in the building of the former printing house. Through the efforts of the design studio Rooms (the hotel chain borrowed its name from it), the depressing concrete wreck was transformed, acquiring a loft-bohemian chic.

The interiors are cheerful, but with a nice touch of old-fashioned (vintage items are scattered throughout the rooms and halls in abundance) and man-made – the rooms are covered with handmade paper wallpaper, some of them hand-decorated with silk-screen ornaments.

8. Point Yamu by COMO, Phuket

The project of this hotel complex (79 rooms and 27 villas) was made by the Belgian Jean-Michel Gati, but first of all, I would like to name the author Paola Navone, who in addition to the interiors, she came up with literally everything – up to cups and cutlery.

“Yamu is a headland with sea on three sides,” explains Navone. “The lighting and the views are amazing, I had to start from them.” In addition, the designer was completely fascinated by Thai handicraft traditions, so that both furniture and decor elements honestly refer to them.

Navone even suggested that the local craftsmen who did the finishing work should sing while they worked, so that they would tune in to the right emotional note. They probably sang something drawn out: a relaxed meditative mood is really thickly poured into the air.

8. The Exhibitionist, London

The hotel that previously occupied this building in South Kensington was modestly called the Gallery – fortunately there are really enough galleries and museums in the neighborhood. The current indiscreet name is actually in the same vein, because it means a pun on the word exhibition (exhibition). Under the roof of the hotel, in addition to 37 rooms, there are now as many as eight small galleries, where visiting artists can exhibit whatever they please.

Modern art confidently sets the tone for the entire hotel, pushing aside all prejudices regarding hotel design. So the impression the local interiors leave is appropriate – disturbing, sarcastic, rather crazy, but unforgettable.

10. Château Gütsch, Lucerne

The hotel building, slightly in the spirit of Ludwig II, stylized as an old castle, appeared over Lake Lucerne back in 1888.

The most famous guest of those times was Queen Victoria, who admired Gyuch so much that, with her light hand, the British aristocracy visited here for several decades.

After that, the Grand Hotel fell into disrepair for a long time. The current owners, having decided to bring back the glorious past, methodically put the building in order, retaining the former stucco decor and spaciousness (27 rooms).

And the famous decorator Martin Lawrence-Bullard was called in, who spruced up the interiors with bright colors and amusing, albeit authentic details (for example, family portraits from the collection of the first owner of the hotel).

11. Double Tree by Hilton Moscow Marina, Moscow

Designing this hotel complex, the ADM workshop followed the brand’s strict standards (simple form, straight corridors), so that the main building stretched along Leningradsky Prospekt. But immediately behind it begins the coastal zone of the Khimki reservoir – one of the main advantages of this hotel, along with the interiors, which were created by Frontarchitecture together with the British partner Martin Hulbert Design.

12. JW Marriott, Venice

The 266-room hotel (including a few villas) occupies an entire island, the so-called Isola delle Rose, in the Venetian Lagoon. Purebred design by Matteo Thun, olive groves, rose gardens, four restaurants, a culinary academy, a variety of spa delights – guests would clearly have something to do, even if the hotel was located in the middle of the Arabian Desert. However, it is obvious to everyone that the main lures of the hotel are total solitude fifteen minutes from the city crowded with tourists and a postcard panorama of the sea “facade” of Venice.

13. Four Seasons, Moscow

Unbearably iconic views of the Kremlin and Red Square are back on the market: after years of heated discussions and slow construction, the revived Moskva Hotel has opened under the Four Seasons brand (180 rooms). Behind the politely recreated asymmetrical Shchusev façade are new interiors designed by British luxury hotel design specialists Richmond International.
