How the container appeared (container revolution)

Sometimes people are born who are called to change the world for the better. It is difficult to name the reasons, draw a pattern or predict where and when it will happen next time. Yes, and nothing. They come when the world needs them.

In 1914, a boy was born somewhere in North Carolina in a large family of American farmers McLean. He was given the name Malcolm and, as usual, predicted a farming career and a quiet existence in the outback of the United States for his rapidly growing son. Did not work out. But it is unlikely that any of the McLeans regretted it at least once.

He did not stand out among his peers in any way, except that he was very dreamy, for which he was often scolded by adults: the future farmer should not have his head in the clouds – his legs should feel the earth that feeds him

Malcolm, after working for several years at a gas station, decided in 1934 to buy a used truck for $120 with his brother Jim and sister Clara. Malcolm turned the truck into a working tool. In his car, he carried cargo to the port, receiving modest money for this. But things quickly went uphill – soon Malcolm was able to afford a second truck. A couple of months later, a third. By the early 1950s, the McLean business had 1,770 trucks and 32 terminals. Later, at 1958 McLean Trucking becomes America’s first trucking company.

In 1937, while waiting in line to unload at the port of Hoboken, New Jersey, McLean had the idea of ​​loading trucks and trailers onto a ship. Later, he realized that he could use when loading “Only the trailer itself, no wheels … And not one trailer, not two, not five, but hundreds – on one vessel!”.

McLean was able to start implementing his idea only at the beginning of the 1950s. At the time, United States laws prevented trucking companies from owning ships and operating ocean shipping.

And in 1955, McLean sold his stake in McLean Trucking for $ 25 million and founded a new corporation – McLean Industries Inc. McLean Industries buys Pan-Atlantic Steamship Corporation and Gulf Florida Terminal Company from Waterman Steamship Corporation for $7 million. Later that year, McLean Industries bought out the entire share capital of the Waterman Steamship Corporation. McLean receives a bank loan of $ 500 million and on January 19On the 56th, he acquires 2 T2 tankers from the Second World War, with the aim of converting them to transport containers.

McLean invites engineer, American Keith Tantlinger (Keith Walton Tantlinger, born 03/22/1919 Orange, California, USA) and sets him the task of designing a shipping container 35 feet long, in accordance with the length of the truck trailer. Tantlinger not only designed the container itself, but also brought to life the innovative idea of ​​a container frame with reinforced corner posts, which made it possible to stack containers in several tiers. In addition to the container, Tantlinger developed a system of Twistlock corner fittings and locks, which allowed new technologies to be applied in the handling and securing of containers on vehicles. In total, Tantlinger owns 79patented inventions related to transport and transportation of goods. In 2009, Tantlinger was awarded the Gibbs Brothers Medal by the National Academy of Sciences for his contributions to world trade, an invention that changed the world’s merchant marine.

It took several months to modify the ships, develop containers and car trailers to transport them. On April 26, 1956, the tanker SS Ideal X, converted to carry containers, left the port of Newark Elizabeth, New Jersey and headed for Houston, Texas. On board were 58 brand new 35-foot containers, as well as a specially invited delegation of 100 VIPs, high-ranking officials and businessmen. Upon arrival of the vessel at the port of destination, a thorough check of the containers was carried out – the cargo was safe and sound.

Freddy Fields, Chairman of the International Longshoremen’s Union, who was watching the Ideal X leave Newark Harbor, in response to a question – what does he think of the new container tanker, gritted through his teeth: “I would love to sink the son of a bitch!”

Overloading 1 ton cost $ 5.86. Thanks to the use of containers, the cost of transshipment was only $ 0.16 per ton, the costs were reduced by 36 times! Container handling required 6 times less time and 4 times less labor than traditional cargo handling methods. McLean knew that ships bring money only when they are at sea, in navigation. Then the ships spent only about 50% of the time sailing, the rest was occupied by loading / unloading. Containerization allowed ships to be at sea 80% of the time.

A year later, in April 1957, the first dedicated container ship, Gateway City, began regular service between New York, Florida and Texas. In the summer of 1958, McLean Industries, under the name Pan-Atlantic Steamship Corporation, established regular service between the United States and San Juan, Puerto Rico with the Fairland container ship.

In April 1960, McLean gave the company a new name – Sea-Land Service Inc., in accordance with the combined nature of its transportation. Sea-Land Service continued to develop containerization by opening new routes and acquiring new ships. By the end of 19In the 1960s, Sea-Land Service owned 27,000 containers and 36 container ships, with offices in more than 30 port cities.

Twistlock Malcolm McLean created a comprehensive, standardized container shipping system – not only the container itself and its handling technology, but also road and sea transport designed specifically for the transport of containers. The main elements of the system have been patented. Convinced that standardization was the key to the overall growth of the shipping industry, McLean made his patents available to other carriers, with a royalty-free loan to the International Organization for Standardization.

The benefits of McLean’s container shipping system were clear. Competitive companies quickly developed, building huge ships, unprecedented portal cranes and more complex containers. Sea-Land Service needed investment to stay competitive.

McLean turned to tobacco giant Reynolds Tobacco Company, whose cigarettes were shipped across America by McLean Trucking trucks. In January 1969, Reynolds accepted an offer to buy Sea-Land Service Inc. McLean became Reynolds’ largest shareholder with a $160 million capital investment and took a seat on the board of directors. Soon the R.J. Reynolds Industries, Inc., which acquired Sea-Land Service on May 1969 for $ 530 million. Having received investments, Sea-Land Service immediately ordered 5 of the largest and fastest ships in the world, container ships of the SL-7 class.

By the end of 1974 R.J.R. invested more than $ 1 billion in Sea-Land. Huge terminals were built in New Jersey and Hong Kong, new ships were purchased. To reduce Sea-Land’s biggest cost, fuel costs, the American Independent Oil Co., known as Aminoil, was acquired in 1970. 1974 was the best year for R.J. Reynolds Industries Inc. Sea-Land increased its profit 10 times, to $145 million. Aminoil’s profit soared to $86. 3 million. In June 1984, R.J. Reynolds Industries Inc. spun off Sea-Land Corporation as an independent company, an open joint stock company whose shares were traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Sea-Land has achieved the highest profitability, earning the largest profit in its 28-year history. On September 191986 Sea-Land Corporation merged with CSA Acquisition Corp., a subsidiary of railroad giant CSX Corporation. Sea-Land’s common stock was redeemable at $28 per share, One of Horizon Lines’ container ships in cash. In 1999, the international part of the Sea-Land business was sold to Danish giant Maersk for $800 million. The combined company was named Maersk Sealand, now Maersk Line. The US segment of the Sea-Land business currently operates under the Horizon Lines brand, with a market share of about 36% of the maritime container shipping market between continental America and Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Guam. Horizon Lines is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina.

McLean’s containerization has propelled the development of the global shipping industry to a quantum leap. Containers have forever changed the economic geography of the world by making imported goods available. The container paved the way to Asia, which has become the world’s factory for the production of a wide variety of goods. Thanks to containers, industries on all continents have gained many new consumers, and consumers – a previously unimaginable variety of goods available from all over the world. Transport historians value McLean’s contribution to the global shipping industry as equal to the transition from wooden sailboats to steel steamers.

Malcom McLean died on May 25, 2001 at the age of 87.
