San Juan is located on the north shore of Puerto Rico and its historic center, known as Old San Juan, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its preserved city walls, 16th- and 17th-century colonial architecture, and cobblestone streets made from the ballast of Spanish ships arriving more than 500 years ago (an even earlier arrival by ship was Christopher Columbus in 1493). Today these streets are lined with antique shops, jewelry stores, art galleries, souvenir stands, and array of restaurants and sidewalk cafes offering mouth-watering Puerto Rican cuisine, as well as flavors from around the world.

Puerto Rico is a small island in the Caribbean that has a very interesting status – the island is dependent on the US, but is not essentially an American territory, but they share the same citizenship, currency, and all flights departing from the US to Puerto Rico are considered local, without customs and other special passport control. If you have American internal documents, rights, for example, then you can fly on them. Or you need an American visa in a Russian passport. But the islanders did not always have such relations with America; initially, the island, as you might guess from the name, was owned by the Spaniards. nine0003

At the end of the 15th century, Christopher Columbus landed on the island inhabited by local Indians Taino . By tradition, the territory was named after the saint – John the Baptist, in the Spanish version – San Juan. The main city of the new possession was called Puerto Rico (i.e. “Rich port”). Everything was logical and good, exactly until the moment when the island began to be mapped. Cartographers confused the name of the city and the island, and in the end we have what we have – the state of Puerto Rico with the capital San Juan. nine0003

So, the island was colonized by the Spaniards, and almost all of the natives died. This happened for the most part due to the fact that the Europeans and their slaves, brought from Africa to work on the ground, brought to the island a huge number of diseases unfamiliar to the local population, as a result, there were practically no Taino Indians left. Due to the fact that Puerto Rico was under the influence of Spain for several centuries, the main language in the country is Spanish, but probably 90% of the people with whom we had to communicate speak English very well, but not all, although English is also is the official language. nine0003

The Spaniards used the island as a trading port and fort (in which they kept a lot of gold, among other things). Since those times, two very famous fortresses have remained in Puerto Rico, here they are, but these are such grandiose structures that I will talk about them in a separate post.
