These photos are just a glimpse of what Puerto Rico has to offer. From food to scenery to sunsets and hidden beaches, Puerto Rico is an extraordinary place to visit!

After spending a full year back in the United States, after a long 3.5 years of non-stop travel, I was really itching to get out of dodge for a while. It was a tough transition back to America, and since New York is getting colder in the month of December, I couldn’t; t help but crave the warm sun and hot sand of some tropical beaches.

On a whim, I bought a ticket to San Juan, Puerto Rico (who knew they were so cheap?), and until then, I had exactly what I was looking for. With my trusty camera in hand, I set out to photograph the very best Puerto Rico has to offer. These are my twenty best photos from Puerto Rico.

1) Ocean Views at Culebra

It took two hours by boat to get to the small island of Culebra and on arrival we rented a golf cart for the day. This steward us around the island, barely making his way through the hills or through the deep trenches we weren&; t must be passable.

On our mission of driving aimlessly and hopping from beach to beach, we took a wrong turn and ended up overlooking the vast blue sea and lush green forests.

2) North Shoreline Old San Juan

Old San Juan is home to two sixteenth-century strongholds that were built to prevent naval attackers from taking over the harbor and island. They are currently connected by city walls that were built 200 years after their original design. This is a shot from the northern coastline of the old city, from Castillo San Cristobal in the east to El Morro on the western promontory.

3) WS Bay Beach, Vieques

After being confused while looking for the most easily accessible promenade on the island (typically), I ended up at the far end of the beach. At least ten minutes of walking through thick seaweed until he reaches his destination: the pure white sand of Sun Bay Beach Beach.

4) Ponce windows

I spent a day on a small mangrove island in southern Puerto Rico with Norber of Globotrex. When we finished swimming and drinking rum for the day, we took off to explore the Art Nouveau town of Ponce. The architecture here is distinctly different, and the colors, like everywhere else in Puerto Rico, were beautiful to photograph.

5) palm tree on the island of Culebra

It just looks like heaven, doesn’t it and ;?

6) Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery, Old San Juan

My favorite view of all cities. This classy spot is located just outside the walls of El Morro, in relation to the Atlantic Ocean, and is the ultimate getaway for some of Puerto Rico’s some famous residents & ;.

7) Pastellilos (Puerto Rican Empanadas)

This fried little piece of heaven is essentially a Puerto Rican empanada. While the chicken fill extremely pastelillo was delicious, pastelon (left) was a real highlight that day. Typically cooked like a Caribbean casserole, Pastelón is a sweet and savory combination of mashed plants, beef, cheese and sauce.

Fry all this in a small pocket, and this is lunch and .

8) sunset at Vieques

I almost didn’t catch this sunset beauty, but I’m glad I did, in the wrong time. This bay is always great filled with boats and the cloud structure that passed that evening was just gorgeous.

9) Flamenco Beach, Culebra

Once a highly developed area, Culebra Island has been left largely untouched by the general public. In 1975 the island was opened to the general public and in 2014 Flamenco Beach was voted the third best beach in the world.

10) La Perla: slums of old San Juan

Strange contradiction, La Perla is the slums of old San Juan. While the rest of the city seems to be bustling with relative illnesses, the historic community of La Perla remains in the opposite contrast.

The DEA has estimated that the drug trade within this tiny village is twenty million dollars.

11) Ocean view on the island of Vieques

Just one of those tropical photos I love!

12) Familia, Ponce

Cruising through the streets of Ponce, as the sun went down we stumbled across this little ruona. Sitting on top of a small plateau, a cross in the background marks the spot where, from the 17th to the 19th century, a guard watched merchants and enemy ships. Just behind the ruins, to the right of the cross, is the El Castillo Serralles Museum, home of one of Puerto Rico’s.

13) Cloudy in Fajardo

Unusual cloud formations from Borge ferry near Fajardo. Do you see a tiny rainbow?

14) Castillo San Felipe del Morro

Perhaps one of my favorite shots of the old city, I took this from atop Castillo San Felipe del Morro. In view of the city walls, Santa Maria Magdalena cladaire, the slums of L.A. Perla and Castillo San Cristobal.

15) Beach boat, Vieques

A very typical Puerto Rican insurance scene. It seems almost everywhere, when the locals no longer need the boat, they just left it there.

16) Fresh Mahi Mahi, Arroz Con Frijoles Y Café Helado

One of the best meals I had in Puerto Rico was at a small cafe in downtown Ponce. Eating enough mofongos for one trip, I ordered some tasty Puerto Rican coffee, traditional rice and beans, and a slightly joyous Mahi Mahi that dissolves in your rose.

17) Puerto Rican Iguana

These guys were everywhere, and they were certainly not small! Most were at least two feet long, and I generally found them sunbathing on the hot, dry cement of castles and city walls in old San Juan.

18) secret beach (I can tell you where! No doubt

We were given directions to a hidden beach on the east coast of Puerto Rico. Not knowing what to expect, we wore swimsuits and flip dips and left mosquito repellant behind. Against all expectations, we found ourselves walking through the dense Puerto Rican jungle, followed by swamps and mammoth mosquitoes that left their marks for several days.

The view was worth it though!

19) Plaza Colón, Old San Juan

Balcony View of Old San Juan & – Best Budget Accommodation, Posada San Francisco. There are very few accommodation options in this area, very low prices and since Puerto Rico is not the cheapest place to travel, I was delighted to find such a central and well maintained accommodation. Located in the heart of the Old Town, just 20 minutes from the airport, this has to be the best place to stay in the area.

Both they and ; assured look!

20) sunset on the beach, Vieques

After long days in the sun, my travel partner and I made up along the beach towards the boardwalk for Caribbean cuisine and Piña Coladas. As the horizon began to beam with light, we stopped to dip our toes into the water. The air was light and the ocean captivating, and this very moment marked the culmination of a very beautiful day in Puerto Rico.

This structure dates back to the XNUMXth century and was built to protect the city from raids from the sea. , attacks that were very frequent at that time, with the aim of conquering land and plundering the population.

This fort has become one of the most representative elements of the ancient city and has survived to this day. It was one of the most popular monuments even during the Spanish colonies. and now the same fortress can be found on a rocky island and is easy to see because it sticks out. Built in 1539. and it was a simple tower that was redesigned a few decades later, in 1587 by Juan de Tejada and Juan Bautista Antonelli, to turn it into an incredible Spanish military fortification created at that time and respected by all. .

A little history of Morro de San Juan in Puerto Rico

As I just told you, the history of Morro de San Juan in Puerto Rico begins in 1539 since the founding of Spain, but it will take almost half a century for it to become fully functional and able to serve as a fort.

It got its name from King Philip II of Spain, who placed it on it, and was designed with slight differences from other fortifications. which were later discovered in other countries such as the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic, Cuba and even in Acapulco, where there were also similar fortresses in order to be able to defend themselves from enemies who came to their lands by sea.

More than 400 years since history began, this fortified fort has experienced many adventures within its walls. , but this forced a change to its original structure. El Morro is now a World Heritage Site and covers at least 70 hectares of San Juan’s northwest summit.

The foreign attacks that El Morro suffered, which are also part of history, are better known as the legend of the fortress, although there are records confirming its history and everything that the fortress went through. The city has depended on its development by both the British and the Dutch for many years of its history. and that’s why it’s so heavy. Now there is a large museum inside, the function of which is to describe in detail the battles that took place on the banks of San Juan, so that all tourists who want to know them can recognize them.

The last time the fortress experienced serious adventure and action was during the 1898 naval bombardment. in the war between Spain and America. After some events with the United States, Puerto Rico has repaired its walls and the history of El Morro can begin to enjoy moments of peace and tranquility.

Nowadays El Morro is a place very visited by tourists, so if you want to go there, don’t hesitate, because you can learn new things about its history and battles, as well as get great photos thanks to the wonderful views that you you can find.

The fortress today

If you want to visit the fortress, you should know that it costs three dollars and five dollars if you buy the ticket, which also includes the San Cristobal Fort. If you have children under 15 accompanying you, they can visit the fort turned into a museum free of charge.

It’s really worth paying the money to get in as there are a lot of interesting features, you can also walk inside and outside the fortress so you need to make sure you have enough drink to hydrate yourself during the tour. There is a gift shop that also sells water bottles, but as you know patrons can get thirsty, they cost a bit more.

Once inside the fortress, you will be shown a short video about the history of the fortress. so you place yourself and you will see the importance of building and how important it was in all the battles. The video is shown in English and lasts an hour and a half, but later it will be shown in Spanish. If you have any doubts, you can also inquire about the staff of the current museum. If you don’t want to watch the video, you can take the map and explore everything on it to show you this magnificent fortification.

How is the fortification

First you can find the main square of El Morro. was the area where the troops gathered for parades and daily checks. The well in the center of the square is also a good place, it can take a year to fill it with rainwater. The surrounding rooms face to the sides and were used as dwellings, storage tanks, gunpowder sump, chambers or firing positions… no doubt there was a lot of life in these places of fortifications. There was also a chapel.

On the upper level, west of the main square, there is a ramp leading to the upper floor. There you will find vents that bring fresh air into the rooms below. From this place of the fortress you can take incredible photos. There is also a lighthouse on the upper level, rebuilt in 1908.

From the top level you will have a beautiful view of the San Juan Cemetery, to the east and west across the bay you will see the remains of the fortress of San Juan de la Cruz.

then if you want to reach the lowest levels, you will have to return to the main square. and access to these lower levels is by the stairs or ramp just before the entrance to El Morro, or by the triangular stairs east of the main square.
