Edgar Plans. Freedom to dream and live

Dates: 08 SEPTEMBER — 10 OCTOBER, 2021

Address: MMOMA, GOGOLEV BOULEVARD, 10/2

Curator Pablo G. Villasan

The Moscow Museum of Modern Art, together with the Padre Gallery and with the support of the Embassy of Spain, presents the first solo exhibition in Russia by the Spanish artist Edgar Plans. He gained fame thanks to his fictional characters who are inscribed in the context of a modern city and fight against the problems of the real world. nine0117

The project at MMOMA includes over 100 selected works that continue Plans’ famous Animal Heroes project in various formats. The characters are based on his “picture books” and cartoons, in which the artist exposes crimes against humanity and our planet. In addition, the viewer will be able to observe the process of creating a work: from an insignificant abstract note in a notebook to a completed work. The original pages from the artist’s notebooks, like the rest, presented at the exhibition in an enlarged format, reflect the inner world and creative fantasies of Edgar, their variability and rebelliousness, and, finally, their final embodiment in the finished work. nine0117

The author often experiments with space and format: from huge diptychs and an extensive collection of drawings and sketches for a forthcoming book, to portraits of his animal characters going out into space. There is nothing accidental in Plans’ painting: the scratched wax in the image of the background, and the topoi used by the artist, and his ironic style, as well as the characters and animals in his canvases – everything is full of meaning. The main source of inspiration for the author are comics, street and “urban” art, as well as the aesthetics of children’s drawing, which attracts him with complete freedom of expression, gestures, strokes and an unrestricted play of color. nine0117

About the artist:

Edgar Plans is a Spanish post-war and contemporary artist, born in 1977 in Madrid. His artistic education began in the studio of the artist José María Ramos, where he mastered the basic techniques of drawing and painting (1995-1997). He continued his education at the University of Oviedo, received a degree in art history. His work has been featured in several exhibitions at key galleries and museums, including Almine Rech (Paris) and Almine Rech (Shanghai). The artist lives and works in Gijón (Spain). nine0117
