El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico is a salsa musical group formed after the dissolution of Rafael Cortijo’s Combo in 1962.

History
This group was called “El Gran Combo” by the impresario Rafael Alvarez Guedes, who contributed to the album Menéame los mangos . The group includes Rafael Itier, Eddie Perez, Hector Santos, Quito Vélez, Martin Quiñones, Miguel Cruz and Roberto Roena, as well as Dominican artist Josito Mateo.
Their first public performance was at a rock and roll club in Bayamo, Puerto Rico. Their performances on radio and television confirm the discovery of this musical education.
Singer Chiki Rivera leaves the group and is replaced by Junior Montañez, known for his vocal performance on the radio show, where he sang the Bobby Capo song. Shortly thereafter, he called himself Andy Montañez. Roberto Roena joined the band and stayed with them for the next seven years until he created his own band, Apollo Sound.

The band’s first album, Acángana , was released in 1963, just two days before the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy. After this event, the distribution of the album in Puerto Rico was suspended, but the album is distributed in Mexico, Panama and Venezuela, where the album is widely distributed. The album then circulated in New York, then Puerto Rico, where it became a gold record.
The band achieved great success playing Latin dance halls across New York City, such as the Palladium Ballroom in midtown Manhattan and El Caborrojeño, a year after the release of their debut album.

This success paved the way for similar performances in other countries such as the Dominican Republic, Panama, Colombia and Venezuela. Throughout Latin America, the album tops the charts.
This popularity allows the band to win an exclusive contract with Puerto Rican TV on El Show de las 12 . The ensuing popularity of the TV show increased the band’s demand for all sorts of dance and music events and boosted the sales of their album even higher.
Two years later, the group’s survival was tested with the departure and replacement of several of its members. Roberto Roena and Elias Lopez are replaced by Serrano Edwin Cortes. Hector Santos and Victor Pérez also left and were replaced by José Duchene and Mike Torres, who was later replaced by Tommy Sanchez. Edwin Cortes later left and was replaced by Gerardo Cruz, who remained with the group for the next ten years. Despite these changes, the group thrived and won the Agueybaná de Oro Puerto Rico award as the best group in 1969 year.
The next decade began with even more changes when Milton Correa replaced Miguel Marrero. Mike Ramos arrived to replace Mike Torres and was subsequently replaced by Alfredo (Tati) Maldonado.
The group is world famous.
Problems with record labels forced the band to release their albums as independent artists, forcing one member to mortgage his house to finance production costs. This led to the creation of their own label: EGC and their first production, album El Momo d’Oro .
In 1971, the group received a trombone performed by Epifanio (Fanny Ceballo).
Fanny Ceballo remained with the group until her death from cancer in 1991.
The first album to showcase this new sound was De punta en punta, which included such classic hits as Don Goyo , Achilipú and Le dicen papá .
The album won the award for Best Album at the Festival’s Gold Record for Miami.

Shortly thereafter, Pellin Rodriguez left the band and began his solo career, replaced by Marcos Montañez, brother of Andy Montañez, who had been with the group for only six months, and he was replaced by sonero virtuoso Charlie Aponte.
In 1975, Miguel Cruz, one of the founding members of the group, left the group for health reasons and was replaced by Fernando Pérez.
The following year the group was honored in New Orleans and won the Venezuelan President’s Award for Best International Music Orchestra at 1977 year.
But this year also retired Martin Quiñones and left Andy Montañez, who left to sing with the Venezuelan band La Dimensión Latina.
Replacing Andy was not easy, Jerry Rivas showed enough talent for this.
The release of the golden record El Gran Combo in Las Vegas in 1978 allayed the fears of those who were worried about the line-up changes. In the late 1970s, the orchestra received other awards, including those from the Puerto Rican Cultural Institute.

In the 1980s another gold disc album was released: Aquí no se sienta nadie, followed by a successful tour of Peru. The following year they entered the Mexican market and won the silver Caldendar award.
For their 20 – year anniversary, the group received several local and international awards such as El Congo d’Oro in Colombia, an award from the Senate of Puerto Rico, and another award from the City of Dorado and the Paoli Prize. Two years later they visited Alaska, bringing the warm sound of salsa to that snowy climate and producing a Grammy-nominated album Breaking the Ice – El Gran Combo in Alaska . This year the orchestra again became the laureate of the Paoli Prize. Their success at that time was truly international: Great Britain, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Argentina, Venezuela, Japan, the USA and other countries of the world.
In 1982 they triumphantly celebrated their 25 – anniversary at Madison Square Garden in New York with a historic concert.
More awards soon followed, such as El Guayaquil Luminoso from Ecuador, Premio Aplausos for the best group, the Chamber of Deputies of Puerto Rico, and another from the cities of Bayamón and Juncos.

Five years later, on their 30 – anniversary, similar special events were planned to celebrate the occasion. The celebrations were held in Madrid, where the audience and the press were delighted. Back in Puerto Rico, the Senate commissioned them with a resolution declaring the band “Ambassadors of Our Music”. The final stop of this celebration was a concert at San Juan’s Hiram Bithorn Stadium in front of 30,000 fans, joined by Andy Montañez, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Jerry Rivera, Alex D’Castro, Johnny Ventura and La Sonora Ponsegna.
