Fun horse racing, sad facilities

The clubhouse and stands suffered a direct hit from Maria, but the attitude and excitement makes up for the viewing facilities. The track and grounds are in great shape and the races are competitive and exciting. The betting windows are open, there are concessions for food and drink. I really enjoyed our beautiful Friday afternoon here. The track is a relatively short drive from Isla Verde or Condado, a little further from Old San Juan. If you enjoy horse races, this is for you.

Sad place to be…

This race track is empty and sad looking. They have tried to declare bankruptcy three times and even changed the name because it is empty and people are not interested.
Not a good time for families, I would go to the beach instead.

Take a time to enjoy, eat, share with friends or family, relax and why not probably win some extra money if you are lucky. We went to the restaurant area. The food is good, service is excellent.The place is clean, well located and organize.

Great outing for the whole family!

A great way to spend an hour or an afternoon. We had visited Old San Juan and put in our hours at the beach and were looking for something cheap and relaxing to do. This was the perfect activity for our family of 4, kids aged 18 and 20. The race track is in a beautiful setting with the mountains in the background. Admission and parking is free.
On the main floor you can view the horses as they walk them around for you to see before the race. You can place your bets at this level and then walk directly out to the track and view the race up close. There is also a second viewing area on the second floor that is enclosed in glass windows, it has a drinks, food, pool tables and another betting window. There are many tables and has a great view of the entire course and tv showing the race at many of the tables. Our family had a great time and I would recommend this venue. Even if you chose not to bet you can just watch the races and still have a great time. There were people of all ages from young children to the more elderly. Please note – it is closed on Monday and Tuesdays.

Off the beaten path

For a change of pace we spent a day at the horse races.
The track itself was gorgeous. The clubhouse was also very nice. The food and service were great. We just happened to pick a poor time to be there as it was during San Juan biggest festival of the year so we were one of only two tables in the clubhouse. It would have been much more fun with some energy in the room. If you go, make sure to arrange for a taxi to come back to pick you up since you won’t find them outside waiting at the end of the races.

During the final week of August 2013, my wife and I had the opportunity to travel to Hipodromo Camarero in Puerto Rico. I have always wanted to visit Camarero and was very excited to visit the track! I follow several horses who’ve raced there, such as Guerrilla Warfare who was in the money 16 of 23 starts.
My co-workers and I also enjoy the race caller’s excitement during Camarero races.
The weather was amazing all week and horse racing is year round in Puerto Rico. The infield was a beautiful pond with teaming wildlife and plant life. El Yunque national park, which is a tropical rainforest and mountain range, can be seen as a backdrop, and of course warm weather!
Horses were very approachable at the track. In fact, prior to one race, two different grooms brought horses over to a young boy of 5 to pet the horses while waiting in the indoor saddling paddock. There was a dividing wall, but that would not normally happen at other tracks. I was thinking how much that may have impacted that boys life, maybe he will be a fan or industry member for life.
The receiving barn is directly right of the grandstand and an open standing area that was open during the week days to public. The glass main grandstand was not available, at least I didn’t try to find out. You could watch horses coming to the track from the stables, appear from behind the tote board and settle in at the receiving barn, then move from the receiving barn to the indoor saddling paddock underneath the grandstand.
It is very compact, but so easy to scope out the competition.
At the track I met an individual who gave me an inside look at racing in Puerto Rico. I will not disclose his name, but appreciated his hospitality, transparent honesty, and the education he gave me. We will call him “A.” A is a small time Puerto Rican trainer who has been around to sales and lower level claiming races/tracks most of his life, but who’s home is in Puerto Rico for most of his life. He has played the claiming and sales game at larger tracks inside the continental United States.
A discussed the track life in Puerto Rico, explained changes that happened when the former U.S.-based owners sold Camarero to a group of Puerto Rican buisnessmen. There was discussion on the breeding, import and export of horses, and he talked about the role of Latin America in racing, Latin American trade, and the major race meets like the Clasico del Caribe (Carribean Classic Showcase). A had a lot of passion and desire to see the sport improve and grow in Puerto Rico, with larger field sizes, more fans, and more players at the tracks.

After arriving at the track, the second race of the day was set to go off.
Thus my wife and I ventured over to the saddling paddock to look at horses for race 3. The horse with the white blinkers is the horse I really liked, #3 Burst of Glory. My wife and I discussed who else looked like a winner and we settled on #1 Carifeo as well. Burst of Glory looked great, but as you scroll down and watch the replay, was three wide most of the race and moved a little too early and tired at the wire. The jockey also stood up before the wire, which I yelled about at the time, but the replay revealed that Burst of Glory wasn’t going to hold off the pressure.

Great ATV trip
Our ATV Guide “Panda” was great with us. We wanted to do a two hour tour but all we had left was one for an hour – still a great trip through the base to the woodworking. We had a great time and the ATV’s were in excellent condition – passed fields, forests, streams and other routes.

You will be submerged!
Last week I did a horse ride on the beach with a friend. While the tour itself was interesting and our guides were great, the trip was more than just “on the beach” as we were all the way into the water (up to my waist, the horse’s neck) to move to another part of the beach.
Never before (or on the site) or during a trip have we been told that we would be submerged at any moment and I had no idea how deep we would go until I was literally in it up to my waist. Needless to say, my final concentration was on navigating the horse (which was unsteady on its feet due to the waves) in the neck – deep water, and so I didn’t pay attention to the small back of the building that was caught in my belt loop. Naturally, my bag was also loaded and my phone was completely ruined. If at any moment we were told back of the water we would come, I might just have taken a small bag from my belt and put it down my t-shirt. Yes, I was expecting to get a bit wet as part of our tour and with me splashed here and there, that wouldn’t be a problem, but he’s on a horse in the water up to my belt is a completely different story. Not only did I lose every photo I took my vacation, it cost me over $800 to replace my phone…apparently an expense I didn’t expect to take in the middle of a vacation. To add a dash of trauma, I emailed Carabali mail, twice, explaining the situation and asking for some sort of compensation, and I didn’t even get a response. Amazing trip on the beach and ATV!
We took our 3 11 year olds on a racetrack ride overlooking the beach which was phenomenal! Our guides, José and Carlito, were fantastic! They were great with kids – which is safety number one but also make sure they had an unforgettable time.
