    Caja de Muertos

Caja de Muertos ( lit.   “Dead Man’s Chest”; [1] [2] [3] uninhabited also in English 3: 90 90 island 10) an island off the south coast of Puerto Rico, in the municipality of Ponce. The island and its surrounding waters are protected by the Caja de Muertos Natural Reserve due to the natural movement of turtles and the ecological value of its dry forests and reefs. Tourists and beach lovers can often be seen on the island, which can be reached by ferry from the La Guancha promenade sector to Ponce Playa. Together with Cardona, Ratones, Morrillito, Isla del Frio, Gatas and Isla de Hueyes Caja de Muertos is one of the seven islands belonging to the municipality of Ponce. [4] [5]

The island is believed to be only about 4000 years old, and the stone carvings left on the island show that people have been visiting it for thousands of years. [6] The Taino natives often came to the island on fishing expeditions, and when they were defeated by the Spanish in 1511 during the Spanish-Taino War of Boriquen, the natives tried to retreat to the Caja de Muertos, but soon after they were either captured or killed. [7] It is known that for most of the 17th century the island was used as a hideout by pirates and rebels. For example, in 1599-1600, it was used by a group of pirate merchants who, having learned about a Portuguese ship filled with gold, silver, precious stones and other treasures, attacked it and appropriated its contents. However, when they tried to return to England, they encountered an attempted mutiny and, after surviving it, took refuge in Caja de Muertos. Traveling to mainland Puerto Rico for provisions, they were killed, with the exception of one who later confessed to the existence of a hidden treasure. The Spanish colonial governor then appropriated the remaining treasure for building projects, among other things. [8]

In 1842 the first known map was drawn using the name of the island as it is known today. [9] In 1880, the Spanish government began building a lighthouse on the island, completing it in 1887. [10] [11] In the 19th century, the island was also a haven for Puerto Rican patriots seeking independence from Spain. Some of the patriots who hid there include Ramon Emeterio Betances and Segundo Ruiz Belvis. [12] During these decades, these were the secret meeting places of Freemasons when they were persecuted on the mainland. [13] [6] In 1928, Cayetano Coll y Tostena wrote a novel entitled El Tesoro del Pirata Almeida (The Treasure of the Pirate of Almeida), inspired by the island of Caja de Muertos, and in 1883 he inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write Treasure Island. [14] [15]

In 1898, at the time of the American invasion, the island had 64 permanent residents, and ten years later there were only 16 residents. [16] These inhabitants had no fresh water on the island, so water was brought in from the mainland when it could not be collected from the precipitation during periods of light rain. [9] The island eventually became uninhabited except for the keepers of the light. In 1945, when the island’s lighthouse was automated, [17] the lighthouse keepers were no longer needed and the island became deserted. Thereafter, the island became a day trip destination for some private boat owners who could go to the island for a day trip or fishing trip.
